Amazon has separate instructions for the 2nd- and 3rd-generation models, so check which one you have before relying on included accessories.
What you need before setup
- Your Fire TV Stick 4K and remote, with the remote batteries ready.
- A TV with an available HDMI port and a nearby power source.
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password.
- An Amazon account, or the ability to create or verify one during setup.
Check the packaging and the guide for your exact generation: Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation) setup instructions list a USB-C power cable and remote batteries, while its 2nd Generation instructions list a power cable, adapter, AAA batteries and an optional HDMI extender. Included items vary by generation; do not assume an adapter or extender is in every box.

Set up and register the Fire TV Stick 4K
- Prepare the remote. Insert its supplied batteries, observing the polarity marks.
- Connect power. Attach the supplied power cable to the stick and connect it to its power source. For the 2nd Generation, Amazon instructs users to plug the power adapter into a wall outlet rather than the TV’s USB port. Follow the power guidance for your specific model.
- Connect the stick to the TV. Insert it into an available HDMI port. If the port is cramped or the TV’s design prevents a clean fit, use a suitable HDMI extender if one is available or needed.
- Select the correct TV input. Turn on the TV and use its Input or Source control to choose the HDMI port holding the Fire TV Stick.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Follow the TV prompts. Depending on the screen shown, scan the displayed QR code with a phone or select your Wi-Fi network with the remote and enter its password.
- Register to your Amazon account. Use the on-screen QR code, or open amazon.com/code on a phone or computer and enter the activation code displayed on the TV. Complete the account sign-in or verification prompts.
- Finish the remaining prompts. Follow any additional setup screens, including equipment-control setup if it is offered.

Fix common setup problems
The remote will not pair
Hold the remote’s Home button for about 10 seconds, or until the pairing prompt appears on the screen. Amazon gives this guidance for both generations; see the 3rd Generation instructions or 2nd Generation instructions.

Your Wi-Fi network is missing or the connection fails
Check that you selected the right network and entered its password correctly. If the password is the problem, Amazon advises contacting your internet service provider. For further connection steps, use Amazon’s Wi-Fi setup troubleshooting guide.
The screen reports insufficient power
Check the power cable and adapter, and follow the low-power guidance for your model. For the 2nd Generation, use the supplied power adapter and a wall outlet rather than the TV’s USB port. The 3rd Generation guide also addresses insufficient-power notifications and compatible power accessories.

The stick does not fit or reach the HDMI port comfortably
An HDMI extender can help when the TV’s port is difficult to access or there is not enough clearance. It is a conditional fix, not a required purchase; check whether one came with your model before buying one.

You cannot sign in to your Amazon account
If you have forgotten the password, reset it through Amazon’s account-recovery process. If your account has no password, the 3rd Generation instructions say to press Back when asked for one, then use the displayed address and verification code to continue. Follow the prompt on your screen if it differs.

Which generation’s accessories should you use?
The setup process is broadly similar, but Amazon lists different included accessories for the two generations. Use the actual item supplied with your device and the matching guide; add an accessory only to solve a specific fit, power or cable-reach problem.
