If your Citizen is radio-controlled, its manual will identify supported signal stations and the correct setup and reception procedure for that movement. Charge the watch, set its home city or time zone, then try manual reception using that manual’s instructions.
Check whether your Eco-Drive watch supports radio time signals
Find the model or caliber number on the caseback, then locate the matching manual through Citizen’s official support resources. Do not assume that a procedure for one Citizen watch applies to another: reception controls, time-zone settings and indicators differ by movement.

Eco-Drive and radio-controlled timekeeping are separate features. For example, Citizen Watch Global Network’s H46 Features page says that H46 receives signals from the station in Germany and automatically adjusts the time and calendar; that statement applies to H46, not every Eco-Drive watch. The same page describes its light-powered operation as needing no periodic battery replacement.

Citizen says its radio-controlled watches may support one or more stations in Japan, the United States, Germany and China; support for all four should not be assumed. A watch that does not support a station available in your region may not synchronize there.

Set up reception in the right order
- Identify the caliber. Match the caseback information to the correct Citizen manual before pressing buttons or changing settings.
- Confirm station and regional compatibility. Check which signal station or stations the movement supports and whether they can be received where you are using the watch.
- Charge the watch. If the second hand advances in two-second intervals or the watch has stopped, Citizen’s H29 troubleshooting page says the reserve is nearly empty and advises charging. Low charge can interfere with operation and reception. Follow the charging instructions for your model.
- Set the home city or time zone. Some movements use the selected world-time setting to determine which signal to seek. An incorrect setting can lead the watch to look for the wrong signal. Use the city or zone table in your own manual.
- Start manual reception using the manual’s button sequence. The controls vary by caliber; examples from H29 and U680 are below, and are not interchangeable.
- Position the watch for reception. Set it on a stable surface near a window, keep it still, and follow the manual’s antenna-position guidance if provided. Avoid assuming the antenna is in the same place on every model.
- Check the reception result. Wait until the operation ends, then read the result indicator as described in the manual. If reception fails, troubleshoot the setting, charge and environment, or use the movement’s manual time-setting procedure.
Movement-specific examples: H29 and U680
On its H29 support page, Citizen says to push the crown in and hold the button for at least two seconds to begin manual reception. The second hand first indicates the previous reception result, then points to “RX” when reception starts. Citizen identifies the H29 antenna at the 8:00 position. These details apply to H29 only.
U680 uses a different procedure involving mode selection and the lower-right button. Its manual identifies the antenna at the 9:00 position and says reception typically takes about two minutes and can take up to fifteen. Follow the U680 manual for its exact steps and result display; do not use the H29 sequence on a U680 or another caliber.

Improve the chance of a successful signal reception
- Try a stable location near a window, where the watch is less obstructed.
- Leave the watch still throughout reception.
- Use the antenna orientation specified for your caliber, if its manual gives one.
- Check that the watch is adequately charged and that its home city or time zone matches your intended setting.
- If reception fails repeatedly, consider whether the supported station is receivable where you are and whether local reception conditions are interfering.
Citizen’s H29 troubleshooting guidance notes that both reception conditions and regional coverage can cause a failed reception. Moving the watch and trying again may help, but cannot make an unsupported station or unavailable coverage compatible.

Troubleshoot a Citizen watch that will not sync
The watch shows “NO” or reception does not complete
Check the charge, station support for your region, and selected home city or time zone. Then retry near a window with the watch stationary, using the correct manual procedure. If the manual identifies a reception-result indicator, use it to distinguish a failed attempt from one that has not yet finished.

The displayed time is exactly one hour off
Check the summer-time or daylight-saving-time setting. Citizen lists an incorrect summer-time setting as a possible cause of a one-hour discrepancy. The control and labels vary by movement, so use its manual rather than changing a setting based on another model’s instructions.
Reception succeeds, but the hands still show the wrong time
Verify the home city or time-zone setting, then check the hands’ reference position as directed in the manual. Citizen notes that an incorrect reference position can leave the display wrong even after successful reception.

Automatic reception does not occur
Confirm that automatic reception is enabled and that the watch has sufficient charge, then consult the caliber’s manual for its schedule and controls. The U680 manual specifies default attempts at 2 a.m., 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., with the 4 a.m. attempt configurable. That schedule is specific to U680 and should not be treated as universal for Citizen watches.

Citizen says a radio-controlled watch can be set manually when signal reception is unavailable. Use the manual’s time-setting procedure for your caliber, including its home-city, time-zone and summer-time controls. For U680, the manual gives a movement-specific accuracy specification for manual setting; consult that manual for the applicable figure rather than applying it to another movement.

If you are choosing a replacement, compare the exact caliber’s supported stations and regional reception with the features and setup controls you need, including time-zone selection, summer-time handling, manual reception and manual time setting. The label “Eco-Drive” alone does not establish that a watch supports radio synchronization.
