For a reliable RLCraft server, install the separate RLCraft Server Pack 1.12.2, Release v2.9.3 in a clean Forge 1.12.2 server directory, run it with Java 8, accept the EULA, allocate memory in a start script, and then edit server.properties. Every player must install the identical RLCraft release. The server pack is essential: the regular client pack contains client-only mods that can make a dedicated server stop during startup.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
What you need before installing
Use the current 1.12.2 server release
The RLCraft release identified for this setup is RLCraft 1.12.2 Release v2.9.3. The download area also provides a separate file named RLCraft Server Pack 1.12.2 – Release v2.9.3.zip. Download that server archive rather than unpacking the ordinary client profile on a server. RLCraft 2.9.3 is described as a minor update for Minecraft 1.12.2: TickProfiler was removed, while CarryOn, ShieldBreak, and RLMixins were updated.

Pack and mod-loader details can change, so check the release page and the archive’s README at the time you install. In particular, the exact Forge build for 2.9.3 is not firmly established in the available documentation. Some community guides recommend Forge 14.23.5.2860 or newer, but that recommendation should be confirmed against the pack’s current instructions rather than treated as an official requirement.
Install Java 8
RLCraft’s Minecraft 1.12.2 and older Forge stack is reported by multiple setup guides to require Java 8. Java 17 and Java 21 commonly fail with this combination. No primary pack statement confirming the requirement was available, so verify the release README or file description if it has changed since this article was published.

After installing a Java 8 distribution, open a terminal or Command Prompt and run:
java -version
The output should identify version 8. If another modpack on the machine needs Java 17 or 21, do not change the system installation back and forth; point the RLCraft start script directly at the Java 8 executable.
Choose a machine and memory target
RLCraft generates demanding structures and has a large mod list. A fast CPU, SSD storage, and a stable wired connection help more than simply adding memory. Published guides disagree substantially on RAM, so use the figures below as starting allocations, then watch actual usage and server tick performance.
| Concurrent players | Guide estimates | Practical starting point | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | About 4 GB | 4–6 GB maximum heap | Free memory, garbage-collection pauses, and tick time |
| 5–10 | 6 GB in some guides; 6–8 GB or 8–10 GB in others | 8 GB maximum heap, increasing only when usage justifies it | TPS during exploration and structure generation |
| Larger groups or heavy worlds | One guide allows as much as 10–12 GB | 10–12 GB only if the host has substantial RAM left for the operating system | Whether extra heap improves stability rather than extending pauses |
These are guide estimates, not laboratory measurements or official requirements. Giving Java nearly all of a machine’s physical memory can make the operating system swap and worsen performance. Leave several gigabytes for the operating system, backups, monitoring, and any voice or web services running on the same host.

