First check which Steam Controller you have. The current 2026 controller charges magnetically through the Steam Controller Puck, which also works as a wireless transmitter. The original 2015 Steam Controller used AA batteries; its included dock extended the wireless dongle and did not charge the controller.
Identify your Steam Controller
Do not follow charging-puck instructions for the 2015 model. The two generations use different power and connection hardware.

The older model’s included items and connection details are listed on Valve’s 2015 Steam Controller page and shown in its quick-start guide. For that model, install the AA batteries and connect the wireless adapter to the host directly or through its extension dock, following the guide.

How to connect and use the current Steam Controller Puck
The puck connects to the PC over USB-C. To pair the current controller manually, follow Valve’s Steam Controller setup guide:

- Connect the Steam Controller Puck to your PC with a USB-C cable.
- Open Steam and make sure no game is running.
- Place the controller on the puck to begin manual pairing.
The puck serves two functions: it transmits wirelessly and provides the magnetic charging interface. Valve lists USB-C as the connector and also supports wired play over USB-C.
How to tell whether the controller is charging
Check the controller’s LED while it is connected to the puck. Valve’s status reference describes these indications:

- Breathing white: the controller is connected to the puck and charging.
- Breathing orange: the controller is not connected but is charging; Valve says this indication turns off when charging is complete.
Valve lists an 8.39 Wh battery and 35+ hours of gameplay on the current product page. That page notes some specifications may change ahead of availability. It does not state a fixed charge time.

- Do not charge or use the controller if it gets wet; the controller is not water resistant.
- Keep metallic objects clear of both the controller and puck before connecting them. Each contains a magnet.
- Do not use damaged cables or components.
- Do not try to prevent the puck from separating from the controller if pulled hard enough. Valve states: “The wireless adapter/charging puck (Steam Controller Puck) will separate from the Controller (Steam Controller) if pulled hard enough.”
- Keep the controller within its stated operating temperature of 32°F–95°F (0°C–35°C). Its stated storage range is -4°F–140°F (-20°C–60°C).
Choosing a desk stand
The Steam Controller Puck itself is the charging accessory for the current model. A separate holder or stand is optional; the available information does not establish a specific third-party stand as compatible. Check that any stand is explicitly designed to fit the 2026 controller and puck before buying, rather than assuming a generic controller dock will work.
