Start by identifying whether Android Auto is failing over USB or wirelessly: the checks differ. Work through the relevant connection steps below while parked. Google says to have the car in Park with the infotainment system on and to allow setup time before driving.
First, identify the connection and confirm compatibility
Is the phone connected by USB or wirelessly? Also note whether Android Auto ever worked with this exact phone and car, whether anything changed recently (such as a phone, cable, car, or software update), and whether another phone or cable behaves the same way. These clues can narrow the problem, but none proves its cause.

A USB port alone does not mean a car supports Android Auto. Check that both the phone and the specific car or aftermarket stereo support Android Auto in the connection mode you want. Google’s setup guidance lists Android 9.0 (Pie) or later and an active data plan for wired use, along with a compatible car and high-quality USB cable. For wireless projection, it lists a compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, and a compatible car or stereo; the page says wireless projection is compatible with phones running Android 11.0. Requirements and availability can vary by country and device, so verify the current guidance for your market and exact models.

Check charging, ports, and cable data support
- See whether the phone charges. If it does not, investigate the cable, phone port, or vehicle port first. Inspect both ports for debris and follow the device or vehicle manufacturer’s cleaning guidance. Do not insert sharp objects.
- Try a known-good data cable. A cable that supplies power but not data cannot provide the connection Android Auto needs. Google recommends a high-quality cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet), and advises against USB hubs and cable extensions. Use connectors that fit the phone and the car’s Android Auto USB port.
- If Android shows a USB notification, check its data setting. Depending on the Android version and manufacturer, an option such as MTP or Media Transfer may be available. Labels and choices differ by device; Google’s February 23, 2024 Community specialist FAQ mentions those modes as possibilities.
If Android Auto worked before and then stopped, Google says replacing the USB cable will likely fix the issue. Treat a replacement as a useful test, not a guarantee. If the checks point to the cable, choose a short USB data cable for Android Auto that matches both connector types; a charging-only cable is not enough.

Check the car’s settings and restart its system
In the infotainment settings, make sure Android Auto is enabled. Then restart the infotainment system and try connecting again. Setting names and restart procedures vary by vehicle, so use the vehicle manual if the controls are unclear. Google’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the car’s Android Auto settings.
If Android Auto will not connect wirelessly
Complete initial setup with Bluetooth
Confirm that both the exact phone and car or stereo support wireless Android Auto; wired support does not establish wireless compatibility. For first-time setup, pair the phone and car over Bluetooth. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled while setup completes, as Google instructs in its setup guide. With Bluetooth pairing complete, Android Auto should start within a few seconds. If it does not, follow the on-screen prompts and tap Android Auto if it appears as an option.

- Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
- Requires Android 11+
- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
Pair the devices again if setup remains stuck
Use the phone’s Bluetooth settings to forget the car, and the car’s own menus to remove the phone. Then pair them again and follow the setup prompts. Menu names differ across Android versions and vehicles; consult the manuals if needed. Removing a pairing does not necessarily clear every connection setting stored by a vehicle.

If the car supports both wired and wireless Android Auto, try a USB connection as a diagnostic comparison. A successful or failed wired test can help establish whether the problem is specific to wireless use, but it does not by itself identify the root cause.

Check phone software and vehicle follow-up
Check the phone’s state and software
Make sure the phone is on and unlock it if prompted. Check for current Android Auto, Google app, and Google Play services versions. Android Auto is integrated into Android phones for use with a car display; a separate Play Store app installation is not required.
If basic checks fail, a Google Android Auto Community specialist FAQ suggests force-stopping Android Auto, then later clearing cache or storage for Android Auto, Google, and Google Play services. Treat these as later, device-dependent steps: menus vary, and clearing storage can reset app state. The FAQ was posted February 23, 2024, and Google cautions that community content may not be verified or current. Use your phone’s own settings guidance before changing app data.

Check the infotainment system and other cars
Confirm Android Auto remains enabled in the car’s settings and restart the infotainment system. If you use an aftermarket receiver, check its manufacturer’s support page for firmware updates and model-specific instructions. If the issue occurs only with a second car, Google suggests forgetting previously connected cars and trying again; see its troubleshooting steps.
For model compatibility, vehicle-specific setup, or persistent connection failures, consult the vehicle manual or contact the car or receiver manufacturer. Google recommends contacting the manufacturer if the phone still cannot connect by USB or wirelessly after compatibility and connection checks.
What to collect before escalating a persistent problem
Record the information below before contacting the vehicle or receiver manufacturer or asking for help in Google’s Android Auto support community:
- Phone model and Android version or build
- Android Auto and Google Play services versions
- Car or head-unit make and model
- Country and whether you use USB or wireless
- The exact error message, if any
- Steps already tried and whether another phone or cable changes the result
For a persistent bug, you can also follow Google’s Android Auto bug-report instructions. Google says to prepare the setup while parked and keep the USB or wireless connection in place while capturing the report so relevant information is retained. Follow the current instructions; do not set up or capture diagnostics while driving.
