You do not need to download a separate Android Auto app for car-display use; Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones.
Check compatibility before you travel
A USB port alone does not mean a car supports Android Auto. Check the compatibility information for your exact vehicle or aftermarket stereo, and confirm which connection types it supports. A vehicle may support wired Android Auto without supporting wireless projection.

Google’s current Android Auto requirements say wired use needs Android 9.0 (Pie) or later, an active data plan, a compatible car, and a high-quality USB cable. Wireless use needs a compatible phone and vehicle, an active data plan, 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, and Android 11.0 or later. Google notes regional and device qualifications for 5 GHz use in the EU; check its current requirements for your market. Google also lists supported countries and warns that most features may not work outside them.
Before choosing wireless, verify that both your phone and your particular car or stereo support wireless Android Auto—not just Android Auto generally. Requirements and availability can change, so use Google’s current page rather than treating these thresholds as permanent.

Choose wired or wireless Android Auto

Neither option is established as universally more reliable. Wired setup depends on the correct data-capable cable and port; wireless setup depends on wireless compatibility and successful pairing.
Set up Android Auto while parked
Turn on the infotainment system, put the vehicle in Park, and leave time to complete setup before driving. Google Android Auto Help advises: “Make sure your car is in park (P) with the infotainment system turned on, and allow time to set up Android Auto before you start your drive.”

For a wired connection
- With the vehicle in Park and the infotainment system on, connect a data-capable USB cable to the vehicle’s compatible Android Auto port and then to your phone.
- Follow prompts on both the phone and car display. Your phone may ask you to update.
- Wait for Android Auto to appear on the vehicle display. Open your intended navigation app and confirm that it can select a destination before setting off.
For a wireless connection
- Confirm that both your phone and the specific vehicle or stereo support wireless Android Auto.
- Park and turn on the infotainment system. Leave Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled on your phone.
- Start the vehicle’s documented process for pairing a new phone. Depending on the vehicle, you may use its Bluetooth menu, voice-command control, or another pairing control.
- Follow the prompts on both screens. Android Auto should start shortly after Bluetooth pairing; if it does not, follow any additional prompts or tap Android Auto on the vehicle display.
- Test the connection and navigation while still parked. If you cannot find the pairing controls, consult the vehicle manual or manufacturer’s instructions; menus vary by vehicle.
Prepare navigation before leaving
Android Auto can provide voice-guided directions, estimated arrival times, traffic information where available, and lane guidance in Google Maps or another supported navigation app. Set and confirm your route before you start driving. You can use a voice request such as “Navigate to [location]” or “Drive to [address].” If the voice results show multiple places, confirm the intended destination before proceeding.
You can select a destination on the car display, but entering text on that display requires the vehicle to be in Park. Do not type a destination or adjust the system while moving.

Google Maps can show traffic where traffic information is available. EV battery-use estimates and suggested charging stops are conditional: Google says the features work only for selected countries and EV models. You must add a compatible EV to Google Maps and confirm it in Android Auto. Weather and traffic can change actual energy use, so do not treat an estimate or suggested stop as a guarantee.

If you plan to connect by USB, bring a short, high-quality data cable with connectors that fit both your phone and the vehicle. Google recommends a cable under 1 metre (3 feet), without a hub or extension, and suggests checking USB-IF certification for cables from independent manufacturers. Not every USB cable works with every car.

- No Android Auto prompt: Recheck compatibility for the exact vehicle or stereo, then check whether Android Auto is enabled in its infotainment settings. A USB port by itself is not proof of compatibility.
- Wired connection is intermittent or stopped working: Try a short, high-quality data cable, remove any hub or extension, and inspect the phone and vehicle USB ports. Google notes that replacing the cable will likely fix cases where Android Auto worked before but no longer connects.
- Wireless setup does not start: Confirm that wireless Android Auto is supported by both devices, turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services, and repeat the vehicle’s first-time Bluetooth pairing process.
- You are connecting to a second car: Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guide includes steps for forgetting previously connected cars in Android Auto settings before reconnecting.
If setup still fails, Google directs users to check compatibility and connection issues or contact the vehicle manufacturer. You can also consult the vehicle or stereo maker’s instructions for its specific controls.
