How to Set Up AI Customer Support for a Shopify Store

A practical guide to turning on Shopify Inbox’s AI agent, preparing accurate store information, testing its persona, and setting a human handoff.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To set up automatic AI customer support on a Shopify store, install Shopify Inbox, confirm the store meets the Inbox agent’s requirements, prepare accurate product and policy information, then turn on the agent in Shopify admin > Sales channels > Inbox. Choose whether it handles every new conversation or only those arriving when staff are unavailable. Before enabling it for customers, review its persona, test likely questions, and make sure the route to a person is clear.

What Shopify Inbox’s AI agent does

The Inbox agent answers customer messages automatically in the online-store chat widget. Shopify says it can draw on the product catalog, store policies, Knowledge Base facts and files, and published storefront content such as pages, blog posts, and product-care guides. Common topics include products, shipping, returns, sizing, and store policies. Shopify’s documentation also describes order lookups and adding recommended products to a customer’s cart. See Shopify Inbox and Assigning your Inbox agent.

The agent is opt-in: installing Inbox does not by itself mean the agent is answering customers. Keep this distinction in mind when setting up the separate AI-generated suggested replies feature, which helps staff write replies but does not send the agent’s automatic responses.

Check eligibility before setup

Shopify’s documented requirements for the Inbox agent are:

  • Shopify Inbox is installed.
  • The store has an active online store.
  • The store uses new customer accounts. The agent does not work with legacy customer accounts.
  • The store is on Basic, Grow, Advanced, or Shopify Plus.

These are the requirements Shopify lists for the agent; if an activation option is missing, check these conditions in the admin first. The requirements and availability can change. See Shopify’s assignment requirements.

Prepare the information the agent should use

The quality of the answers depends in part on what the store has published and recorded. Before switching the agent on, check the sources it can draw from rather than trying to put every fact into its persona.

Review store facts

  • Update product descriptions, sizing and care details, and other catalog information.
  • Make shipping, return, and payment information clear and consistent.
  • Review published store pages, blog posts, and product-care guides for stale or conflicting details.
  • Add relevant facts or FAQs to the Knowledge Base when there is no appropriate existing store source.

Use the relevant source as the authoritative place for facts. Shopify cautions that facts put only in the persona may not be used consistently. The Inbox overview describes the agent’s information sources.

Write the persona for service style

Shopify creates a default persona based on store content. Edit it to define the agent’s tone, wording, personality, and service style—for example, whether it should sound concise and friendly. Treat this as communication guidance, not a substitute for accurate product or policy information. Persona settings and testing are covered in Configuring your Inbox agent persona.

Turn on the Inbox agent

  1. Open Inbox: In Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Inbox. Install Shopify Inbox first if it is not already installed.
  2. Enable the agent: Turn on the Inbox agent in Inbox.
  3. Choose an assignment mode:
    • All conversations assigns it to all new conversations.
    • Only when your staff is unavailable assigns it outside the staff availability hours you have configured.
    • Never keeps it off. Shopify says this is the default for stores that had Inbox before the agent became available.
  4. Save and check the result: Assignment changes apply immediately to new conversations. Confirm the selected mode matches the coverage you intend to provide.

The agent assignment controls and requirements are described in Assigning your Inbox agent.

Test the agent and refine its behavior

Use the persona editor’s testing capability to try representative customer questions before relying on the agent in live chats. Test questions that reflect actual store policies and product details, including shipping, returns, sizing, and product care. If an answer is inaccurate or incomplete, correct the product, policy, published page, or Knowledge Base source that should contain the fact; do not rely on a persona instruction to override missing or incorrect store information.

Shopify also offers optional training through practice scenarios and ratings of real conversations. Feedback can produce a persona suggestion, but the merchant reviews and accepts that suggestion; it is not applied automatically. Training changes communication style, not the agent’s factual knowledge. See Training your Inbox agent and Configuring your Inbox agent persona.

