To have a PS5 download updates in Rest Mode, enable its internet connection there, then turn on the automatic update options for games and apps and for system software. These are separate settings. For games, choose download-only if you want to decide when an update installs after resuming a suspended game.
Let the PS5 connect to the internet in Rest Mode
- On the PS5, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
Automatic updates while the console is in Rest Mode depend on this setting. Sony’s power-saving settings guide explains the available Rest Mode options.

Choose how game and app updates behave
- Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Auto-Download to download updates automatically.
- Turn on Auto-Install in Rest Mode if you also want the PS5 to install updates while it is in Rest Mode.
If you want to avoid an update closing a suspended game, use Auto-Download without Auto-Install in Rest Mode. The update can download while the console is in Rest Mode, and you can choose whether to install it when you resume the game. Starting a game or app also prompts it to update to the newest available version. See Sony’s automatic downloads and updates guide for these settings and behaviors.
Enable automatic PS5 system software updates
- Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Turn on Download Update Files Automatically.
- Turn on Install Update Files Automatically.
Sony describes these settings as allowing system software updates to download and install while the console is in Rest Mode, so the software is current the next time you use it. This system software page is separate from the game and app update page. For the official details, see Sony’s automatic updates guide.

Check for a game or app update manually
- Highlight the game or app on the PS5 home screen or in your game library.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Select Check for Update and follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available.
Sony’s update-check instructions cover this option for PS5 and PS4.
If an update does not download or install
- Check Stay Connected to the Internet under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- For a game or app, check Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates. For system software, check Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- For a specific game or app, use Options > Check for Update.
- Some updates may require approval, so automatic settings do not guarantee every update will finish without input. Sony does not specify which updates need approval; its support guidance directs users with unresolved problems to PlayStation Repairs.
Updating or reinstalling system software manually with a USB drive is a separate recovery path, not a requirement for automatic updates. See Sony’s PS5 system software instructions for that process.
