Start with trusted Wi-Fi and your Apple Account credentials, choose whether to transfer old data or start fresh, then secure the device with a strong passcode or password. After setup, confirm two-factor authentication, turn on Find My, and install available updates. These built-in Apple protections cover the essentials; paid security software is not required for this checklist.
Before you turn on your new device
Use a trusted Wi-Fi network and have its password and Apple Account sign-in details ready. Decide how you want to handle existing data before Setup Assistant begins; you can choose a clean start where migration is offered, and Apple says a Mac can also be set up as new and migrated later.

- For iPad: Keep your old iPad or a backup accessible if you plan to transfer. During initial setup, Apple offers nearby-device setup, backup restoration, manual setup, and Android migration with Move to iOS. Quick Start can copy settings and preferences, and supported devices can transfer wirelessly. Apple’s iPad setup guide describes the available paths.
- For MacBook: Connect to the internet; parts of Setup Assistant may require it, and an update may be required during first setup. You can transfer from another Mac, a Time Machine backup, a Windows PC, a startup disk, or an eligible nearby iPhone or iPad. See Apple’s Mac setup guide for the current options.
If you plan to set up a Mac using an iPhone or iPad, Apple’s listed minimums are macOS Sequoia 15.4 and iOS or iPadOS 18.4, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled. Requirements can change, so check Apple’s current guidance for your hardware before choosing this route: Set up your Mac with iPhone or iPad.

Should you transfer everything or start fresh?
Transfer when you need your apps, settings, files, or preferences and have a suitable device or backup. It is usually the most convenient route, but it also carries forward settings and apps you may no longer need. Start fresh if you prefer to choose what comes over, or if you do not have a useful migration source. Apple supports both approaches; neither is a universal security requirement.

For a school- or employer-owned iPad or MacBook, follow the organization’s enrollment instructions. Management can control setup choices and security settings; ask the organization’s administrator for the process that applies to that device.
Set a strong device passcode or Mac password
On iPad
Set a passcode during setup. Choose a longer code you can reliably enter rather than an easy-to-guess combination. Apple says the iPad passcode automatically enables Data Protection, which helps protect the device’s data. Apple Platform Security explains how passcodes contribute to encryption-key protection.

On MacBook
Create a unique password for your local Mac user account. It should be difficult for someone else to guess and practical for you to enter. Apple says macOS uses FileVault for volume encryption; Macs with Apple silicon also use Data Protection. Apple’s platform security guide describes these protections.

Use biometrics if your model supports them
Enable Face ID or Touch ID when offered. Biometrics make routine unlocking more convenient, but they do not replace the underlying passcode or password. Availability depends on the iPad or MacBook model. Apple’s Face ID and Touch ID setup guidance explains the options.

Use your own Apple Account and confirm two-factor authentication
Sign in with the Apple Account you intend to use personally. Do not share one account among family members; Apple’s Family Sharing feature is intended for sharing eligible purchases and services while people retain separate accounts. If someone else helped create or configure your account, change its password so only you know it.
After setup, open Settings on iPad or System Settings on Mac, select your name, then open Sign-In & Security. Confirm that two-factor authentication is enabled. Apple says most accounts already use it; a new sign-in uses the account password plus a six-digit verification code. See Apple’s two-factor authentication guide.

Protect account recovery details as carefully as the password. Apple’s advice is explicit: “Never give your Apple Account password, verification codes, device passcode, recovery key or any account security details to anyone else. Apple will never ask you for this information.” Review your recovery contacts or other recovery settings and keep contact information current. A recovery key can provide another recovery route, but you are responsible for storing it and retaining access to it; consider that obligation before enabling one. Apple’s account security guidance covers these safeguards.
Turn on Find My to protect a lost device
Enable Find My for the iPad or MacBook and leave it on. Apple says Find My automatically enables Activation Lock on iPad and on Macs with Apple silicon or the T2 Security Chip running macOS Catalina or later. Activation Lock can help deter another person from reactivating a supported lost device. If a device goes missing, use Lost Mode promptly. Apple explains the feature and loss response in its Activation Lock guide.

Install software updates after setup
Check for available iPadOS or macOS updates once the initial setup is complete, and enable automatic updates if that suits your workflow. Apple says software releases include bug fixes and critical security updates. Find update controls in Settings → General → Software Update on iPad, or System Settings → General → Software Update on Mac. Keep the device connected to power and a reliable network while an update installs.
Optional: add physical security keys for higher-risk accounts
Most people can use Apple Account two-factor authentication without buying anything extra. If you face targeted phishing or account-takeover risks, FIDO-certified security keys are an optional advanced layer. Apple requires at least two compatible keys for this feature; keep them safely and maintain access to them. If you lose all trusted devices and keys, you may be unable to access the account. Check current device, software, certification, and availability requirements before choosing keys. Apple’s Security Keys for Apple Account guide explains setup and recovery considerations.
Recognize suspicious setup and support requests
Ignore unsolicited support calls and suspicious messages or links that ask for your password, verification code, device passcode, or recovery key. Do not hand these details to a caller or enter them after following an unexpected link. Use Apple’s official support channels if you need account help.
