To use PlayStation Portal Remote Play, enable Remote Play on your PS5, connect Portal to Wi-Fi, and sign in to both devices with the same PlayStation account. Portal streams games from your PS5; it is not a standalone console and does not work with PS4.
What you need before setup
- A PS5 connected to the internet, with current system software.
- A PlayStation account signed in on the PS5 and Portal. Use the same account on both.
- Broadband Wi-Fi for Portal. PlayStation lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for use and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience; actual quality depends on network conditions. See PlayStation’s Portal product information.
Prepare your PS5 for Remote Play
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play. Enable it for the user who will use Remote Play.
- If you want Portal to wake the PS5 while it is in rest mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
Keep the PS5 connected to the internet. Rest-mode wake settings are needed for starting a session remotely while the console is resting; they are not a substitute for enabling Remote Play.

Use Portal away from home
Remote Play can work over Wi-Fi away from home, but performance depends on the broadband connection and network conditions at both ends. Public Wi-Fi networks that require additional sign-in validation are supported on Portal system software 3.0.1 or later; completing that validation requires a smartphone or tablet. Availability may vary by region and software version.
Recommended Free Tools
Before relying on a public network, confirm that Portal connects to your PS5 at home. PlayStation notes that a device that has not connected for some time may not find the console, so a successful home connection is a useful first check.

Remote Play and Cloud Streaming are different
Remote Play streams from your own PS5. Cloud Streaming is a separate Portal feature, and PlayStation says it requires PlayStation Plus Premium. That subscription requirement does not apply to the Remote Play setup described here. Cloud Streaming eligibility and game catalogs can change and vary by region.

Compatibility and audio options
Portal connects to PS5 and is not compatible with PS4. PS5 media apps on the Media tab are not supported through Remote Play. For audio, you can use a compatible wired headset or earbuds with a 3.5 mm plug, or PlayStation Link devices such as PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset. These are optional; they are not required to set up Remote Play.
