Reliable Arlo alerts depend on four separate things: the camera detects motion, the active Routine has a rule for that camera, the rule sends a notification, and your phone allows the Arlo app to notify you. Set up each camera in the Arlo Secure app, then check each link in that chain. This applies to the Pro Security Camera 2K (6th Gen), also referred to as Pro 6, and the Essential 3 family; exact prompts and features can vary by camera variant and region.
How to add each camera in the Arlo Secure app
Add cameras one at a time and follow the prompts for the exact model. Arlo’s camera setup instructions recommend using the Secure app. A SmartHub or Base Station is optional for Essential wire-free cameras and Pro 4 or later models, which includes the Pro 6 family. The hub requirement differs for some older camera families, so follow the app’s model-specific instructions rather than assuming every Arlo camera connects the same way.

- In the Arlo Secure app, select the correct Location.
- Open Devices, choose the camera category, and select the exact model or variant shown in the app.
- Follow any charging or battery prompts, then continue with the connection option offered: through a SmartHub/Base Station or directly over Wi-Fi where supported.
- Complete the prompts and confirm that the camera appears online under the intended Location.
Essential 3 includes multiple variants. Check the camera’s exact model and the options displayed in the app before relying on a feature or connection instruction that may apply only to another version.

Arlo’s alert rules are tied to a Routine or mode. A camera may detect motion without sending a push notification if its rule is absent, inactive, or configured to record without notifying. In the Secure app, open Routines and inspect the mode you actually use, such as Arm Away, Arm Home, or Standby. Arlo’s push-notification instructions describe this rule setup:

- Select the Routine or mode to configure.
- Select the camera’s rule, or add a rule for that device.
- Enable Motion Detection (or audio detection if that is the event you want to detect).
- Tap Send Notification, then enable Notify Everyone under Push Notification.
- Save the rule and verify that this Routine is the one currently active.
A rule can be correct while the phone still blocks delivery. Allow notifications for Arlo in the phone’s operating-system settings and make sure you are signed in to the Arlo Secure app. For Android, Arlo provides a separate Android notification-permission workflow; menu names differ across Android versions. On iPhone or another phone system, check that system’s Arlo notification permission rather than applying Android menu labels.
Position the camera to catch useful movement
Placement affects whether the camera sees motion clearly and how quickly an event can be recorded. Arlo’s motion-detection guidance, updated in 2025, recommends mounting at least 7 feet (2 meters) above the ground or floor, angling slightly downward, and placing the camera 10–15 feet (3–4.5 meters) from expected movement. Arlo identifies 5 to 20 feet (1.5 to 6 meters) as the best motion-detection area. These are manufacturer recommendations, not guaranteed performance distances for every installation.

- Aim at a doorway, walkway, or other target so people cross the frame from side to side. Arlo says its motion sensor is more sensitive to side-to-side movement than to movement directly toward or away from the camera.
- Check the signal indicator on the camera’s device card in the app. Arlo warns that a weak connection to the router or SmartHub/Base Station can delay recording.
- Keep the camera at least 6 feet (2 meters) from a hub or router to reduce interference. Arlo recommends placing a hub centrally; its stated 300-foot range is a maximum line-of-sight figure and decreases when obstacles intervene.
Use Activity Zones and notification filters for different jobs
An Activity Zone tells the camera which part of its view to analyze for motion. A Smart Notification filter controls which kinds of events send alerts. Neither setting replaces the Routine rule that determines whether the event is saved or notified. Arlo’s Activity Zone instructions note that zone capacity and anchor points vary by model. They also indicate that zones on listed cameras may require a Secure plan, while some listed cameras can use them without a plan when connected to continuous AC power. Check the exact camera and account region in the app, as plan and feature availability vary.

Keep zones focused
Draw a narrow zone around the path or object that matters, rather than including the whole yard. Trees, flags, roads, and other repeated movement within a zone can trigger unwanted detections. If you change the camera angle, review and adjust the zone to match the new view. Arlo also recommends turning off Auto Zoom & Tracking when using Activity Zones because it can affect zone accuracy.

Choose which event types should notify you
Smart Notification switches determine which categories send notifications. Turning a category off may still leave recordings in the Feed. If you want recordings without alerts for certain event types, adjust those notification categories or use a separate Routine that records without notifications. If the camera is recording too often, narrow the zone, reposition the camera, or reduce motion sensitivity instead of merely silencing the alert.
Decide whether Smart Detection is needed
Basic motion notifications do not require Smart Detection. Arlo Smart Detection offers categories such as people, packages, vehicles, animals, and fire, and can include audio categories such as smoke/CO alarm, gunshot, scream, dog bark, or glass break. Smart Detection requires an Arlo plan, and plan options vary by region. Available categories depend on the camera and plan.

Arlo’s current instructions place these controls at Devices → device settings → Early Warning System → Smart Detection; labels may shift with app updates. If a category is missing or grayed out, check the exact camera’s available options and plan in the app. Do not assume restrictions documented for older Essential generations apply to every Essential 3 variant.

- Confirm Location and camera status. Select the correct Location and make sure the camera is online.
- Check the active Routine. Verify that the intended mode is active and contains an enabled rule for this camera.
- Check rule delivery options. Confirm that Send Notification and Notify Everyone are enabled.
- Check phone permissions and silencing. Allow Arlo notifications at the operating-system level. Review Do Not Disturb, Focus, or similar settings if alerts are being silenced.
- Check signal and placement. Look at the device-card signal indicator and adjust placement if the connection is weak or motion is outside the recommended area.
- Tune detection. If expected events are missed or nuisance events continue, adjust motion sensitivity and check that the target crosses the camera’s view.
- Refine zones and categories. Exclude moving foliage or traffic, review Smart Notification toggles, and—if zones seem inaccurate—turn off Auto Zoom & Tracking before reconfiguring them.
For a separate bandwidth consideration, the Essential Indoor Camera (3rd Generation) manual advises an average of at least 2 Mbps per camera for multiple 2K live streams. That figure applies to multiple 2K streams; it is not a universal minimum for alert delivery.
