Connect your controller, confirm Windows detects it, then select and configure an input device in your emulator. Map the N64 buttons and analog stick, and check movement, camera control, aiming, and other mapped actions in Banjo-Tooie. The exact menu labels and best input plugin vary by emulator, plugin version, controller, and adapter.
Choose an emulator and controller connection
Project64 is a Windows-focused option; its documentation lists Windows 10 and 11 requirements. The Banjo-Tooie Archipelago guide also includes setup instructions for Project64 and BizHawk. Menus and available input plugins can differ by installed version, so follow the labels shown in your emulator.

You can use an original wired N64 controller with a compatible N64-to-USB adapter, a USB N64-style controller, or another gamepad that the PC recognizes and the emulator can map. An original controller needs an adapter; a USB controller connects directly, but neither device type is guaranteed to work with every emulator or plugin. Check the adapter maker’s documentation for your exact model and software.
Connect the controller and confirm PC detection
- Connect the controller directly if it is USB, or connect the original wired controller through its adapter.
- Check that Windows recognizes the device before opening the emulator. If the controller is not detected by the PC, resolve that connection or driver issue first; emulator remapping cannot make an unrecognized device available.
- Open the emulator’s controller or input configuration and select the detected device. Exact names and paths depend on the emulator and input plugin.
Map the controller in Project64
In Project64’s input settings, select the controller device and assign each N64 control to the corresponding physical button. Start with Project64’s own input plugin. Project64 support documentation describes the choice as “Project64 input, or N-Rage input plugin (depending on your controller/needs)” and recommends trying another plugin if one does not work.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch, PC via USB
- Connector type: micro usb
- Open Project64’s controller or input configuration. The specific menu path and labels vary by version.
- Select the intended controller and map the N64 buttons to the physical buttons you want to use.
- Assign the analog stick to analog axes where possible, rather than mapping its directions as a digital hat. Confirm that each axis moves the expected direction.
- If the controller is missing or its mappings fail with Project64’s input plugin, switch to N-Rage and configure the device again. The Banjo-Tooie Archipelago guide gives the same advice for Project64 setup problems; it is troubleshooting guidance, not a universal requirement.
For adapter-specific support, Raphnet’s documentation describes direct-access plugins for Project64 and Mupen64Plus. Check its current instructions for the exact adapter and software version rather than assuming an adapter works with every emulator.
Configure BizHawk for Banjo-Tooie
The Banjo-Tooie Archipelago guide says to put directional input on BizHawk’s Analog tab. It also warns that four digital bindings can interfere with aiming:
Rank #2
- The N64 Controller Adapter allows you to connect up to two N64 Controllers to your Switch/Switch 2 System or PC Windows.
- With two N64 Controller Adapters, up to four N64 controllers can be used at the same time.
- Supports PC Xinput and Dinput.
- Supports Turbo, Auto Fire, Hold functions. The Left Stick and D-Pad can be switched. The button A and B can be switched.
- P1 A Up
- P1 A Down
- P1 A Left
- P1 A Right
If those bindings are assigned, disable them and set directional input through the Analog tab instead. This is guidance from the game-specific Archipelago setup, not a requirement established for every Banjo-Tooie setup or emulator.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTest your mappings in the game
Once configured, check the controls in Banjo-Tooie rather than relying only on a button-binding screen. Try walking in several directions, turning and aiming with the stick, and using each mapped button. If an axis is reversed or movement feels unsuitable, return to the input settings and correct the axis assignment or dead zone if that option is available.
Rank #3
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch, PC and Mac via USB
- Features a controller port and compatibility switch
- Compatible with standard N64 controller models
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect input
The emulator does not see the controller
- Confirm the PC detects the controller or adapter first.
- In the emulator, select the right device and input plugin.
- In Project64, try N-Rage if the Project64 input plugin does not detect the controller or accept its mappings.
- If the controller is adapter-connected, check the maker’s compatibility instructions for your model and emulator.
Buttons work, but analog movement or aiming does not
Recheck the analog-axis assignments and make sure the stick is configured as analog input where possible. In BizHawk, disable the conflicting “P1 A” directional bindings listed above and configure directional input on the Analog tab, following the Archipelago guide.
An adapter works in one emulator but not another
Compatibility can depend on the adapter, emulator, plugin, and software version. Raphnet documents direct-access plugins for Project64 and Mupen64Plus, but that does not establish support for every adapter or setup. Consult the current documentation for your specific hardware.

Input problems persist
Project64 support recommends keeping Windows and drivers current, using a current stable or nightly build, checking the game dump, and trying another input plugin. Apply the relevant steps to your setup rather than treating a plugin change as a guaranteed fix.
