Set up a personal VPN with its app
- Check device support. Choose a VPN service with an official app for the device you want to use, such as a phone or computer. For a work or school device, ask its administrator which VPN to use.
- Install the app. Create an account if needed, then get the app from the service’s official website or your device’s official app store. A provider’s setup guide describes this as the ordinary route for personal use; manual setup is more useful for certain work or school networks, custom configurations, routers, or devices without an app (NordVPN’s setup guide).
- Sign in and approve the connection request. Open the app and sign in. Your operating system may ask permission to add or configure a VPN connection; approve it if you trust the app you installed.
- Connect. Tap Connect, Quick Connect, or the app’s equivalent. Button names differ between providers. For ordinary use, the app generally selects a server and connection protocol automatically.
- Confirm the status. Look for a connected message in the app or a VPN indicator on the device. Platform-specific checks are below.
How do I know my VPN is connected?
Check the VPN app first: it should show an active connection, often with a connected label or an option to disconnect. You can also check the operating system’s status. A visible connection indicator confirms that the device reports a VPN connection; it does not establish that a service makes you anonymous or prevents every form of tracking.

- Windows 11: Windows VPN settings show Connected for an active profile (Microsoft Support).
- Apple devices: Check the VPN app or the device’s VPN settings for its current connection status. Apple says VPN services typically need minimal setup on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Watch (Apple Platform Security, January 28, 2026).
Connect from Android settings
If you have a manually configured VPN profile, Google’s path is Settings → Network & internet → VPN. Select the VPN, enter a username and password if requested, then tap Connect. If you use a VPN app, Android may open that app to manage the connection. Menu labels can vary by Android version or device manufacturer; search Settings for “VPN” if the path differs (Google Android Help).

Connect on Windows 11
For the simplest setup, install and use your provider’s Windows app. To add a built-in VPN profile instead, open Settings → Network & internet → VPN → Add VPN. Enter the server address, connection type, and sign-in details supplied by your VPN provider or workplace administrator. Windows reports Connected when the profile is active (Microsoft Support).
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. These directions focus on Windows 11 rather than presenting Windows 10 as a currently supported version.

When should you change VPN settings?
Protocol
A protocol is part of how the VPN creates its connection. For routine use, leave protocol selection on the provider’s automatic or default setting. Proton VPN recommends Smart Protocol in supported apps, but protocol choices and availability vary by service and device; this is that provider’s guidance, not a universal ranking. If you have trouble connecting, first try another server location or follow your provider’s troubleshooting instructions before changing advanced settings (Proton VPN’s protocol guide).
Kill switch
A kill switch can block internet access if the VPN tunnel drops, reducing the chance that your device continues online without the VPN. It may also interrupt internet access until the VPN reconnects. Availability and behavior differ by provider and operating system, and it should not be treated as a guarantee that every app or system request is handled identically. Proton VPN, for example, documents that some Apple-service DNS requests can bypass its VPN even when its kill switch is enabled; that is a provider-specific limitation, not a claim about all VPNs (Proton VPN’s kill-switch guide).

Use a VPN on a TV or another device without an app
Some smart TVs and other devices do not offer a native VPN app. One possible workaround is a router that supports VPN client connections: configure the VPN on the router, connect the TV to that Wi-Fi network, then check that the VPN connection works. The router must support this feature and be configured correctly; a standard router does not necessarily support VPN connections. This is an optional, more involved route, not a requirement for using a VPN on a phone or computer (NordVPN’s setup guide).

A personal VPN app is set up through a service you choose. A workplace or school VPN may be centrally managed and require a particular app, profile, server address, or sign-in method supplied by the organization. Use the administrator’s directions for a managed device or network; do not substitute a personal VPN account for required work access.

Apple documents organization-managed options such as Always On and per-app VPN for supported deployments. They are administrative features, not steps most personal users need to configure (Apple Platform Security).
