How to Secure an ASUSTOR NAS Before Accessing It Remotely

A practical pre-access checklist for updating, hardening, and safely choosing a remote connection method for an ASUSTOR NAS.

Before making an ASUSTOR NAS reachable from outside your home or office, update ADM and its apps, secure administrator accounts, disable services you do not need, protect browser access with HTTPS, and arrange current, separate backups. Then choose the narrowest remote-access method you can maintain—preferably a VPN if you can secure its endpoint. A Cloud ID or router setup can simplify access, but convenience does not establish that the NAS is securely configured.

Why preparation matters

Remote access changes who can reach a service on your NAS. If the ADM management interface or another service is exposed, it is no longer reachable only by people on your local network. ASUSTOR warns that Internet-accessible devices and services are at risk of attack, and cautions that connecting a NAS directly to the Internet without a router or firewall may increase the chance of malicious attacks.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That does not mean every remote-access method has the same exposure. A VPN, a cloud-assisted connection, and a router port-forward each create different paths into the NAS. The important questions are what service becomes reachable, whether ADM itself is exposed, what security controls protect the endpoint, and whether you can keep the configuration and software current.

Use the preparation sequence below before enabling a remote route. The exact menu names and available controls can vary by NAS model and ADM release, so confirm instructions against the documentation for your own device rather than assuming that a menu path applies to every model.

Prepare the NAS before opening remote access

1. Identify the model, ADM branch, and installed apps

Record the NAS model, its current ADM version, and the versions of installed applications. These details determine which updates apply and whether a feature or security control is available. Consult ASUSTOR’s security advisories and release notes for fixes that apply to your model and ADM branch. Do not rely on an old setup guide or a version number quoted for a different branch.

2. Install applicable updates

Update ADM and installed applications before exposing any service. Follow the release guidance for your device and check compatibility before applying a branch-specific update. Security notices can affect different ADM branches while specifying different minimum fixed releases, so “the latest version” is not a useful substitute for checking the notice that matches your installation.

For example, ASUSTOR advisory AS-2026-019, dated August 17, 2026, described three path-traversal vulnerabilities affecting stated ranges in ADM 4.1–4.3 and ADM 5.0–5.1. It listed ADM 4.3.3.RWC1 or later as fixing the listed issues on ADM 4.1–4.3, and ADM 5.1.4.RJV2 or later for ADM 5.0/5.1. The notice identified CVE-2026-67245 in VPN Clients, CVE-2026-67246 in Wallpaper, and CVE-2026-67247 in IHM log handling. ASUSTOR assigned CVE-2026-67245 a CVSS 4.0 base score of 7.0; that score refers to that specific issue, not to remote access generally. These are details of one dated advisory, not a guarantee that those are the newest applicable releases or notices. Check the advisory index for newer information and verify the applicable update for your model.

3. Replace default routine administrator use

Create a named administrator account for your own administration and set a unique, strong password that you do not reuse on another service. Avoid using the default admin account for routine access. If 2-step verification is available for your account and device, enable it. ASUSTOR’s learning catalog covers 2-step verification, but the presence of a course does not mean the feature is available in every ADM version or configuration.

Use the account you need for a task rather than leaving an administrator session signed in for ordinary file access. Keep your credentials private, and do not treat an unusual port number as a substitute for account protection.

4. Turn off services you do not need

Review enabled services and disable those that are not required for your intended use. ASUSTOR specifically advises turning off Terminal/SSH and SFTP when they are not needed. Apply the same principle to other services: if you have no use for a service, do not leave it running or make it reachable from outside the network.

Decide what you actually need to do remotely—such as administer ADM or access files—and use that to determine which services, if any, must be available. Avoid exposing general file-sharing or management services simply because they are enabled by default or offered by a setup wizard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Protect browser-based administration

Enable HTTPS, configure a valid certificate for the address you will use, and administer the NAS using that HTTPS address. A certificate helps the browser establish an encrypted connection to the intended name; using HTTPS does not by itself secure a weak account or make an unnecessary service safe to expose. ASUSTOR recommends encrypted channels such as VPN or SSL for remote connections and provides learning material on HTTPS and certificates.

If the browser reports a certificate problem, do not dismiss the warning as a normal part of remote access. Check that the address you entered matches the certificate configuration and that the certificate is valid for that address. Do not enter administrator credentials over a connection whose identity you cannot verify.

6. Set a restrictive firewall policy

Use the NAS firewall or ADM Defender controls available on your release, along with router protections, to allow only the traffic your chosen setup requires. Review existing rules rather than assuming that a firewall is restrictive simply because it is enabled. Keep the rule set understandable: know which service each allowed connection is for and remove rules that no longer have a purpose.

ADM security controls and their interface can differ by release. ASUSTOR’s training catalog identifies security courses, but it does not establish that every control or screen is present on every device. Consult the guide for your model and ADM version before changing a rule that could block local administration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Confirm backups and a recovery route

Maintain regular, current backups and aim for a 3-2-1 approach: three copies of important data, on two types of storage, with one copy kept separately from the NAS. An external USB drive can serve as one physical copy, but one drive by itself is not a complete 3-2-1 strategy. Check that your model supports the backup workflow you plan to use, that the backup has enough capacity, and that the copies are independent rather than all accessible through the same NAS.

Know how to restore files before you need to. A backup that has never been checked for completeness or tested for restoration may not provide the recovery you expect. Keep backup copies current, and consider the effect of leaving a backup drive continuously connected when deciding how to protect it.

