How to Set Up an FFmpeg YouTube Livestream on JioFiber

Use YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint and a private stream key, then choose FFmpeg bitrate and keyframes based on sustained upload from your JioFiber connection.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To livestream with FFmpeg over JioFiber, create a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, copy that broadcast’s current RTMPS address and stream key, and set FFmpeg’s video bitrate below the sustained upload speed measured on the computer and connection you will stream from. Jio advertises symmetric upload and download speeds on its plans, but the advertised rate does not guarantee the upload available to YouTube at your location and time.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live and a broadcast created or scheduled in Live Control Room.
  • FFmpeg installed on the computer that will send the stream.
  • A source: this guide’s command uses a local video file. Camera, capture-card, and desktop inputs need device-specific FFmpeg arguments.
  • A stable internet connection. Measure sustained upload from the actual streaming computer and location; do not choose a bitrate from the JioFiber plan headline alone.

The setup and settings below follow YouTube’s encoder guidance checked in 2026 and Jio’s published plan information retrieved in 2026. The example command is a template, not a tested configuration for every FFmpeg build, JioFiber plan, or YouTube ingest endpoint.

1. Create the YouTube broadcast and get its stream details

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast.
  2. Copy the ingest address and stream key shown for that specific stream. Use the current values rather than an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes ingestion information as part of the stream’s CDN settings.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your broadcast. Do not include a real key in a public script, screenshot, or command example.

For a standard stream, YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Use the complete RTMPS address supplied for the broadcast; the host and path can vary. Google’s RTMPS guidance specifies port 443 and a valid hostname and path.

2. Check the upload available on your JioFiber connection

Understand plan speed versus stream capacity

Jio describes its postpaid plans as symmetric, meaning upload speed equals download speed. Its plan comparison page retrieved in 2026 showed examples of 30/30 Mbps, 100/100 Mbps, and 150/150 Mbps upload/download, with 30-day validity and unlimited data; displayed prices are plus GST. These are examples, not a guarantee that every subscriber can buy those exact offers. Plan availability and terms can vary by region. Check Jio’s current JioFiber plan comparison for your address and plan.

Jio’s terms say speeds are guaranteed up to the ISP node and that a contention ratio applies. That means the plan rate and a single short speed test do not establish sustained end-to-end throughput to YouTube. Measure from the computer and connection you will actually use, ideally around the time you plan to stream. Repeat the test or observe upload over a sustained interval. If results vary, plan around the lowest sustained result you observe.

Leave headroom

Keep the total outgoing stream rate comfortably below that observed sustained upload. Allow for audio and transport overhead as well as network variation. There is no published universal safety percentage for JioFiber-to-YouTube streaming, so do not treat any fixed upload-to-bitrate ratio as guaranteed. If upload fluctuates or is marginal, lower the video bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then retest.

3. Choose YouTube-compatible FFmpeg settings

Recommended H.264 starting point

YouTube’s encoder guidance checked in 2026 recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (never over four seconds), frame rates up to 60 fps, and RTMPS for encrypted transport. For a straightforward FFmpeg setup, H.264 video with AAC audio is a widely supported starting combination. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, but their bitrate ranges differ from H.264. Do not apply H.264 values to those codecs.

H.264 output YouTube-recommended video bitrate Keyframe interval at that frame rate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps About 2 seconds: 60 frames at 30 fps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps About 2 seconds: 120 frames at 60 fps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps About 2 seconds: 60 frames at 30 fps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps About 2 seconds: 120 frames at 60 fps

These are YouTube’s H.264 ingest recommendations, not a promise of uninterrupted delivery or a particular viewer-side quality. Select a row only if the measured upload can sustain the video rate plus audio and overhead with room for variation. If it cannot, lower the output settings rather than relying on the plan’s advertised maximum.

