1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo use an external SSD with a Steam Deck or ROG Ally, connect the handheld to a dock or hub with a data-capable USB port, plug the SSD into that port, and confirm the operating system recognizes it before setting up game storage. If you want to charge while docked, check that the dock supports USB-C Power Delivery (PD) passthrough and can supply enough power for the handheld and attached devices. The connection steps are similar; storage setup and support depend on the handheld and operating system.
Before you connect the SSD
Identify the handheld model and operating system first: Steam Deck running SteamOS, ROG Ally running Windows, or another configuration. Decide whether the SSD is for game installations, file transfer, or both. Do not assume one drive format or library workflow applies identically to SteamOS and Windows.

- Choose a dock or hub with a USB data port for the SSD. Add HDMI or Ethernet only if you need those connections.
- Check physical fit: connector direction, cable length, stand shape, and clearance around the handheld’s vents.
- If charging is important, confirm the dock supports USB-C PD passthrough and review its power-allocation guidance.
- Back up any files already on the SSD before formatting or changing its setup.
Valve says, “Most USB-C compliant hubs and docks will work without issue with Steam Deck,” while noting that compatibility can still vary. Its guidance is general dock compatibility, not certification of a particular SSD or a performance guarantee: Valve’s Steam Deck docking guidance.

- Confirm your configuration. Note the handheld model and operating system, and whether the drive is for game storage or file transfer.
- Select a data-capable dock or hub. Make sure it has a USB port that supports data, not only power. Check for any other ports you actually need.
- Check device compatibility. Match the dock’s connector and features to the handheld. For ASUS’s DG310 dock, ASUS specifies that a device needs USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery; those requirements are specific to that dock.
- Check charging support. For a Steam Deck powered through a dock, Valve says the dock or hub needs USB-C PD passthrough. Confirm the dock’s output and how it allocates power to connected devices.
- Use the right charger for the dock, if required. ASUS recommends a USB-C PD charger rated at 100W or higher to reach the DG310’s stated maximum output. That recommendation is for the DG310, not a universal requirement for docks.
- Connect the charger to the dock. Follow the dock maker’s instructions for its power input. Some docks require external power for charging or full operation.
- Connect the dock to the handheld. Check that the handheld reports the expected charging or power state. A dock can reserve some power for peripherals; Valve warns that this can result in a slow-charging warning on Steam Deck.
- Plug the SSD into a USB data port. Use a port identified for data rather than one intended only for power.
- Wait for the operating system to recognize the drive. Confirm it appears in the relevant system or storage interface before trying to use it for games.
- Prepare or select the drive in the operating system. Use the current storage controls for your device. Formatting can erase data, so preserve anything you need first. Valve’s reference to ext4 with casefolding concerns Steam Deck microSD cards; it is not a universal format instruction for external USB SSDs.
- Choose the SSD as a game location if that is your goal. Use the platform’s current launcher or storage controls to add or select the drive. Verify the destination before downloading or moving a large game.
- Test a small transfer or installation. Check that the drive remains visible and that the intended app or game can use it.
- Check the rest of the setup. Confirm charging, SSD access, and any connected display or peripherals work together as expected.
Menu names and storage workflows can change with operating-system updates. Follow the current on-device controls for your configuration rather than assuming a single SteamOS-and-Windows procedure.

What to check when choosing a dock
Dock specifications are model-specific. Compare the features that matter for your setup rather than treating one dock’s port or power figures as typical of all docks.
| Decision | What to verify |
|---|---|
| USB ports | Number and type of data-capable ports, plus whether a port is occupied by another peripheral. |
| Power | USB-C PD passthrough, output to the handheld, charger requirements, and any power reserved for attached devices. |
| Display | Whether the handheld and dock support the connection you need. Real display results depend on the handheld, dock, cable, and monitor together. |
| Ethernet | Whether wired networking is available and useful for your setup. |
| Fit and cable management | Connector position, cable length, stand design, portability, and vent clearance. |
| Storage hardware | A portable USB SSD is a self-contained option; an NVMe enclosure plus a separate drive adds a component and connection to manage. No particular SSD or enclosure is validated here. |
ASUS ROG Bulwark Dock DG310 example
ASUS lists the DG310 with one HDMI 2.1 port, three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports rated at 5 Gbps each, Gigabit Ethernet, and a USB-C power input rated up to 100W. ASUS says its device cable outputs up to 80W, recommends a 100W-or-higher USB-C PD charger for full output, and does not include a charger. Its USB-A ports are described for peripherals such as controllers, keyboards, mice, and flash drives. ASUS says the dock supports one external display; actual results depend on the device, cable, and display. See the ASUS ROG Bulwark Dock DG310 FAQ for its specifications.

What differs between Steam Deck and ROG Ally
Steam Deck
Valve describes docking as using a USB-C hub with a PC: it adds connectivity but does not improve the Deck’s performance. Valve’s Steam Deck documentation about ext4 with casefolding refers to microSD cards, not all external SSDs. Use the current SteamOS storage interface and check the drive’s recognition before assigning or moving game installations. See Valve’s SteamOS information.
ROG Ally
ASUS’s ROG Ally Series FAQ documents game storage on a UHS-II or backward-compatible microSD reader and specifies a 65W included AC adapter for the ROG Ally. That microSD guidance does not certify a specific external USB SSD; use the current Windows storage and game-launcher controls to check and select an external drive. See the ASUS ROG Ally Series FAQ.

ROG Ally running SteamOS
Valve lists Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Legion Go S as officially Powered by SteamOS. Valve also says SteamOS can be installed on additional AMD PCs, but support for device-specific issues on those systems may be limited. A ROG Ally running SteamOS therefore should not be treated as having the same official support standing as a Steam Deck. Check Valve’s SteamOS page for its current support information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What an external SSD dock can—and cannot—do
A dock can let you connect storage alongside charging, a display, networking, and other peripherals, provided the dock and handheld support the required connections. It does not make Steam Deck games run faster: Valve says the Deck runs at full performance in portable mode and docking does not improve its performance. This guidance does not establish a particular SSD’s speed, game-loading improvement, or compatibility across every dock and operating system.
