Compare the full cost of repair, the item’s likely remaining useful life, and the cost and reliability of a replacement that actually meets your needs. First check for a recall or warranty remedy; then assess whether repair or an upgrade is practical and safe.
Start with the item, the fault, and your options
Before comparing prices, identify the exact product, its age, what has failed, and whether it remains safe and useful. A repair may be worthwhile when the rest of the item is in good condition. It is less compelling if several parts are failing or the product has reliability problems that make another breakdown likely.

There is no universal lifespan for consumer products, and a rule that fits one category may not fit another. The FTC recommends researching a product’s expected lifespan, likely failures, and how difficult it is to fix before buying. See the FTC’s right-to-repair guidance.

Look for a recall or a free repair, replacement, or refund remedy before authorizing paid work. Then read the warranty for what is covered, how to make a claim, and whether labor, shipping, or other fees apply. The remedy may be repair, replacement, or a refund, depending on the warranty and circumstances. The FTC’s warranty guidance explains what to check.

In the United States, the FTC says a manufacturer generally cannot make warranty coverage conditional on using a specified part or service unless it provides that part or service for free, or the FTC grants a waiver. This does not mean every repair restriction is unlawful in every situation: the warranty, product, and facts matter. In a 2024 warning announcement, FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said, “These warning letters put companies on notice that restricting consumers’ right to repair violates the law.” Read that statement in the context of the announcement, not as a blanket ruling on every repair dispute. Calculate the full cost of repair
Do not compare a repair estimate with a replacement’s sticker price until you know what the estimate includes. Where practical, get a written diagnosis and account for:

- Diagnostic fees, parts, labor, and any minimum service charge.
- Shipping, transport, installation, or pickup costs.
- Whether the repair is likely to lead to additional work or repeat repairs.
- How long the repair will take and whether parts are actually available.
For a DIY repair, include the realistic cost of parts, tools, and instructions. A tool such as a precision screwdriver kit may suit some small-device jobs, but owning a tool does not make every repair appropriate. Attempt DIY only when the task is within your skill level, reliable instructions and parts are available, and the work is safe.
Compare repair with a suitable replacement
Compare the total repair cost and expected remaining usefulness with the price of a replacement that meets your needs—not automatically the newest or most expensive model. Consider the product’s age and condition, known reliability, required features, performance, and energy or other operating costs where relevant. A new product is not automatically cheaper to own, and a repair is not automatically good value just because it costs less up front.

Consumer Reports’ repair-or-replace tool considers product age, repair cost, new-product cost, depreciation, and survey data. Its appliance guidance and decision tool are product-specific; do not assume that appliance advice or reliability information applies unchanged to phones, computers, clothing, or other categories. Consumer Reports also publishes repair-or-replace resources.
There is no established cross-category repair-versus-replacement percentage in these sources. Consumer Reports’ approach uses product-specific inputs, while FTC guidance emphasizes expected life, likely failures, and repair difficulty. A percentage threshold should not replace those checks.

Decide whether an upgrade is a real alternative
Treat an upgrade as a separate option, not as an automatic compromise between repair and replacement. If a repair or modular upgrade would restore the feature you need, compare its total cost with replacing the whole product. Check compatibility, parts availability, support, and whether the change addresses the problem. The right answer depends on the particular product and your needs; there is no universal upgrade rule.
Compare the three paths

Decide whether an extended service plan is worth it
An extended service contract is a separate purchase from the warranty included with a product. Compare its added cost, covered failures, exclusions, fees, claim process, and duration with the protection already included and the amount you could set aside for repairs. The FTC notes that an extended plan may not be worth its cost when a product is unlikely to need repairs. See FTC guidance on extended warranties and service contracts.

Use your priorities to make the final call
After checking coverage and gathering realistic costs, weigh the options against what matters to you: useful life, reliability, convenience, operating costs, and whether the current product still does its job. Some people also value keeping a familiar item or avoiding waste; treat those as personal priorities rather than assuming a quantified environmental benefit for a specific repair.
In Consumer Reports’ nationally representative survey of 2,154 U.S. adults conducted in summer 2024, seven in ten respondents considered repair cost and 43% considered whether they could repair an item themselves.
