To send AcelleMail campaigns through Amazon SES, you need a verified sender identity in one AWS region, an SES account that can reach your recipients, and an AcelleMail sending server that uses the same region and the correct credential type. Most failed setups trace back to one of those three points, so this guide works through them in that order, then covers the AcelleMail configuration and a test send before any campaign goes out.
This walkthrough describes the documented setup steps from AWS’s Amazon SES documentation and AcelleMail’s knowledge-base guide dated June 1, 2026. It does not report delivery rates or performance results, and it cannot guarantee inbox placement. Check the AWS console and the AcelleMail interface you are running, because both change over time.

Before you start
Confirm these items before you open either console:
- You run AcelleMail and have administrator access to its sending settings.
- You have access to an AWS account with permission to use Amazon SES in the region you choose.
- You have decided which region will host the SES identity, the SES endpoint, and the SMTP credentials. Use that same region for every step below.
- You have a sender email address or a domain you control, with access to its DNS records if you verify a domain.
Step 1: Verify the sender identity in your SES region
In Amazon SES, a sending identity is either a domain or an email address. Amazon Web Services’ official SES documentation states: “Before you can send an email using Amazon SES, you must create and verify each identity that you’re going to use as a “From”, “Source”, “Sender”, or “Return-Path” address.” Verification is a prerequisite, not a guarantee that it will complete immediately.

Verification is regional. An identity verified in one AWS region is not automatically verified in another, so create the identity in the same region you plan to use for AcelleMail.
- Email address identity: create it in SES, then click the verification link AWS sends to that inbox.
- Domain identity: create it in SES and add the DNS verification and authentication records that AWS shows for that identity and region. Do not copy records generated for a different region.
The default sender address you enter in AcelleMail must belong to a verified identity in the region you selected. If it does not, the server test will not reflect a working setup.
Step 2: Check the SES sandbox status
New SES accounts typically start in the sandbox, and sandbox status is set per region. While an account is in the sandbox, SES sends only to verified recipient addresses, with one exception: the SES mailbox simulator addresses, which AWS provides for testing. If your campaigns must reach ordinary, unverified recipients, request production access for that region before launch.

Approval is not guaranteed, and the limits you receive may differ from what you see in other accounts. Plan your first campaign around the limits shown in your own SES account.
Step 3: Choose the AcelleMail integration type
AcelleMail’s guide describes two Amazon SES sending-server options:
| Option | How AcelleMail connects | What you need from AWS |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon SES API | Uses the SES service API with AWS credentials and a region setting | AWS access credentials for an identity with SES sending permissions, plus the region |
| Amazon SES SMTP | Connects to the regional SES SMTP endpoint over TLS | SES SMTP credentials generated for that region, plus the endpoint hostname |
AcelleMail labels the API option as recommended. That is the vendor’s guidance; the documentation does not include an independent comparison of speed or reliability between the two, so choose based on your infrastructure and on how comfortable your team is with each credential type. If your hosting environment restricts outbound SMTP traffic, the API option avoids the port questions covered below.

Step 4: Create SES SMTP credentials (SMTP option only)
If you choose SMTP, do not reuse your AWS console login or your AWS secret access key as the SMTP password. AWS states that SES SMTP credentials differ from AWS credentials and that they are unique to each region. Generate a new SMTP credential set in the same region as your verified identity, store it securely, and limit who can read the AcelleMail configuration that contains it.

| Connection mode | AWS-documented ports | How the connection is secured |
|---|---|---|
| STARTTLS | 25, 587, 2587 | The client opens a plain connection, then upgrades it to TLS with the STARTTLS command. |
| TLS Wrapper (SMTPS) | 465, 2465 | TLS is negotiated from the first byte of the connection. |
Do not pair STARTTLS with port 465 or TLS Wrapper with port 587. Plaintext SMTP is not an option for SES.
If AcelleMail runs on an Amazon EC2 instance, note that AWS throttles outbound email traffic on port 25 by default. Use port 587, 2587, 465, or 2465 instead, or request removal of the port 25 restriction through AWS if your design requires it.
Step 5: Add the sending server in AcelleMail
AcelleMail’s June 1, 2026 guide places sending server setup under the Sending menu. Follow this sequence, and match the labels to your installed version:
- Open Sending, then select Sending servers.
- Create a new server, or edit the existing one you want to replace.
- Select the Amazon SES integration type that matches your choice in Step 3.
- For the API option, enter the AWS credentials and the region that matches your verified identity.
- For the SMTP option, enter the regional SES SMTP endpoint hostname, the SES SMTP username and password, the port, and the TLS mode from the table above.
- Enter the default sender address. It must belong to a verified identity in the same region.
- Save the server, but do not assign it to a campaign yet.
Step 6: Test the connection and send a test message
Use AcelleMail’s test connection or test-email controls if your installed version provides them. Send the test message to an address you control that is verified in SES, so the test works even while the account remains in the sandbox.

Only assign the server to a campaign after the test succeeds. Start the first campaign with a small list, then review the results in both AcelleMail and the SES console before increasing volume.
If the test fails
Work through these checks in order. Each one corresponds to a documented requirement, but a failure can have other causes, so use the message AcelleMail or AWS returns as the next clue.
- Region mismatch: the identity, endpoint, and credentials must all belong to the same region.
- Unverified sender: the default sender address must be on a verified identity in that region.
- Sandbox restriction: the recipient must be verified, or you must be using an SES mailbox simulator address, while the account is in the sandbox.
- Wrong credential type: the SMTP password must be an SES SMTP credential, not an AWS console password or secret access key.
- TLS and port pairing: confirm the mode and port combination from the table in Step 4.
- Outbound network access: confirm the server can reach the SES endpoint on the chosen port, and check any port 25 restriction on EC2.
A passing test confirms that AcelleMail can reach SES and send a message with your settings. It does not establish that a campaign will reach every inbox, and it does not replace monitoring your results after launch.
