For a normal first-time setup, put both AirPods in their charging case, open the lid beside your iPhone, and follow the on-screen Connect prompt. If that animation does not appear, pair them manually through Settings > Bluetooth. The exact pairing control, minimum iOS requirement, gestures, and Find My features depend on the AirPods generation.
This guide covers the setup path Apple uses across current AirPods generations, what you can do after pairing, and a fault-finding path for the most common connection and location problems.

What you need before pairing
A few checks prevent most setup failures:
- An iPhone with current iOS. Apple recommends updating iOS for full AirPods functionality. The minimum supported iOS version is not identical for every AirPods generation, so do not apply one version number to all models.
- AirPods in their charging case. Put both earbuds in the case before starting the automatic setup. Keep the case sufficiently charged so the phone can complete pairing and the earbuds can remain connected.
- The correct AirPods generation. Pairing controls differ. Some newer cases use a double-tap on the front, while other generations use a setup button on the back. Identify the model before following a button-specific instruction.
- Your Apple Account, if you want automatic setup on other supported Apple devices or Find My. AirPods associated with the same Apple Account can receive automatic setup on supported devices.
Keep the case open during the initial process. Closing it or removing the earbuds can make the setup animation disappear before the connection is complete.

Connect AirPods with the automatic iPhone setup
- Update the iPhone. Install the latest iOS available for the phone if it is not already current. This is especially important when the AirPods are a newer generation.
- Go to the Home Screen. You do not need to begin inside Bluetooth settings for the automatic method.
- Open the charging case with both AirPods inside. Hold the open case next to the iPhone.
- Wait for the setup animation. When it appears, tap Connect.
- Complete any additional prompts. Apple may show extra on-screen directions for the particular AirPods generation or account configuration.
- Tap Done. The AirPods are now paired with the iPhone and can be selected for audio and calls.
Do not move on to manual pairing simply because the animation takes a moment to load. Keep the open case beside the phone and check that the earbuds are seated inside it. If the prompt still never appears, use the manual method below.

Pair manually when the animation is missing
Manual Bluetooth pairing is the fallback when the case prompt does not appear. The first step is model-dependent: put the AirPods into pairing mode using the control specified for that generation. Apple’s current instructions describe a double-tap on the front of some newer cases and a setup button on the back of other cases. Because the controls are not universal, use the control that belongs to your exact model rather than guessing.
- Open the case and leave the AirPods inside.
- Activate pairing mode using the generation-specific case control. Use the front double-tap or rear setup button only when that is the control for your model.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the iPhone. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is available for pairing.
- Select the AirPods in the device list. Tap the AirPods name when it appears.
- Follow any confirmation or setup directions. Finish the prompts shown by iOS.
If the AirPods do not appear in the Bluetooth list, repeat pairing mode with the case open and close enough to the iPhone to maintain a reliable signal. Confirm that the earbuds are inside the case and that the case has charge. If you are unsure which control your case uses, identify the generation first; repeatedly using the wrong control will not put that model into pairing mode.
How automatic setup works across Apple devices
When the iPhone and AirPods are associated with the same Apple Account, supported Apple devices can receive automatic setup as well. That means you may not need to repeat the complete first-time pairing procedure on every supported device. The feature is account- and device-dependent, so seeing the AirPods on one Apple device does not guarantee identical behavior on every other device.
The iPhone that completes the initial pairing remains the best place to verify the connection. If another supported Apple device does not show the AirPods automatically, use that device’s normal Bluetooth selection process after confirming that the AirPods are already paired and available.
Confirm the connection and choose the AirPods for use
After setup, the AirPods should be available as an audio output for the iPhone. Pairing establishes the relationship; connecting is the moment the iPhone routes sound or call audio through them. Keep the case and earbuds charged, and keep them within normal Bluetooth range while testing the first connection.

If sound remains on the iPhone instead of the AirPods, open Settings > Bluetooth and check that the AirPods are listed and selected. If they are absent, repeat the manual pairing sequence rather than changing gesture settings. If they are listed but a particular control does not work, continue to the model-control section: pairing and gesture configuration are separate issues.
Use AirPods for music, video, and other audio
Once connected, AirPods can play audio from the iPhone. Controls on the earbuds or headphones can pause or resume playback and skip tracks, but the available action and the physical or touch gesture vary by generation.

Use the control assigned to your model for play or pause and track skipping. Some generations use a press, while others use a touch surface or another interaction. Do not assume that a gesture from one generation exists on another.
Supported options can be adjusted in the AirPods settings on the iPhone. Open the AirPods settings entry after the earbuds are connected and review the controls that iOS exposes for that model. If an option is not shown, it is not available for that generation or current configuration.
Calls
AirPods can make and answer calls from the iPhone. The call-answer control is model-dependent, just like playback controls. Test it during a convenient call so you know which press or touch action your pair uses before relying on it in a time-sensitive conversation.

