For a first Atari 2600 homebrew project, install batari Basic, compile one of its sample programs, and run the resulting binary in Stella. You do not need a physical console to get started. If you prefer a graphical workflow, Atari Dev Studio brings batari Basic, the DASM assembler, and Stella into Visual Studio Code; if you want to write 6502/6507 assembly directly, use DASM with Stella.
Choose a development workflow
The main choice is whether to begin with a higher-level language, an integrated editor, or assembly. These are documented workflow options, not a controlled comparison of speed or performance.

| Workflow | Good fit | Setup shape | What you learn or control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone batari Basic | First project or a simple compile-and-run setup | Install the compiler’s required WebAssembly runtime, install batari Basic, then compile from its Samples folder. | A BASIC-like language compiled into Atari 2600 binaries. |
| Atari Dev Studio in VS Code | Those who want editing, compiling, and emulator launching in one environment | Install the VS Code extension; its repository says it includes batari Basic, DASM, Stella, and supporting tools for Windows, Linux, and macOS. | Choose batari Basic or DASM while using an integrated editor workflow. |
| DASM and Stella | Those who want to write assembly directly | Use a text editor and DASM, then load the build in Stella. | Direct work with the 6502/6507 assembly toolchain rather than batari Basic’s higher-level language. |
For a first build, the standalone batari Basic path makes it easiest to verify the essential compiler-to-ROM step. Choose Atari Dev Studio if you would rather have an integrated editor, or assembly-first development if direct low-level control is your goal.
Set up batari Basic and compile its sample
The current batari Basic repository distributes its programs as WebAssembly, so install the wasmtime interpreter before following the compiler setup. On Windows, the repository documents this command: winget install BytecodeAlliance.Wasmtime.Portable. For macOS and Linux, use the installer linked from the wasmtime site.
#1 Best Overall
- Perfect match for the original one.
- According to the original factory specifications.
- Brand new and high quality.
- As accessory to replace the broken parts.
- Easy to install and use.
- Download and extract batari Basic. Keep the distribution’s folder structure intact; in particular, do not separate the compiler from its
includesandSamplesfolders. The README also identifiesdocsas a useful directory. - Run the platform installer. On Windows, run
install_win.batfrom the extracted distribution and follow its prompts. On macOS or Linux, open a terminal in the extracted directory and run./install_ux.sh. If the Windows installer fails, the README describes setting the batari Basic directory and adding it to your PATH. - Compile the sample. Change to the
Samplesdirectory and run2600bas sample.bas. - Check for the output. A successful compile generates
sample.bas.binin the sample directory. Open that binary in Stella to check that it launches.
This sample compile confirms that the compiler-to-ROM step works; it is not a claim that the setup has been independently tested on every operating system. Follow the batari Basic README if your platform’s installer behaves differently.
Use Atari Dev Studio for an integrated workflow
Atari Dev Studio is a Visual Studio Code extension documented for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Its repository describes support for compiling with batari Basic or DASM and launching Stella for testing. This can reduce the work of locating and connecting separate tools, though it is still worth checking the extension’s current release notes and setup instructions for your operating system.

- Easy project for beginners!
- Stronger bass frequencies and more steps than the original APC
- 3 potentiometer controls - Frequency (VR2) and Pulse Width (VR3) contour the tone while the Volume control (VR1) sets your output just right
- 2 Control Voltage (CV) inputs allows step sequencers and waveform generators to expand the sonic capabilities of the Atari Punk Console from drone to arpeggiated dynamism
- Requires a 9V battery or a 2.1-2.5mm 9V center negative power supply of at least 50mA (not included)
The repository documentation reports batari Basic v1.9-PXE-beta-45 (dated 2026-06-24, WASM), DASM 2.20.14.1 (dated 2020-11-09), and Stella 7.0 (dated 2024-10-06). These are repository-reported version details, not confirmation that each is the latest available release.

DASM is identified by Atari Dev Studio as a macro assembler supporting the MOS 6502 and 6507 families. In an assembly-first setup, write source in a text editor, assemble it with DASM, and load the resulting ROM in Stella. The workflow gives you direct access to assembly, but it does not provide batari Basic’s higher-level language.

For learning beyond a first build, Stella’s homebrew development page links to its Programmer’s Guide, tutorials by Kirk Israel and Andrew Davie, bankswitching documentation, and AtariAge beginner material. That page says it was updated January 3, 2025. These resources are especially relevant as projects encounter timing and cartridge-bank details.
Run and debug builds in Stella
Stella is an Atari 2600 emulator that supports common raw A26, BIN, and ROM formats, multiple television standards, and many bankswitching schemes. Load the compiled binary in Stella and check that it starts. When the result differs from what you expect, Stella’s built-in debugger offers static disassembly and runtime tracking of code, graphics, and data. See the Stella User’s Manual for emulator setup and debugger details.
For ordinary use, the manual recommends installing an appropriate binary package. It presents building Stella from source as an option for developers or when the binary does not work. The manual lists SDL 2.0.14 or newer among its general requirements; consult its platform-specific sections for operating-system requirements and installation steps, which can vary by version.

Decide whether you need a real console
You can begin and test in Stella without owning an Atari 2600. If you later want to try a build on physical hardware, batari Basic says its binary can be used to make a cartridge. Atari Dev Studio gives Harmony and UNO carts as examples, and Stella documents support for Harmony bankswitching.

- The Atari Punk Console is one of the most famous and recognizable Lo-Fi synth circuits ever!
- Using a single 556 dual timer IC with minimal part count, the Atari Punk Console circuit is a solid, time-tested noise generator capable of outrageous square wave madness!
- Low part count = easy build for beginners!
- 3 potentiometer controls - Pulse, Width, and Frequency.
- Powered by 9V battery connector or DC Jack.
A flash cartridge is therefore an optional hardware-testing route, not a prerequisite for developing or emulating a game. The cited documentation does not establish current product availability or compatibility between a particular cartridge revision and every ROM, so check the relevant device and ROM details before relying on a specific setup.
Licensing note for creators
The batari Basic repository says its compiler is free under GPL v2 and that this license does not apply to games created with batari Basic; it says creators may license their games as they choose. Stella’s official project site describes Stella as distributed under GPL. These statements do not determine the rights for third-party assets, libraries, or physical cartridge production.
