What the stack-size multiplier does
ItemStackSizeMultiplier controls how many units of a stackable item can occupy one inventory slot. Its commonly documented default is 1.0. Increasing the number raises the stack allowance; lowering it toward 1.0 keeps the normal behavior. The multiplier is not a command that sets every item to one identical cap. Individual items can still have their own stacking rules, so two items may show different final quantities even with the same multiplier.

Before you edit anything
- Have server access. You need the host’s file manager, FTP/SFTP access, or a control-panel Settings page with permission to edit sandbox settings.
- Know the active world name. Most installations keep the file inside a world-specific directory, and changing a different world’s file will have no visible effect.
- Stop the server completely. Editing while the process is running can be overwritten at shutdown or restart. Zap-Hosting specifically warns about this overwrite risk.
- Make two backups. Download the current
SandboxSettings.ini, if it exists, and copy the complete save or world directory before experimenting. - Plan a test. Keep a small quantity of a normally stackable item available so you can compare the result after the restart.
Find the correct SandboxSettings.ini file
The path is not consistent across providers. Use the path shown by your host’s documentation or panel first, then verify that the file belongs to the world your server actually starts.

If you cannot identify the active file, stop the server and inspect the latest modified world directory after a normal shutdown. Compare its name with the world selected in the panel or launch configuration. Do not assume that a global configuration path is interchangeable with a per-world path.

Change the multiplier in the file
- Stop the server from the host panel. Wait until the status is fully stopped; do not merely close an FTP editor while the server continues running.
- Back up the save and current configuration. Download the existing INI and copy the world folder to a separate location. If the file does not exist, retain a record of the original panel settings so you can recreate them.
- Open the active
SandboxSettings.ini. Use the per-world location or the provider-specific location identified above. If your host has a dedicated Sandbox or Settings editor, use that instead of creating a competing file. - Locate or add the sandbox section. The setting belongs under
[SandboxSettings]. A community configuration example uses that section and the line below. Some community snippets report that a missing section header causes the file to be ignored; because that behavior is not confirmed by official documentation, adding the header is a sensible compatibility check. - Enter a plain numeric value:
ItemStackSizeMultiplier=2.0. Keep the spelling, capitalization, equals sign, and decimal format. Do not add quotation marks or a percent sign. - Save as ordinary text. Preserve the
.iniextension. Avoid saving an editor-created filename such asSandboxSettings.ini.txt. - Start the server. Allow the startup and world load to finish before joining. A host panel may rewrite the file during this step; if it does, make the change through that panel or follow its documented import method.
- Test the result in-game. Place enough of a stackable item into one inventory slot to exceed the normal limit, then split, move, and reconnect to confirm the quantity persists.
A minimal file can look like this:

ItemStackSizeMultiplier=2.0Do not remove unrelated sandbox lines that your world already uses. Editing only the multiplier reduces the chance of unintentionally changing harvest, enemy, construction, or progression settings.
Choose a sensible value

These numbers are multipliers, not promises that every item will display exactly two, ten, or thirty times its previous cap. The item’s own stacking rule can determine the final result. Increase in small steps, test with your group, and keep the backup so you can return to the prior value.

Can you change an existing world?
There is no single answer across installations. Different community guides describe different implementations:
- World-embedded settings: XGamingServer says sandbox settings can be established when a world is created and stored in the save data. Its guidance says there may be no automatically generated INI and suggests creating one and loading it with the
-SandboxIniPathlaunch parameter. - Global, autosaved settings: BisectHosting describes sandbox settings as global and autosaved, implying that its panel or configuration can apply them without recreating the world.
- Provider-managed settings: Wabbanode exposes a Settings tab, so the panel—not a manually uploaded file—may be the supported way to apply the change.
Because these behaviors conflict, do not delete or regenerate a live world to force the setting. First apply the change to a disposable test world, or ask your provider which mechanism its current server image uses. If the host requires -SandboxIniPath, confirm the complete path and exact launch-parameter syntax in that host’s instructions; the parameter alone does not identify a file.

Verify that the server loaded the new setting
- After startup, check the panel’s file editor or FTP timestamp to see whether the server rewrote the INI.
- Join the same world named in the edited directory. A successful edit to another world will appear to do nothing.
- Use a stackable item and fill one slot beyond its normal cap. Test splitting the stack and moving it between player and container inventories.
- Disconnect and reconnect. If the quantity reverts only after reconnecting, the setting may not have been loaded by the world or the host may be validating it on save.
- Ask another player to test if the issue affects only one client. The setting is server-side, so a client-only configuration change is not a substitute.
Troubleshooting when stacks do not increase
The file keeps reverting
The usual cause is an edit made while the server was running, followed by an automatic save of the old configuration. Stop the server, edit the file, save it, and then start it. If the host still rewrites the value, use its Settings tab or configuration generator rather than FTP.
Nothing changes after a restart
- Confirm that the line is exactly
ItemStackSizeMultiplier=2.0(or your chosen value), with no quotes or stray characters. - Check that
[SandboxSettings]appears as its own section header. - Verify the file is in the active world directory, not a template, backup, or another world.
- Check whether your provider expects the Windows Server configuration path instead of the per-world path.
- Look for a panel setting that overwrites manual edits during startup.
- If the world stores settings internally, follow the provider’s
-SandboxIniPathor world-creation procedure.
The server fails to start or the file is ignored
Restore the backup immediately, then start the server with the last known-good configuration. Re-enter only the multiplier line using a value between 1.0 and 30.0. Check for a hidden .txt extension, malformed section brackets, duplicate multiplier lines, or an accidental change to unrelated settings. If the host’s editor validates values, make the change there and let it generate the file.
Only some items stack differently
That can be normal. The multiplier increases the allowed stack size subject to each item’s own rules; it is not evidence by itself that the server failed. Test more than one stackable item and compare behavior after reconnecting.
The setting works in a new world but not the old one
This points to host-specific world storage. Keep the old save, create a test world with the same value, and ask the provider whether the existing world must be reloaded with -SandboxIniPath or updated through its panel. Do not overwrite the original world until the procedure is confirmed.
Rollback and safe multiplayer practice
To return to normal, stop the server and set ItemStackSizeMultiplier=1.0, then save and restart. If you need to undo more than the multiplier, restore the backed-up INI and world copy rather than guessing at previous values. Tell players when the change will occur: changing stack limits can alter how many slots a container, player inventory, or dropped item uses, and a restart is required for everyone to receive the same server configuration.