Messages and other features
With the AirPods connected, the iPhone can use them for messages and other supported features in addition to ordinary audio. Which features and controls appear depends on the AirPods generation, the iPhone’s iOS version, and the settings enabled on the phone.

Siri can use connected AirPods for tasks such as finding information, playing music, and handling calls. Voice activation and press or touch activation differ by generation, so configure Siri on the iPhone first and then use the activation method shown for your model.
Prepare Siri on the iPhone
- Configure Siri in iPhone settings. Complete the iPhone’s Siri setup before testing AirPods voice activation.
- Connect the AirPods. Siri needs an active AirPods connection when you invoke it through the earbuds or headphones.
- Use the model’s supported activation method. Depending on the generation, this may be voice activation or a press or touch control.
- Speak a short request. Try a request to find information, start music, or handle a call, then confirm that the response comes through the AirPods.
If Siri works from the iPhone but not through the AirPods, check the AirPods control assignment in the connected-device settings. A missing voice option can be a generation limitation rather than a pairing fault.
Set up Find My before the AirPods are lost
AirPods paired with an Apple Account device can appear in Find My. Set this up while the AirPods are available; Find My cannot reliably recreate a connection after the pair has already gone missing.
What Find My can show
For supported combinations of model, settings, connection state, and region, Find My can provide a map location, play a sound, or offer a nearby-finding option. These capabilities are not identical across generations or countries.

Why a location may be incomplete
An offline or uncharged pair may show only a last known location, or no location at all. A last known location is not proof that the AirPods are still there. Treat the map as the most recent location available to Find My, then use sound or nearby finding only when those options are offered for that model and connection state.
Regional and model limits
Find My availability can vary by country or region. Even where the service is available, a particular AirPods generation may support fewer features than another. Check the options displayed for your own pair instead of assuming that every AirPods model has map, sound, and nearby finding together.

Apple’s setup instructions cover several generations, but the details cannot be collapsed into one universal procedure. Use this comparison when deciding which instructions apply:

This table is a decision aid, not a substitute for identifying the model. If a control or feature is not present on your iPhone, do not force the procedure; use the options iOS displays for that pair.
Troubleshoot an AirPods connection
The setup animation never appears
- Return to the Home Screen.
- Keep both AirPods in the open case and hold it beside the iPhone.
- Confirm that the iPhone is running current iOS.
- If the prompt still does not appear, identify the case generation and activate its pairing mode.
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth and select the AirPods manually.
This path addresses the two common causes documented by Apple: the automatic prompt has not appeared, or the case has not entered the correct pairing mode.

The AirPods do not appear under Bluetooth
Check that the case is open, the earbuds are inside, and the model-specific pairing control was used. Then leave the Bluetooth screen open while repeating pairing mode. If you used a front double-tap on a case that requires a rear setup button, or vice versa, the iPhone will not see the pair as ready to connect.
The iPhone connects but a gesture does nothing
Connection and control assignment are different. Open the connected AirPods settings on the iPhone and review the supported actions. The available controls differ by generation, so an action that works on one pair may not be offered on another.
Siri does not respond through the AirPods
Verify that Siri is configured on the iPhone, that the AirPods are connected, and that you are using the activation method supported by that generation. A missing voice-activation option can reflect model or settings limits rather than a failed Bluetooth pairing.

Find My shows an old location or nothing
Confirm that the AirPods were paired with an Apple Account device and that Find My was set up before they went missing. If the pair is offline or uncharged, Find My may provide only a last known location or no location. Nearby-finding and sound playback appear only for supported models, settings, connection states, and regions.
A practical first-day checklist
- Update iOS before pairing.
- Identify the AirPods generation and its case pairing control.
- Open the charged case with both earbuds inside beside the iPhone.
- Tap Connect in the setup animation, complete extra prompts, and tap Done.
- If the animation is absent, use pairing mode and Settings > Bluetooth.
- Test playback, track skipping, a call, and Siri using the controls shown for your model.
- Review AirPods settings on the iPhone and adjust only the options that iOS makes available.
- Confirm Find My while the AirPods are present and connected, before you need to locate them.
When to stop troubleshooting and recheck the model
If the same instructions repeatedly fail, the most useful next step is often not another gesture or button press but a model check. AirPods generations share the same broad setup flow, yet differ in minimum iOS support, case controls, gestures, Siri activation, and Find My capabilities. Match the case control and feature expectations to the exact generation, then repeat the automatic or manual setup path once.
