Set up an AAC app around the communicator’s priorities, access method, and everyday device—not a generic template. Add useful vocabulary, keep navigation learnable, configure and test speech and input, then check offline access and backup recovery before relying on the app away from home.
1. Start with the communicator’s real situations
Begin by asking the communicator which conversations matter most: at home, school, work, appointments, or in the community. Identify the device they will actually use and the way they prefer to select or compose messages. A diagnosis alone does not determine the right layout or access settings; the person’s abilities, preferences, and daily routines do.

AAC apps may offer different ways to access vocabulary, but availability varies by product. For example, Public AAC lists touch, switch scanning, dwell, and camera-based head or gaze pointing in its features documentation. Treat that as a description of Public AAC, not a list of capabilities every app supports.
2. Build a vocabulary and layout that is usable and learnable
Start with useful everyday vocabulary, then add the communicator’s names, activities, places, interests, and quick messages. A board should support both frequent words and personally meaningful communication; a collection of topic buttons alone may leave important everyday messages hard to reach.

- Setup in ~40 seconds — open the box, power on, start speaking.
- No Wi-Fi required — works offline anywhere.
- One-time purchase — no subscriptions, no surprise fees.
- Start small, grow big — begin with a few tiles and expand to large boards as skills grow.
- 3,400+ built-in images for everyday communication.
Keep familiar words in stable positions when the app allows it. A consistent layout can make navigation easier to learn, while frequent rearranging may disrupt a learned route to a message. Make edits with the communicator and check whether each change helps without making familiar words harder to find.
Apps differ in how they handle layouts and board sharing. Unity AAC describes consistent motor plans, core-word access, a Word Finder, and layouts with 28, 36, 60, or 84 cells on its feature page; those are Unity-specific options, not a recommended cell count for every communicator. Public AAC says its boards can be edited in place and organized around topics, people, and places; it also documents Open Board Format import and export on its features page. AAC溝通50+ documents standard and custom layouts, vocabulary management, and board sharing in its operating guide.

4. Choose speech output and test complete messages
Choose a voice and speech behavior with the communicator where possible. Test a familiar word, a stored short message, and a new message composed in the app. Listen at a useful volume in the places where the app will be used, since a voice that works in a quiet room may be difficult to hear elsewhere.
AAC溝通50+ documents selectable voice options in its getting-started guide. Public AAC documents text-to-speech and device or downloadable offline voices in its features documentation. Voice availability and behavior depend on the app, device, and selected voice; the available sources do not establish one universally best voice or speech rate.

5. Check offline use and recovery before you need them
Test the app without connectivity
If the communicator may need to communicate without internet access, disable connectivity on the actual device and test the app. Check that the important boards open, editing works if needed, and speech plays. Do not infer offline support from an app’s general description: behavior differs by product and may depend on an initial visit, downloaded voice, or local files.

Find and test the board’s backup or transfer route
Before investing time in a customized board, find out what happens if the device is replaced, the app is reinstalled, or the communicator needs the board on another device. Apps may rely on local storage, an account, export files, or cloud backup; those options are not interchangeable. Follow the chosen app’s current instructions, then test that its recovery route actually restores the board and settings you need.
AAC溝通50+ says guest-mode layouts remain on the current device, while an account can retrieve layouts on another device in its getting-started guide. Public AAC says boards can be exported and that an optional account syncs boards in its features documentation. Avaz’s App Store listing notes iCloud backup improvements in its version history. These examples describe different products and do not establish a shared backup procedure; check the current version of the app you use.
6. Compare apps by the setup needs that matter
When choosing or configuring an app, compare the features that affect this communicator’s day-to-day use rather than assuming products offer the same capabilities.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Access: Which input methods does the app support, and will they work with the intended device?
- Vocabulary and layout: Can the communicator reach useful core and personal vocabulary in a layout they can learn?
- Speech: Are the needed voices and speech behaviors available, including offline options if required?
- Storage and transfer: Can boards be exported, backed up, synced, or restored on another device?
- Compatibility: Does the app support the communicator’s operating system and equipment?
- Editing: Can the communicator and trusted supporters make changes without disrupting familiar navigation?
Because these capabilities differ, verify current vendor documentation for the selected app and device. For example, Public AAC, AAC溝通50+, Unity AAC, Avaz AAC, and AbleNet support describe product-specific features and limitations; one product’s documentation should not be used to infer another’s capabilities.
7. Revisit the setup as communication needs change
Vocabulary, routines, and access needs can change. Review the board with the communicator and adjust it when new names, activities, or messages become useful. After a change, check that familiar words remain findable and that the communicator can still use the chosen access method comfortably. AAC溝通50+ documents editable vocabulary and layouts in its operating guide, while Unity AAC describes vocabulary-builder functionality on its feature page.
