How does AI virtual try-on work?
A virtual try-on system takes an image of a person and an image of a garment, then synthesizes a new image in which the person appears to wear that garment. The result is a generated visualization, not a photograph of an actual fitting.

In its 2023 explanation, Google described a diffusion-based approach that processes the person and garment images through separate U-Nets and shares information between them using cross-attention. That differs from older approaches that geometrically warped a garment image and placed it over a person’s silhouette. Google’s explanation describes its own method, not every try-on system. Why a generated image can look realistic
The model generates an image intended to preserve the person’s appearance while representing the garment. Google’s 2024 description of dress try-on discusses progressive training from lower to higher image resolutions to render details such as prints and pleats, as well as a VTO-UDiT approach intended to preserve the person’s face and body. Can virtual try-on tell you what size to buy?
No—not on the basis of the generated image alone. Google says its Shopping try-on image may help show how an item might look, but “it does not determine or guarantee the actual fit of the garment.” The feature does not indicate fit, recommend a size, or show size availability. A preview can make a garment appear to sit naturally even if the selected size would be too tight or too loose in real life. A 2026 paper by researchers affiliated with the University of Washington and Google Research notes that recent virtual try-on methods have often emphasized appearance while overlooking fit accuracy. The authors describe a dataset of more than one million upper-garment try-on image triplets with body and garment measurements, intended to support research on this problem. What to use instead when choosing a size
- Compare your measurements with the retailer’s size chart, following its instructions for where and how to measure.
- Check the garment’s listed measurements, fabric, and product details for clues about stretch and construction.
- Read customer reviews for comments about sizing and how the item fits, while remembering that fit is personal.
- Review the retailer’s return policy if you are uncertain.
A flexible measuring tape can help you take measurements requested by a size chart. It cannot predict exactly how a particular fabric will drape, stretch, or feel.

How accurate is AI virtual try-on?
“Accurate” can mean two different things: whether the image resembles the garment and person, or whether the garment would physically fit that person. A tool may produce a visually convincing result without establishing the second. Google cautions that its generated image can contain errors in body shape, personal features, or clothing details. The FIT paper’s discussion of fit-aware research likewise highlights a gap between visualizing appearance and representing garments that are too large or too small.
Input quality also matters. Google says result quality depends on the shopper’s photo and the merchant’s product images. Its Merchant Center guidance recommends clear, high-resolution images showing the whole garment without obscured details. A flawed output may reflect the inputs as well as the model. Getting a more useful preview
For a personal photo, Google recommends a full-body image or selfie, good lighting, a clean background, and fitted clothing; baggy clothing may distort the result. In the United States, Google documents a selfie option that generates a digital version of the shopper. Choosing a usual clothing size is optional and is described as improving body-shape accuracy—not as guaranteeing that a garment will fit. Google Shopping Help

For Google Shopping Try-On specifically, Google says uploaded photos are used to generate the try-on look, are not used for training, are not shared with other Google products or third-party affiliates, and are not used to collect or store biometric data. How to evaluate a virtual try-on tool
Do not judge a tool’s fit guidance from one attractive image. Check what it actually uses and claims:
- Appearance fidelity: Does it preserve the garment’s color, print, silhouette, and details?
- Fit representation: Does it use body and garment measurements, and can it show a garment as too tight or too loose?
- Input requirements: Does it need a selfie, a full-body photo, measurements, or a retailer-provided model image?
- Category coverage: Which garment types and product listings are supported?
- Privacy terms: How are uploaded and generated images stored, used, reviewed, and deleted?
- Decision support: Does the service only visualize appearance, or does it separately provide size guidance based on measurements and product data?
What do Google’s try-on usage numbers measure?
Google reported in 2024 that try-on images on Search received 60% more high-quality views than other shopping images, and that shoppers used an average of four models per product when trying on clothes. These are company-reported engagement observations; they do not show that try-on predicts fit accurately or reduces returns. Google’s 2024 report
