You can get useful continuity from an AI assistant without giving it your full personal history. Start by deciding what recurring task needs continuity, share only the stable preferences or project details that help with it, and configure memory, chat history, model improvement, and temporary-chat settings as separate controls. Their effects vary by provider, account type, and workspace policy.
Choose what the assistant needs to remember
Begin with a recurring task, not a biography. Examples include remembering that you prefer concise explanations, tracking the terminology used in a work project, or tailoring recipes to a dietary preference. Save the smallest amount of stable context that makes those tasks easier.

- Prefer durable preferences and active project context over detailed personal history.
- Leave out sensitive details unless they are genuinely necessary for the task.
- Use a broad description when it works as well as a specific one; for example, a general dietary constraint may be enough without recording medical history.
- Reassess whether a fact is still useful when the task or project ends.
OpenAI warns that sensitive information can enter ChatGPT memory when users share it. A memory feature should not be treated as a safe place to store secrets or information you would not want reused in later responses.
Understand the different data controls
“Memory” is not a universal setting with one effect. An assistant may store explicit facts, draw on prior conversations, retain chat history, use conversations to improve models, or receive information through connected apps. These controls can overlap, but changing one does not necessarily change the others.

For ChatGPT, OpenAI distinguishes saved memories from chat history; custom instructions are direct guidance, while memory can draw on information developed across conversations and other available sources. OpenAI also documents model-improvement choices separately from memory controls. Anthropic likewise documents a separate consumer model-improvement choice for Claude.
Set up ChatGPT with only the personalization you want
OpenAI documents ChatGPT’s memory controls at Settings > Personalization > Memory. The names and options shown can vary with the user’s experience. Review the available controls before enabling them, and choose only the features you intend to use.

- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Review the memory options available to your account and enable only the ones you need.
- Inspect what is saved. Where available, review the memory summary or saved memories and remove facts that are unnecessary or outdated.
- Keep model improvement separate. Review the consumer data-use choices under Settings > Data Controls; do not assume a memory choice also controls model improvement.
- Use temporary chat deliberately. Before starting one, check whether existing memories or custom instructions will be used. ChatGPT lets users choose personalization behavior before the temporary conversation begins.
OpenAI says a memory summary is a high-level view and may not include every detail or source that Memory can reference. Sources may include prior chats, files, custom instructions, or connected email, so the visible summary is not a complete inventory.

Use temporary chats for one-off questions, with limits in mind
Temporary and incognito modes can be useful when a conversation should not become part of ordinary personalization, but their boundaries differ by service. In ChatGPT, temporary chats do not create or update memories; users can choose whether existing memories and custom instructions are used. Saving a temporary chat converts it into a regular chat. Claude Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when Model Improvement is enabled. Neither behavior should be read as a universal promise that no data is retained.

Keep memory, history, and deletion in sync
Deleting a chat and deleting a saved fact are not necessarily the same action. OpenAI says turning off Memory does not delete past chats; if memory is enabled again, it may create new remembered information from chats that remain in history.
If you want a fact removed from ChatGPT, remove the saved memory and check where else that information appears. OpenAI says complete removal may require deleting the memory and each source where the information appears, including chats, files, or connected apps. Deleting only the chat may leave a distinct saved memory; deleting only the memory may leave past mentions in chats.

OpenAI states that logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. That is a provider-stated limit for those logs, not a general deletion period for every kind of account data.

Claude consumer plans
Anthropic’s July 1, 2026 help article applies to Claude Free, Pro, and Max, and to Claude Code when used under those plans. Anthropic says deleted consumer conversations leave chat history immediately and are deleted from backend storage within 30 days. If a user allows chats or coding sessions to be used to improve Claude, Anthropic says data may remain in de-identified form in model-training pipelines for up to five years. Incognito chats are excluded from model improvement.

Gemini and Google accounts
Google says Gemini Apps Activity has an 18-month default auto-delete period, which users can shorten, lengthen, or turn off. That setting is distinct from organizational retention. For Google Workspace accounts using Google Vault, administrator retention rules can apply to Gemini temporary chats and may preserve conversations even after users delete them from their view. Google warns that Workspace domain administrators or Vault users may still see activity for a period defined by the domain’s Gemini retention rules.
Account type, plan, region, product version, and workspace configuration can affect which controls appear and what deletion means. For a managed work or school account, check the administrator’s policy rather than assuming personal-account settings apply.
Use a short privacy check before each new use
- What recurring task needs continuity, and what is the minimum context that supports it?
- Is the information sensitive, temporary, or tied to a project that will end?
- Will this chat use existing memories or instructions, and will it create or update memory?
- Are model improvement and chat history controlled separately in this service?
- Could a connected app, file, or organization retention policy provide or preserve the information?
- If you later remove the fact, do you know which saved memories, chats, files, or connected sources must be cleared?
These are provider-documented controls and retention statements, not an independent audit or a guarantee that any setting makes an account anonymous or prevents all access.
