To activate a Verizon Asurion replacement phone on your existing line, connect it to Wi-Fi, follow the replacement’s included setup instructions, and use the SIM or eSIM method specified for that device. Restore your data after cellular service is working. You may not need to move your old SIM: Verizon says insurer-sent replacements may require it, but the requirement depends on the phone.
Before you activate the replacement phone
Have the old phone available if it still works, and prepare these items before switching:

- Connect the replacement phone to Wi-Fi.
- Back up or save the old phone’s content if possible.
- Have your Verizon account PIN ready.
- Set up the phone within Verizon’s mobile coverage area.
- Check the replacement’s included instructions for the correct SIM or eSIM process.

- Read the replacement instructions. Use the model-specific directions that came with the Asurion replacement. A replacement device’s activation is separate from filing the insurance claim.
- Power off both phones before handling a physical SIM. Insert or move a SIM only if the replacement’s instructions call for it. Verizon’s general activation guide says to power off both devices first and insert a SIM only when needed. Verizon: Activate a New Device for an Existing Verizon Customer
- Turn on the replacement and follow its on-screen setup. Choose language, connect to Wi-Fi, and complete the device’s prompts. The exact screens differ between phone models and operating-system versions.
- Complete the Verizon activation prompt. Follow the phone’s instructions to connect the replacement to your existing line. If the phone uses eSIM, use the transfer or activation option presented for your device and account. Do not assume a QR code or a particular Settings menu applies to every model.
- Check cellular service. Once setup finishes, confirm the phone can make or receive a call, send or receive a text, and use mobile data with Wi-Fi turned off.
Do you need to move the old SIM card?
Not always. Verizon’s Smart Setup says, “Replacement devices sent to you by an insurer may require you to move your SIM card.” Follow the instructions included with the replacement rather than assuming the old SIM must be moved. Some replacement phones may include a SIM, while others use eSIM.

If the replacement uses a physical SIM
Move the old SIM only if the replacement instructions or activation prompts require it. If the new phone came with a SIM, use the directions provided for that SIM instead of automatically transferring the old one. If the SIM does not fit or the phone does not recognize it, stop and contact Verizon or use the support options below rather than forcing the card into the tray.
If the replacement uses eSIM
eSIM activation depends on the phone and whether you are transferring an existing line or setting up a new one. For an existing line, Verizon says My Verizon can guide the eSIM transfer. An Account Owner or Account Manager must move an existing line. Because steps vary, follow the replacement’s directions and the prompts in your Verizon account; do not use a generic QR-code or settings-menu sequence as though it were universal.

- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.

- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Restore data after cellular activation
Once the line is active, restore content using the backup or transfer method available for the old phone and replacement. Depending on your devices, that may be an Apple, Google, Verizon, or other transfer option. The process and content that can be restored vary, so check important items—such as contacts, photos, messages, and authentication apps—before wiping or returning the old phone.

If you are moving from an iPhone to an Android phone, Verizon’s existing-customer guide says to turn off iMessage on the old iPhone. Follow the current instructions for both phones for the rest of the transfer.

If the replacement phone will not activate
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi and check that the replacement is following its included setup instructions.
- Review the SIM or eSIM status. Confirm that the physical SIM is inserted only if required, or that the eSIM transfer for your existing line has completed.
- Restart the phone if appropriate and retry the on-screen activation steps.
- Use Verizon’s activation route or contact Verizon support if the line still does not connect. Account authorization may matter, particularly for an eSIM transfer.
- Ask about Asurion or Tech Coach assistance. Verizon Smart Setup directs customers who remain disconnected to Asurion digital assistance or live Tech Coach help.
What setup help may Asurion provide?
Asurion’s Verizon Claims page says, “We’ll make sure it’s set up and activated.” That promise is subject to eligibility and availability: Asurion and Verizon terms describe setup services for eligible insurance replacements in select locations and for select smartphones. Depending on the circumstances, assistance may include activation, data migration, initial configuration, or connectivity help. Eligibility can depend on location, phone model, claim timing and approval, and expert availability.
