NU7 activated on Zcash’s public Testnet on 4 October 2026, at block 4,465,026. You can prepare a testnet wallet using the documented self-hosted route—Zebra configured for Testnet and lightwalletd—but the available sources do not verify that any particular consumer wallet app supports NU7 Testnet. Confirm support with the wallet maintainer before importing sensitive wallet data or sending transactions.
What NU7 Testnet status means for your wallet
The Zcash Foundation reported that NU7 activated on public Testnet at block 4,465,026 on 4 October 2026. Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0 was identified as the first release candidate for the upgrade, and its release notes describe NU7 support on Testnet. A release candidate and a test-network activation do not establish stable Mainnet deployment. The draft deployment ZIP leaves assignment of the Mainnet activation height open, so a tentative target should not be treated as a confirmed activation date. NU7 changes target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds and adds per-pool and global shielded action limits. It does not introduce a new transaction format: v4 transactions are invalid after activation, while v5 and v6 remain valid. These are protocol changes, not proof that a particular wallet interface has been updated for the public Testnet. ZIP 259
Which Zcash wallet works on NU7 Testnet?
The reviewed documentation does not verify a named consumer wallet app against NU7 public Testnet. The Zcash Foundation’s lightwalletd documentation names Zashi and Ywallet as examples of clients that use its backend, but that general client context is not confirmation of NU7-testnet compatibility. Ask the app’s maintainer whether the exact app version supports NU7 on public Testnet and how it connects to a Testnet lightwalletd server before using it. lightwalletd documentation and repository

The documented self-hosted architecture is a Zebra node on Testnet with lightwalletd connected to it. This describes the node and backend prerequisites; it is not a tested click-by-click setup for a consumer app. If using a third-party wallet or service instead, confirm that it explicitly offers the NU7 public Testnet and understand who operates the backend.
Set up the documented self-hosted route
- Install and configure Zebra for Testnet. Use Zebra rather than assuming zcashd supports the NU7 testnet path. Configure Zebra’s network as Testnet. Zebra Testnet guide
- Enable Zebra’s JSON-RPC server for lightwalletd. The lightwalletd developer documentation gives port 18232 as the conventional Testnet RPC port. Keep the RPC service bound to localhost; do not expose it beyond the local machine or trusted local environment. lightwalletd README
- Run lightwalletd against the Testnet Zebra node. Follow the current instructions in the lightwalletd documentation for your deployment. Its documentation describes no-TLS operation as unsuitable for production and says production requires a trusted certificate; do not treat a development invocation as production-safe. lightwalletd README
- Wait for lightwalletd to synchronize. The Zebra Book says to wait until lightwalletd is in sync before connecting a wallet. Synchronization matters because the backend needs current chain data to serve the client. Zebra Book: lightwalletd
- Connect only a wallet confirmed to support this network. Use the wallet maintainer’s instructions for the exact app version and backend. The cited guides do not establish universal app menus or toggles, so do not assume a generic “testnet” setting exists.
- Verify the network before using test funds. Check that Zebra, lightwalletd, and the wallet are all connected to Testnet. Use TAZ test coins only; never interpret a testnet balance as spendable Mainnet ZEC.
How to get TAZ, and what it is worth
TAZ is Testnet’s native test currency, distinct from Mainnet ZEC. The official Zcash Testnet Guide states: “Testnet coins are distinct from actual ZEC and do not have value.” It suggests asking in Zcash community support or using a faucet to obtain testnet coins. Availability and any faucet amount are not established here, so check the current community or faucet instructions rather than relying on a promised balance. Zcash Testnet Guide

Security and compatibility checks before sending
- Verify the wallet’s exact version and NU7 public Testnet support with its maintainer.
- Keep Zebra’s RPC endpoint on localhost; do not expose it to the public internet.
- Use appropriate transport security for a production service; lightwalletd describes no-TLS operation as unsuitable for production.
- Confirm the wallet and backend are on Testnet before importing data or sending a test transaction.
- Remember that lightwalletd is under active development and has not received a thorough external audit, according to its repository. Wallet/backend choices and privacy properties depend on the software and service used. lightwalletd repository
