Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo set up an iOS Simulator, install a compatible version of Xcode on a Mac, select the app’s scheme, install the needed iOS simulator runtime if it is missing, and choose or create a simulated iPhone as the run destination. Then select Product > Run to build and launch the app. The available devices depend on the selected scheme and installed platform support; use a physical iPhone for checks that depend on real hardware or performance.
Before you start: check Xcode and macOS compatibility
Apple’s simulator workflow runs in Xcode on a Mac. The compatible macOS versions and simulator operating systems vary by Xcode release, so check the row for your installed release in Apple’s Xcode system requirements rather than relying on a remembered version pairing.

Xcode installs platform support and simulator runtimes as components, so you can add the ones your project needs. There is no single documented storage requirement for Xcode plus every runtime and device configuration: check Xcode’s Components settings for installed components and recoverable storage.
Install the iOS runtime and choose a simulator
- Install and open Xcode. Use a release compatible with your Mac’s macOS and the simulator OS your project targets.
- Open the project and select its app scheme. The scheme determines which run destinations Xcode offers. Choose one that includes the app target you intend to run.
- Install missing iOS support if prompted. If the desired destination is unavailable, select its Get button. You can also open Xcode > Settings > Components and download the needed platform support or simulator runtime. Apple also documents downloading components through
xcodebuild. - Choose a simulated iPhone. Open the run-destination menu and select a device configuration with an installed runtime.
- Build and launch the app. Click the Run button or choose Product > Run. Xcode builds the selected scheme and opens the app in Simulator.
Create a custom simulated device
If the run-destination menu does not include the model and OS combination you want, add a simulator in Device Hub:

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Open Device Hub from Manage Devices or choose Xcode > Open Developer Tool > Device Hub.
- Choose Add Device.
- Select the simulator OS version and device model. Download the runtime first if it is not available.
- Optionally enter a name for the simulator, then create it.
- Return to the project’s run-destination menu, select the new device, and run the app.
Apple’s running-app documentation covers run destinations and simulated devices; its Device Hub guide explains adding simulator configurations.
Why an iPhone simulator may be missing
Check these in order if a destination is absent:
- Confirm the scheme. A scheme for a different target or platform may not offer the iOS app destination you expect.
- Check platform support. If the required platform component is not installed, Xcode may not be able to build and run for that target.
- Check the simulator runtime. Install it from the destination’s Get prompt or Xcode > Settings > Components.
- Check compatibility. Verify the installed Xcode release supports your host macOS and the requested simulator OS in Apple’s requirements table.
If the build itself fails, inspect Xcode’s activity area or open View > Navigators > Issues with Command-5 to find the reported error or warning.

Simulator or physical iPhone?
| Test environment | Useful for | Limits and setup |
|---|---|---|
| Simulator | Running and debugging an app across available simulated device models and OS versions. | Choices depend on the active scheme and installed runtimes. A simulator does not reproduce all physical-device performance or hardware-specific behavior. |
| Physical iPhone | Validating behavior that depends on actual device hardware or performance. | Connecting a device can add pairing, account, signing, or provisioning steps. Signing and provisioning are not required simply to launch an app in a simulator. |
Apple cautions that simulators “don’t replicate the performance or features of a physical device.” Use a suitable physical iPhone when a test depends on hardware or real-device performance; simulator results alone cannot establish those behaviors.

Do I need an iPhone to use iOS Simulator?
No. You can run an app in Simulator on a Mac without connecting an iPhone. A physical device is needed for tests that rely on actual hardware or device performance.
Does running an app in Simulator require device signing and provisioning?
Not just to launch an app in a simulator. Those steps can be part of selecting and running on a physical device.
