To install a standard TP-Link wireless router, connect your modem or active Ethernet wall jack to the router’s WAN/Internet port, power on the equipment, join the router’s default Wi-Fi or connect by Ethernet, then follow setup in the Tether app (if supported) or the router’s web page. ISP connection details and exact setup screens vary by provider, model, and hardware revision, so use the support guide for your exact router.
Before you connect the router
Identify what provides your internet connection: a separate modem, an ISP modem/router combo, or an active Ethernet wall jack. This guide covers a standard TP-Link wireless router. A modem-router combo or a portable, 4G, or 5G router can have different connection and setup requirements; check the documentation for that device.

If your ISP supplied a connection type or special settings, have them ready. In particular, ask whether your service uses PPPoE credentials or requires a VLAN ID. Do not guess these values.
Connect the modem and router
- Turn off or unplug the modem if you have a separate modem. TP-Link’s classic web setup guide recommends connecting the equipment while the modem is powered off.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the modem’s Ethernet output to the TP-Link router’s WAN/Internet port. If your home has an active Ethernet wall jack instead, connect that jack to the router’s WAN/Internet port.
- Power on the modem and wait for it to restart, then power on the router. The router’s exact indicators and startup time depend on the model; consult its manual rather than relying on a universal LED pattern.
TP-Link illustrates these wiring options in its Tether setup guide and its classic web management setup guide.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Connect a phone or computer to the router
Join the router’s default Wi-Fi network using the network name and password printed on its label. The label location and default network details vary by model. Alternatively, connect a computer to one of the router’s LAN ports with an Ethernet cable.
Choose the setup method
Use the Tether app if your model supports it
Open TP-Link Tether and follow the router setup prompts. App availability and the screens shown depend on the specific router, so check TP-Link’s Tether setup instructions for model fit.

Use the router’s web management page
While your phone or computer is connected to the router’s network, open a browser and go to tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1. These are local management addresses; internet access is not required just to reach the router’s local page. Follow the wizard that appears. TP-Link maintains separate guides for the Classic interface and New interface; follow the one that matches your screen.

Select the internet connection type specified by your ISP. TP-Link setup screens may offer options such as Dynamic IP, PPPoE, and Static IP. If the provider uses PPPoE, enter the username and password it supplied. Enter a VLAN ID only if your ISP requires one. If you do not know which connection type or values to use, ask the ISP before continuing.

If another router is already in use
Decide which device should handle routing before connecting the TP-Link router behind an existing router. TP-Link’s New interface guide recommends considering Access Point mode when connecting to another router to avoid Double NAT issues. The right choice depends on your network layout and the features you need; consult the ISP or existing router documentation if you are unsure which device should route traffic.

Check that the installation works
- Reconnect your phone, computer, and other devices to the Wi-Fi name you set, if you changed it.
- Try opening a website or otherwise using an internet-connected service.
- If there is no connection, check that the incoming Ethernet cable is plugged into the router’s WAN/Internet port and verify any ISP-provided connection details.
- Restart the modem and router in the order recommended by their manufacturers, then try again.
- If the problem remains, open the support page for the router’s exact model and hardware version. Do not assume a reset procedure or indicator pattern is the same across TP-Link models.
TP-Link’s router login guide also explains local access requirements and directs users to model-specific support.