Keep a human handoff available

Customers can ask to speak with a person, and issues needing attention can be moved to staff. Shopify says the conversation’s prior AI context carries over when it is handed off. If staff are unavailable, the agent provides the store sender email address. Review staff availability and the handoff path as part of setup, particularly if you assign the agent to cover conversations outside staff hours. Its persona cannot override Inbox settings or built-in safety behavior. Details are in Shopify’s assignment guidance and persona and safety guidance.

Understand the customer notice, privacy, and response limits

Shopify says customers automatically see a notice that the chat is powered by Shopify and that they are chatting with AI; merchants cannot remove or customize it. For privacy language, Shopify advises merchants using its current template privacy policy to review it for accuracy. Merchants with a custom policy should check that it describes Shopify’s role in AI-assisted chat and its processing of chat communications. This is Shopify product guidance, not legal advice. See Assigning your Inbox agent.

Shopify documents these product limits, which are caps rather than performance measures: up to 100 agent responses in one conversation for a customer who is not signed in, up to 1,000 for a signed-in customer, and up to 50 conversations per customer per day. Once a limit is reached, the agent stops responding and hands the conversation to staff if handoff is available; otherwise, it gives the customer the store sender email address. Consult Shopify’s current agent persona and safety-limit documentation for the latest behavior.

How native Inbox differs from a third-party AI connection

Shopify Inbox and a separately connected AI tool are not interchangeable setup choices. Shopify documents Inbox’s built-in Shopify information sources and its staff handoff; a third-party tool has its own provider-specific integration, data handling, and permissions. Shopify warns that data shared through a third-party AI-connected feature is processed by that provider under its terms and privacy policy, and Shopify does not control the provider’s subsequent use, retention, or processing.

Merchant oversight Review the agent’s answers and settings, and maintain accurate store information. Review provider terms and privacy information, applicable customer obligations, and changes made by the connected tool. Shopify cautions that AI outputs can contain errors. Third-party AI considerations and AI-powered tools

Shopify’s general AI guidance does not establish which named third-party customer-support vendors are suitable or how their features compare. If connecting a provider, assess its actual permissions and data practices rather than assuming that Shopify’s Inbox safeguards apply. Shopify notes that AI outputs can contain errors and should be reviewed.

Do not confuse automatic replies with suggested replies for staff

AI-generated suggested replies are a separate Shopify Inbox feature. They help a staff member compose a response; they do not cause the Inbox agent to answer automatically. Shopify’s documented eligibility conditions for suggested replies are that the online store and Shopify admin are in English, Inbox is installed and has at least one conversation, and the store has 200,000 products or fewer. Shopify says suggestions may not appear when store information is insufficient or unavailable for a question. Accurate product listings, clear shipping and return policies, configured shipping and payment information, and useful store pages can help. See AI-generated suggested replies.

How to decide whether to enable it for every conversation

  • Choose All conversations when you want the agent assigned to every new conversation and have checked its information sources, persona, and human handoff.
  • Choose Only when your staff is unavailable when staff should cover conversations during configured availability hours and the agent should handle the remaining hours.
  • Choose Never when you want to keep the agent off. You can still use Inbox to manage conversations with staff.

These modes govern assignment, not answer quality. Use the testing and training options to improve how the agent communicates, and correct its underlying store information when factual answers need fixing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Inbox agent guarantee fewer support tickets or faster resolutions?

No outcome guarantee is established by Shopify’s cited setup documentation. It explains the agent’s functions and controls but does not provide independent resolution-rate, satisfaction, or revenue-impact figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an AI persona override a store policy or force the agent to answer a question?

No. Shopify says persona instructions cannot override built-in safety behavior or Inbox settings. Store facts should be maintained in the appropriate store source or Knowledge Base entry.

What should I review before connecting a third-party AI tool to Shopify?

Check the provider’s terms, privacy information, requested permissions, data use and retention, and any changes the connection can make. Shopify places responsibility on merchants to review those points and monitor the connected tool.
