If Chrome on Android fills a password without asking for your fingerprint, turn on Verify it’s you when filling sensitive info in Chrome’s Autofill settings. Payment cards use a separate verification switch, and Chrome may use your device’s screen lock instead of a fingerprint when biometrics are unavailable.
First identify what Chrome is filling
Chrome has separate verification controls for sensitive information such as passwords and for payment methods. Check the matching setting rather than assuming one switch controls both.

- Passwords and other sensitive information: use the sensitive-info verification setting.
- Saved payment cards: use the payment-method verification setting.
Turn on verification for passwords and sensitive information
- Open Chrome on your Android device and tap More (the three-dot menu).
- Tap Settings > Passwords and Autofill > Autofill settings.
- Turn on Verify it’s you when filling sensitive info.
- Try autofilling again. Google says additional re-authentication is on by default unless it has been turned off; when this setting is off, Chrome does not show biometric or screen-lock authentication for sensitive-info autofill. Google’s Chrome Help instructions describe the setting.
Check the separate setting for payment cards
- In Chrome, tap More > Settings > Payment methods.
- Turn on Verify it’s you to autofill payment methods.
- Test card autofill. When a card is entered for the first time, Chrome still requires its security code to be typed manually; after that, fingerprint or device-lock verification can be used. See Google’s Android autofill instructions.
Know what authentication to expect
A fingerprint prompt is not guaranteed in every situation. Chrome can use the device’s default screen lock—such as a passcode or password—when biometric authentication is unavailable. Check whether your device lock is configured and working; the verification request may appear as a screen-lock challenge rather than a fingerprint prompt.

Confirm which autofill service Chrome is using
Chrome can source saved information from Google Password Manager or from a third-party autofill service. If you expect a credential held by one service but Chrome is using another, the expected saved data or prompt behavior may differ.

- Open Chrome > More > Settings > Autofill services.
- Select the provider that contains the credentials you want to use.
- Restart Chrome after changing the provider.
Google documents that Chrome uses data from the selected third-party provider and that Chrome must be restarted after a provider change. Its October 24, 2024 announcement describes native third-party autofill support on Android in the Chrome 131 era. Google’s documentation does not compare the security features of individual providers or endorse a particular password manager.
If autofill suggestions are missing too
A missing verification prompt and missing autofill suggestions are different symptoms. If Chrome does not offer saved information at all, check whether the relevant information is saved and whether Save and fill is enabled. Suggestions may also be absent because Chrome considers a site insufficiently secure or cannot detect a form field. Those issues do not, by themselves, explain why verification is not appearing when autofill does work.

If the verification setting is already on
If the matching setting is enabled and the device has a screen lock, the available Google guidance does not establish one universal fix for every Android device and Chrome version. Note your Android and Chrome versions, which field is affected, the selected autofill provider, and the exact setting labels you see. Those details help distinguish a password, card, provider, or device-specific issue without assuming a hardware fault.
