1. Install Playwright and the Argos packages
From your project directory, install Playwright and Argos’s CLI and Playwright integration:

2. Register the Argos reporter
Add the Argos reporter to the Playwright configuration used in CI. Keep your existing reporter if you still need its output: specifying another reporter can replace Playwright’s default, so list both explicitly when appropriate.

3. Capture pages and states that matter

4. Run the tests in GitHub Actions
Add a workflow such as .github/workflows/ci.yml. This example installs dependencies, installs Playwright browsers and their system dependencies, then runs the tests on pushes and pull requests to main:

5. Configure Argos authentication
Argos’s May 11, 2026 changelog describes GitHub Actions authentication with GitHub OIDC. To use that route, enable it at Argos Project Settings → Authentication and grant the workflow the id-token: write permission. The changelog also describes a tokenless fallback for cases where GitHub does not issue OIDC tokens, including certain fork pull requests. Check the current project settings and workflow permissions for your case: Argos changelog.
A 2024 Argos Storybook example uses an ARGOS_TOKEN stored as a GitHub Actions secret. That is a separate integration example, not a reason to assume every current Playwright workflow must use a long-lived token. 6. Keep visual comparisons reproducible
Playwright’s native toHaveScreenshot works with reference images: the first run creates a baseline, and later runs compare against it. Argos’s Playwright guidance recommends generating and comparing screenshots in a consistent operating-system and browser environment, since rendering differences can create visual drift. If you use native baselines, keep baseline updates and CI comparisons in the same pinned environment where practical. This is a consistency recommendation, not a requirement to use a particular container: Argos Playwright visual-testing guide.

Repository settings, the selected Node version, package manager, and Argos project authentication determine the setup. Troubleshooting
- Argos reporter output is missing: check that the CI configuration includes
@argos-ci/playwright/reporterand that the workflow setsCIif your config only adds the reporter when that variable is present. - The usual Playwright reporter disappeared: retain it explicitly in the reporter array alongside Argos rather than replacing the full reporter configuration.
- The test cannot reach localhost: start the application in the workflow before Playwright runs, and use the same port and route in
page.goto. - Browser installation or launch fails: install the browser binaries and system dependencies for the runner with
npm exec playwright install --with-deps; confirm the command runs after dependency installation. - Uploads fail under OIDC: confirm OIDC is enabled in Argos Project Settings → Authentication and that the job grants
id-token: write. For fork pull requests or other cases without an OIDC token, consult Argos’s current fallback guidance. - Visual diffs appear unexpectedly: check whether screenshot generation and comparison use different operating systems or browser environments, especially when relying on Playwright reference baselines.
