If you want a compact 4K TV for both PC gaming and everyday viewing, the 42-inch LG C6 OLED is the strongest current near-size pick in the reviewed recommendations. It is not a 40-inch TV: the best-supported premium choices cluster at 42 and 43 inches, so check the set’s actual dimensions and stand footprint before buying.
Best near-40-inch 4K TV: LG C6 OLED
RTINGS names the 42-inch LG OLED42C6PUA its leading choice in its guide to 40-, 42- and 43-inch TVs, updated September 15, 2026, and also recommends the C6 for PC-monitor use. Its four HDMI 2.1 inputs, support for up to 4K at 165Hz, and compatibility with HDMI Forum VRR, FreeSync and G-SYNC make it the most convincing fit here for a PC gamer who also wants a living-room TV. RTINGS reports that it displays chroma 4:4:4 correctly, an important detail for keeping fine desktop text clear. RTINGS’ compact-TV guide and PC-monitor recommendations provide the model-specific findings.

What the 165Hz specification does—and does not—mean
Up to 4K at 165Hz is a supported input capability, not a promise that every game will render at that resolution and frame rate. The PC’s graphics hardware, game, cable, selected TV input and settings all affect the signal you can use. Check the exact regional model and the specifications for the input you plan to connect to; do not assume every port or configuration behaves identically.
Using it as a desktop monitor
Correct chroma 4:4:4 support helps preserve fine color detail in text, but setup and viewing conditions still matter. Configure the TV’s PC input and the computer’s display output appropriately, then check text at your real desk distance. A large 42-inch screen may be comfortable from a sofa but too tall or wide for a shallow desk.

Alternatives if your room or priorities differ
Samsung S90H: consider it for a bright room
The 42-inch Samsung QN42S90HAEXZA is a same-size OLED alternative. RTINGS identifies its matte screen coating as an advantage in brighter rooms, while finding the LG brighter overall and more versatile in image processing. Choose between them based on your room’s reflections and the picture-processing trade-off, not the assumption that all OLED screens handle ambient light alike. See RTINGS’ size-specific comparison and its PC-monitor guide.
Sony XR30M2: a 43-inch option with Google TV
The 43-inch Sony K-43XR30M2 is a mid-range alternative for someone who values Google TV and anti-reflective treatment. RTINGS lists four HDMI 2.1-bandwidth inputs, 120Hz and VRR, but describes its dark-room contrast and peak brightness as weaker than the LG’s. It is one inch larger diagonally than the LG C6, so compare the cabinet or desk measurements rather than relying on the size label alone. RTINGS’ compact-TV guide has the model assessment.

LG C5: useful prior-generation comparison
If you are considering an earlier model, What Hi-Fi lists the 42-inch LG C5 as a 4K OLED with webOS 25 and four 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 inputs. Its listed gaming features include 4K/144Hz, VRR, ALLM, Dolby Vision game mode and HGiG. These are C5-specific details; do not assume they describe the C6. Availability and regional model suffixes can vary. What Hi-Fi’s C5 review covers that generation. TechRadar also includes the C5 and 43-inch Samsung QN90F Neo QLED among its compact-TV options, but the cited guide does not establish either as a stronger current PC-gaming choice than the C6. Measure the space, not just the diagonal
“40-inch TV” recommendations often include 42- and 43-inch sets. Measure the available width and height, the TV’s stand footprint, and your viewing distance before settling on a model. A one- or two-inch diagonal difference can matter when the set has to fit a desk, shallow cabinet or tight alcove.

Match refresh rate and VRR to the PC
For high-refresh gaming, verify the exact model’s native panel refresh rate and which inputs support the needed HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. Confirm that the TV and graphics card support the same variable-refresh-rate standard: the C6 is listed with HDMI Forum VRR, FreeSync and G-SYNC support. The recommendations reviewed here do not provide numeric input-lag measurements, so they do not establish a precise latency ranking among these models.
Think about glare, films and streaming
OLED contrast can suit films and games in a darker room, while ambient light and reflections may make a different screen treatment more appealing. The S90H’s matte coating is its stated bright-room differentiator in RTINGS’ comparison. For general entertainment, also check the HDR formats, upscaling, streaming apps and speakers against the services and equipment you actually use. The cited comparisons do not establish a universal winner for audio quality or app availability.
