How to Set Up an Amazon Fire TV Stick and Install Apps

Connect your Fire TV Stick, join Wi-Fi, register your Amazon account, install apps, and troubleshoot the most common setup problems.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To set up a Fire TV Stick, connect it to an HDMI port and wall power, select its HDMI input, join Wi-Fi, and register it to an Amazon account. Once the home screen appears, open Find (or press the Alexa Voice button), choose an app, and select Get or the shopping-cart icon. The exact prompts and included accessories vary by model, so follow the labels shown on your television.

What you need before setup

Have these items ready before switching on the television:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • A television with an unused HDMI port.
  • The Fire TV Stick and the accessories supplied with your model.
  • The remote and its batteries.
  • Your Wi-Fi network name and password.
  • An Amazon account, or the ability to create or access one during activation.
  • A nearby wall outlet for the Stick’s power adapter.

Amazon’s 4K Select instructions list an Alexa Voice Remote, power cable and adapter, AAA batteries, and an optional HDMI extender. Its 4K Plus instructions list the same general categories of equipment. Packaging is model-dependent, so do not assume that every Fire TV Stick includes identical accessories. Check the instructions for your specific device: Amazon 4K Select setup and Amazon 4K Plus setup.

How the connections fit together

Connection or item What it does Important qualification
HDMI Carries the Fire TV picture and sound to the television. Use an available HDMI input; an extender can help when the port is difficult to reach.
Power cable and adapter Supplies power to the Stick. For the cited 4K Select and 4K Plus setup flows, Amazon says to use the adapter and not plug the USB cable directly into the television.
Wi-Fi Connects the Stick to the internet for activation and app downloads. You need the network name and password unless you use another connection supported by your device.
Amazon account Registers the Stick and enables Appstore downloads. The on-screen flow may use a QR code or an activation code.

These requirements come from Amazon’s setup guidance for the two cited 4K models; menu wording, accessories, and prompts can differ on other Fire TV Stick versions.

Set up the Fire TV Stick step by step

1. Prepare and power the remote

  1. Open the remote’s battery compartment.
  2. Insert the supplied batteries in the direction marked inside the compartment.
  3. Leave the remote close to the television and Stick during first startup so pairing can complete without unnecessary distance.

Pairing normally occurs automatically after the batteries are inserted and the television is turned on. If it does not, use the pairing procedure in the troubleshooting section below.

2. Attach the Stick to HDMI

  1. Plug the Fire TV Stick into an available HDMI port on the television.
  2. If the Stick cannot sit comfortably because the port is recessed, crowded, or angled awkwardly, attach the optional HDMI extender supplied for your model and connect the extender to the television.
  3. Note the HDMI input number or label you used. You will need it when selecting the television source.

The extender changes the physical fit, not the setup method. Use it when it makes the connection safer or easier to access; it is not automatically required.

3. Connect power correctly

  1. Connect the Stick to its power cable.
  2. Connect the cable to the supplied power adapter.
  3. Plug the adapter into a wall outlet.

For the 4K Select and 4K Plus flows, Amazon specifically advises against plugging the USB power cable directly into the television. The wall adapter is therefore the recommended starting point for those models: 4K Select instructions and 4K Plus instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Select the correct television input

  1. Turn on the television.
  2. Use the television remote’s Input, Source, or similarly labeled control.
  3. Select the HDMI input where you connected the Stick.

If you see the television’s normal menu instead of the Fire TV welcome screen, check the HDMI number again and switch to the matching source. The Stick must have both HDMI and power connected before its startup screen can appear.

5. Connect to Wi-Fi

The initial screen offers the connection method supported by your model. You can usually scan the displayed QR code with a phone or enter the details with the Fire TV remote.

QR-code method

  1. When a Wi-Fi QR code appears, open the phone’s camera or QR-scanning feature.
  2. Scan the code shown on the television.
  3. Follow the phone’s prompt to supply or confirm the network credentials.
  4. Wait for the television to confirm that the Stick is connected.

Manual remote method

  1. Choose your Wi-Fi network from the list shown on the television.
  2. Enter the Wi-Fi password with the remote’s on-screen keyboard.
  3. Submit the password and wait for the connection confirmation.

The QR route can be quicker when a phone is available, while manual entry is useful when you prefer not to scan or the QR prompt is unavailable. The labels and order of these screens are model-dependent; use the option presented by your Stick. Amazon’s model instructions describe both approaches: 4K Select and 4K Plus.

6. Register the Stick to your Amazon account

  1. When the registration screen appears, scan its QR code with a phone, if offered.
  2. Alternatively, open the on-screen web address on a phone or computer and enter the activation code displayed on the television.
  3. Sign in with the Amazon account you want associated with the Stick.
  4. Return to the television and wait for registration to finish.

Do not close the activation page until the television confirms completion. The exact address, code format, and follow-up prompts vary by model and can change with the software version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Complete equipment-control prompts

Some setup flows ask whether the Fire TV remote should control connected equipment such as a soundbar. The 4K Plus instructions include additional on-screen prompts of this kind. Answer the questions for the equipment actually connected to the television; if no such device is present, choose the option that matches that situation. The Stick can still complete its core setup without claiming control of equipment you do not use.

  • Fire TV Ambient Experience lets you display over 2,000 pieces of museum-quality art and photography.

