How to Improve a Portable Hotspot’s 5G Signal and Speed

Separate weak cellular reception from hotspot Wi-Fi problems, then check plan limits and carrier conditions before considering a compatible antenna.

A slow 5G hotspot can be held back by the cellular signal reaching the hotspot, the Wi-Fi link from the hotspot to your device, carrier congestion, or your plan’s hotspot limits. Check those separately before buying an antenna: start by moving the hotspot, then troubleshoot Wi-Fi, and finally check the plan and coverage.

First, identify which connection is slow

A portable hotspot receives data over a cellular network and shares that connection with nearby devices over Wi-Fi. A weak cellular link affects the internet connection for every device using the hotspot; a weak or interfered-with Wi-Fi link can affect only the connection between the hotspot and a particular phone or computer. Verizon describes its mobile hotspot service as sharing the Verizon network through Wi-Fi (Verizon mobile hotspot FAQ).

The hotspot’s signal bars and displayed network type are useful clues, but bars alone do not explain every slow-speed problem. Netgear’s Nighthawk manual notes that speed depends on signal strength and interfering radio sources. Its instructions are specific to that hotspot family, not universal settings for every model (Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot User Manual).

Try these free checks in order

  1. Move the hotspot to a better reception spot

Check the signal indicator and network type, then test a few nearby locations. Try a window with a clear view of the sky; Netgear recommends this for poor reception on its Nighthawk hotspot. Compare the signal and speed at each spot, since the manual does not promise a particular improvement or prescribe one best orientation.

    • Slim profile
  2. Check whether the hotspot-to-device Wi-Fi link is the problem

If cellular reception appears adequate but a nearby laptop or phone has a weak connection to the hotspot, restart the hotspot and reconnect. On supported models, try the other Wi-Fi band as well. The Nighthawk manual lists 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi profiles for its device; these describe the local Wi-Fi connection, not the cellular 5G network. Available bands and settings depend on the hotspot model.

  3. Use USB-C tethering if your hotspot supports it

Connect a computer to the hotspot by USB-C tethering instead of Wi-Fi if the device supports that feature. The Nighthawk manual describes this option. It bypasses the local Wi-Fi link for that computer, which can help determine whether Wi-Fi is the bottleneck, but it does not increase the capacity of the cellular connection.

  4. Check your plan and carrier coverage

Confirm that your plan includes hotspot data and check its current allowance and speed terms. Verizon says speeds may decrease after the monthly high-speed allowance is used; its examples are specific to individual plans and should not be applied to other plans or carriers (Verizon mobile hotspot FAQ; Verizon data usage FAQ). Network congestion and capacity can also limit speed even when the hotspot’s placement and Wi-Fi connection are reasonable. The FCC discusses network-side technologies such as beamforming, massive MIMO, and carrier aggregation as factors in capacity, coverage, and service quality—not settings a hotspot owner can switch on to overcome every limitation (FCC 2024 Communications Marketplace Report).

When an external antenna is worth considering

An external antenna or a cradle with built-in high-gain antennas may be an option when weak cellular reception is the diagnosed problem and the exact hotspot supports the accessory. Netgear’s Nighthawk manual suggests these options for low network signal, but that does not mean they work with every portable hotspot or guarantee a speed increase.

  • Compatible Network Carriers: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, US wireless, Bell, Rogers, Telus, Telcel, Movistar, Digicel, etc
  • Check the precise hotspot model’s manual for antenna support and the required ports or connectors.
  • Verify that the accessory supports the device’s relevant cellular bands.
  • Consider where the antenna can be placed and how its cable may affect the setup. AT&T’s guidance on obstructions, electrical interference, and cable loss is for a 5G gateway, not proof of compatibility with a portable hotspot (AT&T 5G gateway antenna placement).

Do not buy an accessory solely because it is marketed as a “5G booster.” It needs to address the diagnosed cellular-reception problem and match the hotspot’s hardware. If the real limit is local Wi-Fi, a plan restriction, or carrier congestion, an antenna may not solve it.

What to expect from troubleshooting

There is no supported universal percentage gain for moving a hotspot or adding an antenna. Netgear’s manual provides qualitative placement advice, not a measured before-and-after result, and any outcome depends on the hotspot, location, carrier conditions, and the bottleneck. Use speed comparisons at the same place and under similar conditions to judge whether a change helped.
