Start by asking which actions feel difficult and what the person wants to change. Then try one built-in iPhone accessibility feature at a time under Settings > Accessibility. Touch Accommodations can change how taps and swipes register; AssistiveTouch offers onscreen alternatives to gestures and button presses; and speech, keyboard, or pointer input may help with particular tasks. There is no single setup that suits everyone, and these features are interaction options—not treatments or condition-specific prescriptions.
Start with the person’s everyday difficulties
Parkinson’s and arthritis do not affect everyone’s phone use in the same way. Apple describes relevant interaction needs as “hand tremors, dexterity, or fine motor control,” rather than prescribing settings for a diagnosis. Ask which specific actions are frustrating or uncomfortable: accidental taps, holding a finger on the screen, swiping, multi-finger gestures, pressing physical buttons, or typing. Keep familiar apps and routines unless the person wants to change them.

Apple says, “If you have difficulties with hand tremors, dexterity, or fine motor control, you can adjust how the iPhone touchscreen responds to tap, swipe, and touch-and-hold gestures.” The controls are in Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Touch Accommodations. Apple’s guide, Adjust how iPhone responds to your touch, includes a setup assistant and options such as Hold Duration and Tap Assistance.
#1 Best Overall

These options change what the phone recognizes as an intentional touch. For example, Tap Assistance can ignore taps and swipes within its configured duration; Hold Duration affects how long a touch must be held, and Swipe Gestures can be configured with Hold Duration. A change that filters accidental contact may also make a deliberate tap or swipe feel slower or fail to register as expected. Try the controls with the person using familiar tasks, then adjust, recalibrate, or reset them if the result is not comfortable.
If gestures or physical buttons are hard to use
Try Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch. AssistiveTouch can put common actions in an onscreen menu, assign actions to menu-button taps or presses, and create custom gestures. It also supports pointer input, including compatible Bluetooth and USB devices such as a mouse, trackpad, or game controller; Apple also describes use with compatible adaptive accessories such as a joystick. See Use AssistiveTouch on iPhone.

- 『Better Than Finger』- A stylus has a better touch point than the tip of your finger giving better accuracy to little touch focuses like keys on the console. No more big finger troubles.
- 『Anti-Scratch Tip』- The stylus pen tip was made of soft, and scratch resistant rubber, which can protect your screen from scratching and keep no fingerprints.
- 『Easy To Carry』- Slim body and lightweight. Clip design is great for clipping in your pocket, diary, etc. Great stylus for kids.
- 『Perfect For Sharing』- Get 10 of tablet stylus with an unbeatable price. You can share this tablet pen to your friends or family.
- 『Universal Capacitive Stylus』- 100% compatible with all capacitive touch screen devices, such as iPad,iPhone, tablets, samsung galaxy and so on.
AssistiveTouch is an alternative for particular actions, not necessarily a replacement for every gesture. The menu and accessory choice should make the tasks the person actually does easier. A particular pointer or adaptive accessory still needs to be compatible with their iPhone.
If touch input is uncomfortable or typing is difficult
Speech and other input methods can help with different tasks. Apple’s mobility overview lists Voice Control, Siri, and Dictation, along with Switch Control, keyboards, and Bluetooth accessories. Voice Control can provide spoken interaction, Siri can handle supported requests, and Dictation can enter text by speech; they are not interchangeable, so try the one that fits the task. If typing on glass is uncomfortable, an external keyboard may be worth trying. Apple lists keyboards and Bluetooth accessories as alternate inputs, but verify compatibility with the specific iPhone and let the person judge whether the keyboard is comfortable before buying one.
Adjust related touch behavior only when it causes trouble
Apple also documents controls for Haptic Touch duration, Tap to Wake, and Shake to Undo in its touch-response guide. These are not necessary changes for everyone. For instance, turning off Shake to Undo may be useful if the person unintentionally shakes the phone and finds the undo prompt disruptive; leave it alone if it is not a problem.

Consider Assistive Access only if a simpler interface is wanted
Assistive Access offers a different, more focused iPhone experience with larger onscreen items and simplified navigation. Apple describes it as designed for people with cognitive disabilities, so Parkinson’s or arthritis alone is not a reason to enable it. It may be appropriate if the person specifically wants fewer choices or a simpler interface.
Setup involves choosing a Rows or Grid layout, selecting apps, and setting an Assistive Access passcode. Apple warns that if no recovery Apple Account is configured and that passcode is forgotten, the iPhone must be reset. Review Apple’s Set up Assistive Access on iPhone before choosing it.

Make changes gradually and keep what works
- Choose one task. Ask the person whether the main goal is fewer accidental touches, easier swiping, simpler button access, or more comfortable text entry.
- Try the closest matching option. Use Touch Accommodations for touch recognition, AssistiveTouch for gestures or buttons, or speech and alternate input for specific tasks.
- Test it in familiar use. Have the person try the setting with the apps and actions they use every day, not just in the settings menu.
- Keep, adjust, or undo the change. Ask what improved and what became harder. Touch Accommodations can be adjusted or recalibrated, so setup can change as preferences do.
Apple’s documentation describes device features, not clinical outcomes or a proven best configuration for everyone with Parkinson’s or arthritis. The useful setup is the one the person chooses after trying it.