Install the dedicated server
- Create an empty server directory. Use a short path with no existing mods or worlds, such as
C:RLCraft-Serveron Windows or~/rlcraft-serveron Linux. Keeping the directory dedicated makes it easier to replace a broken installation without losing backups. - Install Java 8 and record its path. Confirm
java -version. On Windows, locate the Java 8java.exe; on Linux, usereadlink -f $(which java)if several installations are present. - Download the server archive. In the RLCraft 1.12.2 release’s file menu, choose the server-pack download and save the ZIP. Do not use the client profile’s mods and configuration as a substitute.
- Install Forge 1.12.2 into the empty directory. Run the Minecraft Forge 1.12.2 installer, select Install server, and choose the new folder. If the pack documentation specifies a particular Forge build, use that build; otherwise, do not assume that the newest 1.12.2 installer is compatible.
- Extract the RLCraft server pack. Unzip the server archive into the same directory. When the extractor asks whether to overwrite files, allow it. The pack’s supplied libraries, mods, configuration, scripts, and launch files must remain together.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA. Start the server once from the directory. It will usually create
eula.txtand stop. Open that file, read the linked agreement, and changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you accept it. - Start it again and let it finish initialization. The first successful launch creates configuration files, the default world, logs, and additional directories. RLCraft can take considerably longer than vanilla Minecraft on this first run. Do not interrupt it while files are being generated.
- Stop cleanly. In the server console, enter
stopand wait for the save to complete. Closing the window or killing the process can corrupt region or player files.
Windows start script
Create start.bat in the server directory. Replace the Java path and heap values with those appropriate for your machine:
"C:Program FilesEclipse Adoptiumjre-8binjava.exe" -Xms4G -Xmx8G -jar forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2860.jar nogui
pause
The Forge JAR filename must match the file actually installed. If your installer creates a different Forge filename, edit the command rather than renaming files at random. -Xms is the initial heap and -Xmx is the maximum; both are adjustable without changing the world.
Linux start script
Create an executable file named start.sh:
#!/bin/sh
exec /path/to/java8/bin/java -Xms4G -Xmx8G -jar forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2860.jar nogui
Make it executable with chmod +x start.sh, then run it from the server directory with ./start.sh. Use the absolute Java 8 path when the host’s default java command points to a newer release.
Configure server.properties safely
After the first accepted-EULA launch, stop the server and edit server.properties with a plain-text editor. Keep a copy before making large changes. The following values are commonly suggested starting points by RLCraft setup guides; they are not guaranteed official defaults.

RLCraft is designed around survival progression. Changing this affects newly created player behavior, not every existing inventory decision. |

RLCraft’s balance assumes a difficult setting. Lowering it changes hostile-mob and environmental danger. |
max-players |
10 |
A guide uses 10 as a starting cap. Set it to the number your hardware and community can support. |
view-distance |
8 |
Lower values reduce chunk work and bandwidth; higher values increase the area each player keeps loaded. |
max-tick-time |
-1 |
One guide recommends disabling the watchdog timeout while troubleshooting long ticks. This can leave a genuinely hung server running, so use it deliberately and monitor the console. |
white-list |
true for private groups |
Only listed names can join. Manage entries from the console with whitelist add PlayerName and whitelist remove PlayerName. |
enable-command-block |
true when required by your world |
Some guides report that certain custom structures may not generate correctly without command blocks. Enable this only when you understand the commands your map or mods use. |
Save the file, restart the server, and check the console for a clean load. Properties are read at startup; changing the file while the process is running does not reliably apply the change.
Generate the world without overwhelming the server
RLCraft’s custom structures make unexplored terrain expensive to generate. If players spread out immediately, the server can spend most of its time creating chunks rather than ticking entities. Pre-generating a reasonable region before inviting everyone can produce a smoother first session.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Generate only the area your group is likely to use. A huge pre-generation job can consume more disk space and CPU time than the community needs.
- Run generation while nobody is playing, keep the console visible, and watch memory, CPU, and tick-time messages.
- Stop the job if the operating system begins swapping or the server becomes unresponsive; resume in smaller regions later.
- Keep regular backups of the world directory before experimenting with generation tools or deleting chunks.
Do not treat max-tick-time=-1 as a performance fix. It prevents the watchdog from terminating a process that exceeds the timeout; it does not make chunk generation faster.
Open access and connect players
For a private LAN, players can use the host’s local address. For an internet server, allow the Minecraft server port through the host firewall and router, then give players the public address or DNS name. The default Minecraft port is commonly 25565, but use the value in server.properties if you changed it. Avoid publishing an administrative panel or remote console directly to the internet.

Each player should:
- Install the RLCraft client profile for the same release as the server: 1.12.2 v2.9.3 in this setup.
- Launch the profile once so its local files and configuration exist.
- Choose Multiplayer, then Add Server.
- Enter a recognizable name and the server address, then connect.
A client on another RLCraft release can fail during login with a version or mod-list mismatch. Compare the exact release number before changing Java, deleting configs, or reinstalling Forge. Do not copy a server’s entire configuration over a client’s files unless a mod’s documentation specifically requires it.

