There is no audio-reactive setup documented by Valve for the Steam Machine’s built-in light bar. Valve describes a configurable 17-LED RGB bar and SteamOS 3, but its available product and Steamworks pages do not explain how to make the lights respond to audio. You can customize the documented lighting and status behavior; an audio-sync Decky plugin has been mentioned by a third-party guide, but that claim and its SteamOS compatibility are unverified.
What the Steam Machine’s built-in lighting supports
Valve’s Steam Machine product page lists a configurable 17-LED RGB light bar and SteamOS 3. The page describes customizable lighting and system indications, but does not document an audio-reactive mode or provide a procedure for enabling one. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes the device as a SteamOS gaming computer and likewise contains no audio-reactive light-bar instructions.

For the supported baseline, use the Steam Machine’s own lighting customization for the colors and status behavior Valve documents. The available official information does not establish a menu path, audio setting, or built-in feature that synchronizes the bar to game or system sound, so there is no verified native setup sequence to follow.

A third-party guide search result reports that a Decky plugin called GabeCubeAura, version 1.3.2, adds audio sync to the built-in light bar. The guide could not be opened for verification, and no primary project page, release notes, installation instructions, or tested SteamOS compatibility information was located. Treat it as an unverified community lead, not a confirmed solution.

Before relying on that claim, look for a current primary project source and verify the SteamOS versions it supports, whether Decky is required, and how it captures audio. Those details affect whether the plugin can work on your device and whether it can access the sound you want to visualize. Do not install from an unattributed download or follow commands whose origin and current compatibility you cannot confirm.
Why a Windows lighting app is not a confirmed SteamOS workaround
Skydimo’s Steam store listing advertises music-rhythm visualization for supported RGB hardware, but specifies Windows 10 and Windows 11 as system requirements. The listing does not establish SteamOS compatibility or control of the Steam Machine’s integrated light bar. It is therefore a separate option for compatible external RGB hardware, not a verified way to make the built-in bar react to sound.

- SteamOS support: Confirm the current supported versions and whether updates can break the integration.
- Audio source: Establish whether it samples playback audio, a microphone, or ambient sound; those are different behaviors.
- Light control: Check whether it can address the Steam Machine’s built-in bar or only a separate strip or controller.
- Setup and reliability: Find documented requirements and a recovery method, and check whether the feature continues working after SteamOS updates.
