To make OBS resume streaming after a Windows restart, set Windows to launch OBS and pass it the --startstreaming launch parameter. Then configure OBS automatic reconnect separately and verify YouTube’s Live Control Room settings. These steps can restart OBS and attempt a new connection; they cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast if the PC, network, or YouTube stream setup is not ready.
What needs to recover
A restart can interrupt the broadcast at several points. Windows must start OBS, OBS must load the right profile and stream key, and the encoder must connect to YouTube. OBS’s automatic reconnect handles a dropped stream connection while OBS is running; it does not launch OBS after Windows restarts. The launch parameter handles starting a stream when OBS opens, but it does not ensure the computer has a working internet connection.
YouTube treats the stream key as a credential for sending an encoder feed to the correct stream. Keep it private. OBS’s overview describes service and stream-key setup separately from automatic reconnect: OBS Studio overview.
Prepare OBS and YouTube before automating startup
- Confirm the YouTube stream. Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the intended stream. Check its stream key and the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop controls. YouTube explains these settings at Manage live stream settings.
- Confirm OBS’s streaming configuration. In OBS, check the selected service, stream key, profile, scenes, and output settings. If you refresh the key in YouTube, update the matching setting in OBS.
- Enable reconnect in OBS. In OBS’s settings, find the Stream section and enable automatic reconnect; review its retry interval and retry limits for your needs. The exact labels can vary by OBS version. Reconnect is for restoring a connection while OBS is open, not for reopening the program after a reboot.
- Check how the YouTube event is published. Auto-start settings can let an encoder start the stream, but a scheduled stream may require you to wait for its preview and click Go live in Live Control Room. Confirm the controls for the particular stream rather than assuming every scheduled event publishes automatically. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Choose how Windows launches OBS
| Method | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Startup-folder shortcut | A simple launch when the user signs in | Easy to set up, but offers less trigger and timing control |
| Task Scheduler | More control over the trigger and launch settings | Requires the correct OBS executable path and working directory |
Option 1: Start OBS at sign-in with a Startup-folder shortcut
- Find the OBS executable, usually
obs64.exein the OBS installation folder. The exact path depends on where OBS was installed. - Create a shortcut to
obs64.exe. In the shortcut’s Target field, keep the executable path and add a space followed by--startstreamingoutside the closing quotation mark. For example:"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Use the path that exists on your PC. - Press
Win+R, entershell:startup, and press Enter. This opens the current user’s Startup folder. - Place the shortcut in that folder, then sign out and sign back in to test it. This method starts OBS in that user’s sign-in session; it does not start OBS before sign-in.
OBS documents --startstreaming and other launch parameters on its Launch Parameters page.

Option 2: Start OBS with Task Scheduler
- Open Windows Task Scheduler and choose Create Task (not necessarily the Basic Task wizard, since the full task exposes more configuration).
- On General, give the task a recognizable name. Choose whether it should run only when you are logged in or whether Windows should run it when you are not. Running without an interactive sign-in can behave differently for applications that need a desktop session; test the exact configuration.
- On Triggers, create the trigger that fits your need, such as At log on for your account. A trigger tied to sign-in does not run until that sign-in occurs.
- On Actions, select Start a program. Browse to
obs64.exe. Put--startstreamingin Add arguments. - Set Start in to the folder containing
obs64.exe, without adding the executable filename. OBS explicitly requires this working directory for scheduled-task or other automated launches: OBS launch-parameter instructions. - Save the task, then use Task Scheduler’s run command to test launching it. Confirm both that OBS opens and that the stream reaches YouTube.
Account for network and sign-in timing
After a restart, OBS may launch before the PC has reconnected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, or before the router and modem are ready. An OBS community discussion describes this as a possible cause of a failed initial connection, not a universal timing rule: OBS forum discussion about autostart after reboot.
- If the computer regularly comes online slowly, use Task Scheduler’s available delay or retry options where appropriate, then test after a real restart. Windows and network timing vary, so no single delay is reliable for every setup.
- Check whether OBS is configured to run only after sign-in. A power failure or update may bring Windows back to its sign-in screen without starting a user-session task.
- A UPS can bridge a short power interruption for equipment connected to it, but it does not restore an internet connection, configure Windows startup, or guarantee that OBS reconnects.
Test the full restart path
- Before relying on automation, test OBS’s normal stream settings and confirm the correct scene, audio, and output.
- Restart Windows under conditions representative of the failure you want to recover from. Check whether OBS launches at the intended sign-in stage and whether it starts streaming.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check for an incoming preview, stream health, and whether the event needs a separate Go live action.
- Open the channel or watch page from another device or browser session to verify that viewers can actually see the stream.
- Check OBS and YouTube again after testing. YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview and stream health, and verifying the stream is accessible; see YouTube live streaming tips. OBS also recommends testing settings in its Quick Start Guide.
Troubleshoot a stream that does not resume
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS does not open after sign-in | Startup shortcut location, task trigger, account, or executable path | Confirm the shortcut is in the intended user’s Startup folder, or inspect the task’s trigger and program path. Run the task manually to separate a launch problem from a streaming problem. |
| OBS opens but does not start streaming | Launch argument or OBS configuration | Check that --startstreaming is present as an argument after the executable path, and that the intended OBS profile and stream service are selected. |
| OBS tries to connect but YouTube receives no feed | Stream key, service selection, or internet readiness | Check the selected YouTube stream and key in Live Control Room, update OBS if the key changed, and verify that the PC has internet access. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guide covers encoder connection issues. |
| YouTube shows a preview, but viewers cannot watch | Live Control Room publishing state | Check whether the scheduled event requires Go live, and confirm the stream’s auto-start settings. |
| The stream connects but looks poor or unstable | Encoder output or outbound connection | Review OBS output settings and the quality of the PC’s outbound connection, then monitor YouTube stream health during a test. |
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos on YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera. Because it runs in the cloud, nothing has to stay on at home.