Grant and remove operator access
From the server console, grant trusted administrators with op PlayerName and remove access with deop PlayerName. Operators can change worlds, inventories, and game rules, so keep the list short and use the whitelist for membership control.
Back up before every risky change
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world directory, player data, configuration, and scripts to another disk, and label the backup with the date and pack version. Test that a backup can actually be restored before relying on it. A backup made while region files are being written may be incomplete.
Read logs instead of guessing
The console and the logs directory show the first exception and the mod that reported it. Capture the complete startup log when asking for help; a screenshot of the final “server stopped” line usually omits the cause. Keep the original error text unchanged so class names and mod versions remain searchable.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Measure performance in play
Track free RAM, Java heap usage, CPU saturation, and tick rate while players explore, fight, and generate structures. More allocated RAM is useful only when the server is actually exhausting its heap. If memory is available but ticks remain slow, reduce view distance, limit simultaneous exploration, or improve CPU and storage rather than repeatedly increasing -Xmx.
Troubleshoot common failures
The server closes immediately
- Run the start script from a terminal or keep the Windows window open so the error remains visible.
- Check
java -versionand then check the script’s explicit Java path. A system Java 17 or 21 can still be selected if the path is wrong. - Confirm that you installed the Forge server in the intended directory and that the JAR named in the script exists.
- Verify that you extracted the server pack, not the client pack. Client-only mods are a common cause of dedicated-server startup errors.
- Read the first stack trace in
logs/latest.log. Do not delete the entire configuration or world until a backup exists.
Forge or mods report a version mismatch
Check three values together: Minecraft 1.12.2, the Forge build installed on the server, and the RLCraft release. A server built from v2.9.3 must be paired with clients running v2.9.3. If a guide’s Forge recommendation conflicts with the release README, follow the release documentation and reinstall Forge in a fresh directory rather than layering installers over an existing mod set.
Players cannot log in
- Confirm they selected the RLCraft profile rather than vanilla 1.12.2.
- Compare the client and server pack release numbers and mod lists.
- Check the address, port, firewall, and router forwarding if the server is not visible at all.
- If the error names a missing or extra mod, reinstall the matching client pack instead of adding random JARs to the server.
The world is extremely laggy during exploration
Chunk generation is the likely trigger when lag appears as players enter new terrain. Pause exploration, lower view-distance, pre-generate a smaller region while the server is empty, and watch whether CPU or memory is the limiting resource. If a process is stuck and you deliberately set max-tick-time=-1, stop it from the console or operating-system service rather than waiting for the watchdog to terminate it.
Structures or mod features are missing
Check that the correct server pack files were extracted and that the world was created after the pack was installed. Some setup guides report that command blocks must be enabled for certain custom structures. Change enable-command-block=true, restart, and test in a new area; changing the setting cannot retroactively create a structure in already generated chunks.
Using a managed host instead
A managed Minecraft host can remove Java installation, firewall, and process-supervision work. Pine Hosting documents a one-click flow in which you open the control panel’s Modpack tab, choose CurseForge, locate RLCraft, and click Install. Confirm the provider’s current supported release, Java runtime, backup policy, and resource limits before committing a world to it. One-click installation does not remove the need to match the client release or to maintain independent backups.

Version 2.9.3 is described as a minor maintenance release rather than a wholesale gameplay revision. TickProfiler, a debugging tool with no gameplay effect, was removed. CarryOn, ShieldBreak, and RLMixins were updated. Listed gameplay fixes include Atomic Deconstructor behavior on bosses, preventing Stonelings from being picked up with CarryOn, reducing Parasite Armor’s Fear and Viral effects to level 1, and fixing several duplication exploits. These changes are another reason every participant should use the same release rather than mixing files from older profiles.
Quick Recap
A practical launch checklist
- Server directory is empty before Forge installation.
- Java 8 is installed and the start script points to that executable.
- Forge 1.12.2 matches the pack’s documented build.
- The separate RLCraft server pack v2.9.3 is extracted and client-only files are not being used.
