No—ordinary Windows hibernation use is not shown to wear out an SSD. Hibernate does write saved system state to a file on the primary system drive, so it adds writes when that drive is an SSD. Microsoft’s documentation explains that behavior but does not give a universal number of bytes written per hibernation or establish that normal use shortens an SSD’s life.
What happens to an SSD when Windows hibernates?
During a hibernate transition, Windows saves system and user state to a hibernation file on the primary system drive, compresses the saved state, and then powers down. If that drive is an SSD, the operation writes data to it. Microsoft describes the mechanism in its system power states documentation.

That confirms there are writes; it does not establish that a particular SSD is at risk. The Microsoft sources cited here do not quantify typical writes per hibernation, connect them to an SSD’s endurance rating, or show that routine hibernation causes premature failure.
How many writes does hibernation make?
There is no general per-session write figure in the cited Windows documentation. The configured size of hiberfil.sys is not a measurement of how much data Windows writes during each transition.

Microsoft documents default capacities of 40% of physical memory for a full hibernation file and 20% for a reduced file. Those percentages describe file configuration, not bytes written every time the PC hibernates. Microsoft’s On/Off Transition Performance documentation includes a “Hiberfile Write Duration” metric, which measures time spent writing for transition-performance assessment; it does not supply a general write-volume or SSD-wear statistic.
To assess an individual drive, you would need evidence for that SSD model and its workload, including actual writes and the drive’s endurance information. The cited Windows material does not provide that drive-specific assessment. Microsoft discusses endurance terms such as TBW and DWPD in its SSD endurance overview, but that is general context rather than a hibernation measurement.

Does hiberfil.sys write the whole file every time?
The file’s configured capacity alone cannot answer that question. Microsoft documents how Windows saves state and the default capacities of full and reduced hibernation files, but the cited documentation does not specify a typical amount written in each transition or say that the entire configured capacity is written every time. Treating the file size as a per-hibernate write count would overstate what the documentation establishes.

Hibernate, sleep, shutdown, and Fast Startup compared
| Mode | Power while away | What happens to the current session | Resume behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep | Uses power to retain state in volatile memory. | Session remains in memory. | Resumes quickly. |
| Hibernate | Uses less power than sleep. | Windows saves system context to storage before powering down. | Loads the saved state; slower than sleep. |
| Full shutdown | Powered down. | Current session is ended rather than preserved for resuming. | Windows starts a new session. |
| Fast Startup | Powered down after a reduced hibernation transition. | Windows logs off the user and saves a reduced state; it is not a preserved user session or a full shutdown in the same sense. | Uses the saved reduced state during startup. |
Microsoft describes Hibernate as useful when a mobile PC will be unused for an extended period and charging is unavailable: it uses less power than sleep, though startup is slower. See Microsoft’s guide to shutting down, sleeping, or hibernating. Windows’ distinctions between sleep states, Hibernate, and Fast Startup are also described in its system sleeping states documentation.

Hybrid sleep is another option on supported configurations: it combines a sleep state with a hibernation file, allowing the saved state to be recovered if power is lost during sleep. Availability and behavior depend on hardware and configuration, as Microsoft notes in its power-state documentation.
How to check which hibernation file type Windows uses
- Open Command Prompt or Terminal as an administrator. You need an elevated command window to change hibernation settings.
- Check available power states: run
powercfg /a. This reports which sleep and hibernation options are available on the PC. - Check or change the hibernation file type: Microsoft documents
powercfg /h /typefor managing the file type. A full file supports Hibernate, hybrid sleep, and Fast Startup; a reduced file supports Fast Startup. Consult the Microsoft power-state documentation for the command’s supported usage.
Changing the file type is a power-state configuration choice, not a documented way to measure or eliminate a particular amount of SSD wear.

Should you disable Hibernate to protect an SSD?
The available evidence does not justify disabling Hibernate solely out of fear that ordinary use will wear out an SSD. Use Hibernate when its lower power draw and saved system context suit your needs; use Sleep for faster return when keeping the session in memory is practical. Choose a full shutdown when you want to end the session.

Windows also has separate idle-timer settings that determine when a device sleeps or hibernates; these are distinct from the write-volume question. Microsoft documents those settings in Display, sleep, and hibernate idle timers.
