You can use a spare PC to keep a prerecorded video or playlist streaming on YouTube, but the computer, encoder, power and internet connection must all stay running. The setup is: enable livestreaming on your channel, configure an encoder such as OBS with a YouTube stream key, choose settings your PC and upload connection can sustain, then test and monitor the broadcast. Before you start: check channel eligibility
In YouTube Studio, open Go Live on the channel you intend to use and confirm livestreaming is enabled. YouTube’s current general guidance requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; livestreamers must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete this check before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
YouTube currently lists a maximum of 10 concurrent active streams per channel and three per stream key. These are simultaneous-stream limits, not a promise of unlimited stream creation. Check the current eligibility and account notices in Studio, since platform rules can change.
What you need for a spare-PC stream
- A spare PC capable of encoding your chosen video continuously. The official guidance cited here does not set a minimum CPU or GPU for this workload, so test the actual machine rather than relying on a hardware floor.
- A stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for your selected bitrate.
- An encoder such as OBS Studio, plus the video file or other content source you plan to stream.
- A YouTube stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, publish it, or share it with people who should not control the stream.
An Ethernet cable is an optional way to connect the PC to a compatible router if a practical cable route is available. It may help avoid some local wireless instability, but it cannot guarantee a fix for a poor internet service or a congested network.

Set up YouTube and the encoder
- Enable the channel. In YouTube Studio, select Go Live and finish any verification or enablement steps shown there. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time access to become active.
- Install and open OBS Studio. Add the source for your prerecorded video or production. OBS is one encoder option; YouTube’s encoder workflow also applies to other compatible streaming software and hardware.
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule it. Scheduling is useful if you want to promote the broadcast and let viewers set reminders.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube if available, or enter the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private.
- Set video and output values. Choose a resolution and frame rate the PC can encode and the connection can upload reliably. Use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings as a starting point, then test under real conditions.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start streaming from OBS, confirm the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room, then go live as appropriate for the workflow displayed in Studio.
- Monitor the broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frame count, especially during the first hours and after changes to your network or settings.
Choose settings the PC and connection can sustain
Resolution and frame rate affect both image detail and the resources required to encode and upload. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include these example bitrates; they are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular PC or connection will work reliably.

These figures come from YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guide. The same guide recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the recommended keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Test upload speed and run a representative test stream with both movement and audio before relying on a setting for a long session.

Do not set bitrate equal to a best-case speed-test result and assume it will hold continuously. Choose a level the connection can sustain, and reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate if testing shows instability. The encoder also has to keep up with the selected output; a setting that works on a faster computer may overload an older spare PC.
Plan for long-running broadcasts and replays
An always-on setup can mean one continuous broadcast or a sequence of shorter sessions. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise the same archive behavior for broadcasts longer than 12 hours, so do not count on a complete YouTube replay for an uninterrupted stream that crosses that threshold.

- If a complete replay matters, plan sessions under 12 hours and verify the resulting archive in Studio.
- If you need to preserve a longer broadcast, make a separate recording plan and check that the PC has enough storage and can record reliably alongside streaming.
- For a prerecorded loop, confirm the source content plays as intended and that the audio and video remain present through a representative test.
Automatic archiving and local recording are separate concerns: neither should be treated as a substitute for checking the actual replay or recording.
Troubleshoot dropped frames and unstable output
OBS connects directly to the streaming service. Its guidance says rising dropped frames and a yellow or red connection indicator can point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help establish basic settings, but it does not remove the need to test the PC and internet connection.

- Dropped frames increase or the connection indicator turns yellow/red: lower the output bitrate and test again. Check whether the network is unstable or congested; consider a wired connection only if the PC and router support it and the cable route is practical.
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: confirm OBS is streaming to the intended YouTube destination and that the server URL and stream key match the current stream in Live Control Room. Replace a key if it may have been exposed.
- The PC struggles to encode: reduce resolution or frame rate and retest. Use the actual spare PC’s sustained performance as the guide; there is no stated universal hardware minimum for this use case.
- The stream starts but the replay is missing or incomplete: check the broadcast duration and YouTube archive status. Automatic archiving is stated for streams under 12 hours, not guaranteed for longer sessions.