Download and install apps

After registration and network setup, use Fire TV’s built-in Appstore flow. Amazon summarizes the process as: “Search for apps from the main menu and then download them on your Fire TV.” The official steps are documented at Amazon’s Download Apps on Your Fire TV page.

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, open Find on the main menu.
  2. Choose the search option and enter the app’s name with the on-screen keyboard, or press the Alexa Voice button and say the app’s name.
  3. Review the search results and select the app you intend to install.
  4. Choose Get or select the shopping-cart icon, depending on the app and the interface shown.
  5. Wait for the download and installation to finish, then open the app from the confirmation screen or the home screen.

Search results and app availability can vary by region, device model, and changes made by the app publisher. If the app page asks you to verify the Amazon account, complete that verification before the download can proceed. Amazon’s support page identifies verification as a possibility for Appstore purchases, rather than a universal requirement for every free app.

When an app will not download

Check the account and payment prompts

Return to the app’s listing and look for a sign-in or verification request. Amazon’s 4K Select and 4K Plus setup guides also say that adding a default payment method may help when apps cannot be downloaded. Treat that as a troubleshooting possibility, not a requirement that applies to every free app. The relevant setup pages are 4K Select and 4K Plus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the network is still connected

A Stick that completed registration can still lose connectivity later. Before retrying an install, check whether other network-dependent screens load. If the Wi-Fi network has disappeared or the connection has dropped, follow the recovery sequence below rather than repeatedly selecting Get.

  • Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.

Check that you selected the intended listing

Voice search and short app names can return several results. Read the title on the app detail page before selecting Get or the cart icon. Do not assume that the first result is the one you want.

Fix a missing or lost Wi-Fi connection

Amazon provides a specific sequence for a network that is absent from the list or no longer connects: Wi-Fi setup troubleshooting.

  1. Press Back on the Fire TV remote to refresh the available-network list.
  2. If the network still does not appear or the connection fails, restart the Fire TV Stick by unplugging its power adapter for one minute, then plugging it back in.
  3. Restart the modem and router. Let the modem reconnect fully before restarting or reconnecting the router.
  4. Move the Stick and router closer together if that is practical.
  5. If your Fire TV model supports it and you have the required adapter, consider Ethernet as an alternative to Wi-Fi.

Ethernet is conditional: Amazon notes that some Fire TV devices need an Ethernet adapter, so it is not a universal built-in option. If the network remains unavailable after these steps, verify the Wi-Fi name and password again before assuming the Stick has failed.

Fix a remote that will not pair

Use the following order, keeping the remote within 10 feet (3 meters) of the Stick. Amazon’s full procedure is at remote pairing troubleshooting.

  5. Release the buttons, then hold Home again to start pairing.

Amazon also points to the Fire TV mobile app as an alternative control method. That option can let you navigate the setup screens while you diagnose the physical remote.

Which setup option should you choose?

Decision Choose this when Trade-off
QR-code Wi-Fi setup You have a phone ready to scan the code shown on the television. Usually reduces remote typing, but depends on the QR prompt and a working phone camera.
Manual Wi-Fi entry You want to enter the network name and password on the Fire TV screen or the QR option is not offered. Works with the remote alone, but typing a long password is slower.
QR-code account activation You can scan the registration code with a phone. Quick sign-in, provided the phone is already available and the displayed code is current.
Web address and activation code You prefer to use a browser or cannot scan the television. Requires entering the displayed address and code accurately.
Direct HDMI connection The television port is accessible and the Stick fits without strain. Keeps the installation simple, but leaves less flexibility around a crowded port.
HDMI extender The port is recessed, blocked, or places pressure on the Stick. Adds a short connection between the television and Stick; it may be optional or model-dependent.
Wi-Fi Your router provides a stable signal where the television is located. Convenient, but susceptible to a weak or missing wireless connection.
Ethernet Your particular Fire TV device supports it and you have the required adapter and cable. Provides a wired alternative, but adds hardware and is not available in the same way on every model.

These are convenience and compatibility choices, not claims that one method is faster or more reliable in every home. Amazon’s setup and troubleshooting pages describe the available alternatives for the cited devices.

A quick first-use checklist

  • The Stick is fully seated in the intended HDMI port or extender.
  • The power cable runs to the supplied adapter and a wall outlet.
  • The television is displaying the HDMI input used by the Stick.
  • The remote has correctly installed batteries and responds to the Home button.
  • The Stick is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.
  • The Amazon account registration screen has completed.
  • The app listing shows Get or the shopping-cart icon before you start the download.
  • Any requested account verification has been completed.

If one item fails, return to that stage instead of repeating later steps. For example, an app cannot finish installing while the Stick is offline, and a remote cannot be paired from the wrong television input because the pairing prompt is not visible.

What can differ between Fire TV Stick models

The cited official instructions are specifically for the 4K Select and 4K Plus. Other Fire TV Stick models may show different menu labels, ask different equipment-control questions, bundle different accessories, or present the QR and activation screens in another order. App availability and account requirements can also change over time. Use the on-screen instructions for your exact model as the authority when they differ from a general description here.

The common foundation remains the same: an HDMI connection, dedicated power, internet access, and Amazon-account registration are needed for the onboarding flow described by Amazon. The setup references are Amazon 4K Select setup and Amazon 4K Plus setup.