Choose a remote-access route

Pick the route based on the service you need, the amount of exposure it creates, and whether you can maintain it. ASUSTOR documents VPN, EZ-Connect, and manual router configuration as remote-access options. Its FAQ also discusses network storage protocols. A route’s ease of setup is not a security assessment: inspect the resulting configuration and confirm which services can be reached.

Route What it does Trade-offs and checks
VPN to the home or office network Connects a remote device to the network so it can reach NAS services as a network client. Can avoid publishing the ADM web interface directly, but requires a VPN endpoint and ongoing configuration. Secure and update the VPN endpoint itself; the word “VPN” does not make an insecure endpoint safe. Supported implementations vary by router, NAS, and setup.
EZ-Connect Uses an ASUSTOR Cloud ID and guided setup that can involve router configuration. Convenient to configure, but check which services become reachable. Depending on the connection path, performance and application support can differ; relay connections may be slower, may not work with some applications, and may have limited bandwidth.
Manual forwarding with DDNS Lets the owner configure router rules for selected services and use a hostname through DDNS. Offers control over which services are forwarded, but a mistaken or overly broad rule can expose an unintended service. Router menus and support vary; review every rule and remove obsolete ones.
Direct connection without a router or firewall layer Places the NAS directly on an Internet connection without that protection layer. ASUSTOR warns this may make malicious attacks more likely. It is not the default approach to recommend.

When a VPN is the right fit

A VPN is a strong choice when you can configure and maintain the VPN endpoint on your router or another suitable device. After connecting, use only the NAS services you need. The VPN endpoint itself needs appropriate authentication, updates, and monitoring; putting it in front of the NAS shifts the entry point rather than eliminating the need to secure one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check with EZ-Connect

EZ-Connect uses a Cloud ID and can assist with router setup. ASUSTOR’s online help describes a connection process that may try a LAN IP or EZ-Router first and use a relay if those routes fail. A relay can be slower, may not support some applications, and can have limited bandwidth. After setup, test the particular task you need—browser administration, file access, or an application—and check which services are reachable rather than assuming that every feature uses the same route.

What to check with manual forwarding and DDNS

Manual configuration gives you control over router rules and the services they expose, but that control also means you are responsible for the result. Forward only the ports required by the intended service. Review the router’s forwarding table and the NAS service settings together so the rule points to the expected device and service. DDNS provides a hostname; it does not encrypt traffic or secure the service behind that name.

ASUSTOR includes changing default port numbers among its recommendations. Treat that only as an additional measure: a non-default port does not replace authentication, updates, HTTPS, or limiting exposure. Do not forward SSH, SFTP, general file-sharing, or administrative services unless you have a clear need and have secured the service and its endpoint.

Enable the chosen route and verify what it exposes

  1. Write down the access need. Specify whether you need ADM administration, file access, or a particular application. Use that list to decide which service should be reachable remotely; do not enable every available method as a precaution.
  2. Configure one route at a time. Set up the VPN, EZ-Connect, or selected manual router rules using instructions for your NAS, ADM release, and router. If a wizard configures router access, inspect the resulting rules and services rather than treating completion of the wizard as proof of a secure setup.
  3. Check the connection from outside your local network. Use a device on a different network—for example, a phone with Wi-Fi turned off and mobile data enabled—to test the intended access. A successful test from the home Wi-Fi only confirms local reachability, not Internet reachability.
  4. Check the browser connection. When administering through a browser, use the HTTPS address and confirm that the browser presents the certificate you intended to configure. Investigate certificate warnings or an unexpected address before entering credentials.
  5. Try only the services you intended to expose. Confirm that the required task works, then verify that unneeded services are not reachable through the chosen route. With manual forwarding, inspect each router rule; with EZ-Connect, check the services made available by its setup; with a VPN, check the access granted to the remote client.
  6. Review settings and logs. Use the relevant ADM and router controls to review connection activity and current rules. Remove an access rule or service you no longer use, and investigate activity you cannot explain rather than assuming it is harmless.
  7. Repeat the check after meaningful changes. Retest after ADM or app updates, router changes, or enabling or disabling applications. A configuration that was narrow before a change may not remain so if services or forwarding rules have changed.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Opening access before patching: Check the current notices for the correct ADM branch, update applicable ADM and apps, and only then enable the chosen route.
  • Assuming an unusual port is enough: Keep the port change, if used, secondary to strong unique credentials, 2-step verification where supported, HTTPS, updates, and a narrow firewall policy.
  • Leaving remote services enabled “just in case”: Turn off services you do not need, including Terminal/SSH and SFTP when unused. Enable a service only when there is a specific task that requires it.
  • Confusing DDNS with security: A hostname makes an address easier to find; it does not encrypt a connection or protect an account. Apply the same transport and access controls as with a numeric address.
  • Trusting a successful wizard without review: Guided setup can make access convenient, but it does not tell you whether all resulting services are appropriate. Inspect the route and test from outside the LAN.
  • Relying on a single backup drive: Treat the USB drive as one possible copy, not the entire backup plan. Keep separate copies and understand how to restore them.

Maintain the setup over time

Remote security is ongoing because the NAS software, applications, router rules, and access needs can change. Check ASUSTOR’s advisory list and release notes when updates are available, and review the specific advisory for the ADM branch and model in use. Apply relevant updates according to the release guidance, then verify that the service you depend on still works and that the exposure remains limited.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Periodically remove old forwarding rules, disabled accounts, and services that are no longer required. Review logs and settings when something changes or appears unexpected. Keep backups current and separate, and verify that the restore process remains usable. If a service is no longer needed remotely, disable its remote route instead of leaving it exposed for possible future use.

The safest practical configuration is not the one with the most security features enabled; it is the one with an understood access path, a small set of necessary services, current software, protected credentials, and a recovery plan you can maintain.
