The right model depends on hand size and throwing hand, the pocket shape that suits your receiving style, and whether you prioritize smooth receiving or quick transfers. Rawlings’ Pro Preferred line is a credible place to start, and its CM33 and CM43 show how two premium models differ on paper. Treat the manufacturer’s descriptions as the maker’s claims, not as independent test results.
Why there is no universal best mitt
Catchers differ in hand size, glove-hand preference, framing style, and how quickly they need to get the ball out. A pocket that feels ideal for a catcher who receives low pitches may feel too shallow for someone who relies on quick transfers to second base. Published information about professional mitts comes mainly from manufacturers and retailers, and it does not include a standardized head-to-head test across brands. That is why this guide focuses on fit and the specifications that can be checked, rather than declaring a winner.

Start with size and throwing hand
Size and throwing hand come first because they are the easiest factors to get wrong and the hardest to fix later. Rawlings lists the Pro Preferred CM33 as an adult model measuring 33 inches, sold for a right-hand throw. The Pro Preferred CM43 is a 34-inch adult model, and its listing offers a selectable throwing hand. Confirm the throwing hand before you buy, because the CM33 is listed only for right-handed throwers.

Adley Rutschman’s AR35
Rawlings describes the AR35 as deeper and slightly narrower than the other patterns it discusses. A deeper pocket can suit catchers who want to secure pitches that sit below the zone, though the fit depends on hand size and personal feel.
J.T. Realmuto’s Pro Preferred pattern
Rawlings describes this pattern as shallower, which it presents as suited to quick transfers. A shallower pocket lets the catcher get the ball out faster, but it can give less margin on pitches that are hard to catch cleanly.

Jonah Heim’s CM41
Rawlings describes the CM41 as wide and deep. A wide, deep pocket gives a larger target area and is often associated with receiving-focused catchers, according to the manufacturer’s positioning.
Construction details to compare
Rawlings lists the same core construction on both Pro Preferred models: kip leather, a Pittards sheepskin lining, 100% wool-blend padding, and a one-piece solid web. These details are useful for comparing products, but they do not prove how a mitt will perform in game conditions. Use them to understand what the maker is offering, not to rank models.

If you are considering one of these models, check its size, throwing hand, and pocket details on the manufacturer’s or retailer’s product page before comparing it with the Rawlings models.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to test-fit a mitt before committing
- Confirm the size and throwing hand against your own measurements and glove-hand preference. Do not rely on the catcher’s age group alone.
- Put the mitt on and close your hand as you would when receiving a pitch. Note whether the pocket sits where your fingers naturally land.
- Check the pocket depth against your receiving style. Deeper patterns such as those Rawlings describes for the AR35 and CM41 suit catchers who want a larger target, while shallower patterns suit quicker transfers.
- Ask whether the mitt needs a break-in period. Rawlings says the Pro Preferred series breaks in to match the owner’s preferences, so expect the pocket to change over time.
- If you cannot try the mitt in person, buy from a retailer with a clear return policy and plan to evaluate it in your first few practice sessions.
Break-in and what the maker says
Rawlings lists a player break-in figure of 70 for the CM33. This is a manufacturer specification that describes how the glove is intended to break in. It is not a measure of durability, catch rate, or performance, and it is not comparable with break-in values from other brands unless those brands publish the same measure.