Why keyframes matter

At 30 fps, a two-second group of pictures (GOP) is 60 frames; at 60 fps, it is 120. YouTube’s API documentation warns that keyframes spaced more than four seconds apart can cause buffering. Match the GOP to the actual output frame rate, not merely the source file’s label.

4. Start FFmpeg with a local video file

This template sends a local file as a 720p30-class H.264 stream at 4 Mbps, with AAC audio. Replace the placeholders with your input file and the complete RTMPS address and key from Live Control Room. Adjust the output to match your source, chosen frame rate, and measured sustained upload.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4M -maxrate 4M -bufsize 8M
  -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_HOST:443/APP/STREAM_KEY"
  • -re reads a file at its native rate instead of sending it faster than real time.
  • -c:v libx264 selects the H.264 encoder; -b:v and -maxrate set the target and maximum video rate, while -bufsize configures rate-control buffering.
  • -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, which is approximately two seconds at 30 fps. For 60 fps, use 120 frames for the same interval.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 encodes audio as AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Include audio only if the input has an audio stream and that is what you intend to send.
  • -f flv selects the container expected by the RTMP/RTMPS output workflow.

The sample’s 4 Mbps video rate is YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 240p–720p at 30 fps, not a claim that it will work on every connection. FFmpeg options available can depend on your build. The FFmpeg documentation describes rate-control options including maxrate and bufsize.

If the source file already uses suitable codecs, stream copy may avoid re-encoding, but first verify its video and audio codecs, frame rate, keyframe spacing, and whether the output meets YouTube’s requirements. Do not assume the command above can be used unchanged for a camera, capture card, or desktop capture; those inputs require operating-system- and device-specific options.

Protect the stream key when using a command line. Depending on the system, shell history or process listings can expose command arguments. Use a protected environment or other secret-handling method when practical, and never share a command containing the real key.

5. Verify the stream before going live

  1. Run FFmpeg and check that it is sending frames in real time rather than falling behind.
  2. Open the broadcast preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that both video and audio appear and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming signal.
  3. Only after the preview and health status look right, click “Go Live” if required for your broadcast, or share the stream link.

YouTube’s API health fields include conditions such as videoBitrateLow, framerateMismatch, and noAudioStream. Treat the health report and preview as checks of the incoming stream, not as a substitute for confirming that your content is ready and authorized to broadcast.

6. Troubleshoot common connection and stream problems

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
FFmpeg cannot connect, or reports SSL errors or timeouts Confirm the address is the current RTMPS endpoint for this broadcast, including the exact hostname and path, and that it uses port 443. Check for copying errors in the stream key. Google notes that incorrect server names, ports, or TLS setup can cause connection errors.
Stream connects but buffers or shows low bitrate Compare FFmpeg’s outgoing rate with sustained upload measured from the streaming computer. Reduce video bitrate or resolution if the upload varies or is insufficient; repeat the measurement. Check that FFmpeg keeps up with real time and that keyframes are no more than four seconds apart.
YouTube reports a frame-rate mismatch Check the output frame rate against the broadcast settings and the source. Keep the chosen frame rate consistent and set the GOP interval for that output rate.
Preview has no audio or YouTube reports noAudioStream Confirm the input actually contains the intended audio, then check that FFmpeg is selecting and encoding that stream. A video-only file will not produce audio simply because AAC options are present.
Upload tests look adequate but the stream remains unstable Test again from the actual streaming computer and location, preferably at the intended broadcast time. Jio’s symmetric plan description does not resolve local Wi-Fi coverage, router setup, congestion, or the route to YouTube. A direct wired connection is a troubleshooting option if convenient, not a documented requirement.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Technical delivery does not grant permission to broadcast the content. Before going live, make sure you have the rights needed for every video, music track, and other material in the stream, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies. Repeatedly looping material you do not own can create copyright and reused-content problems; an uninterrupted connection does not make a stream eligible for monetization. Use the copyright safety checklist as a preflight aid, not as legal advice or a guarantee that YouTube will approve content.
