Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA clinic’s outage, delayed appointment, or switch to paper records can be a reason to check with the provider, but none proves that its systems were hacked. The technical evidence is usually visible to the provider’s IT and security teams, not patients. Contact the provider through a phone number or portal you already trust, and distinguish a suspected incident from a confirmed cyberattack—and both from a legally reportable exposure of medical information.
What signs can a patient actually notice?
From a patient’s perspective, the most visible clues are operational: a portal is unavailable, appointments are delayed, prescriptions take longer to process, or staff use a different workflow. Those disruptions can have many causes. Treat them as a reason to ask the provider what is happening, not as evidence of a cyberattack.

The technical signs HHS identifies for possible ransomware include a workforce member realizing they may have opened a malicious link or attachment, unexplained increases in CPU or disk activity, files that become inaccessible or appear encrypted, deleted, renamed, or relocated, and suspicious communications between malware and attacker command-and-control servers. The network communications in particular are likely to be detected by IT staff using intrusion-detection or similar tools—not by patients.
Patients cannot reliably scan or independently verify a healthcare provider’s network. The provider’s security and incident-response team must investigate affected systems, the incident’s scope and spread, and whether malware remains present. An operational disruption, ransomware message, or rumor does not establish what happened.

How to check with the provider safely
- Use a channel you already trust. Call a number from a prior bill, appointment card, or the provider’s established website, or use its familiar patient portal. Do not rely on a phone number or link in an unexpected message until you have verified it independently.
- Ask about the services you need. Check whether appointments, prescriptions, records access, or other care services are affected, and ask how to proceed if they are.
- Look for an official update or direct notice. Follow the provider’s instructions for rescheduling, getting prescriptions, or accessing records through an alternate channel.
- Keep any incident notice. If the provider confirms that personal information may be involved, retain the notice and use the contact details and protective steps it specifies. Do not guess which records were exposed or whether the incident legally counts as a reportable breach.
These are practical steps for patients and caregivers, not a patient-side method for confirming a compromise. HHS’s technical response guidance is directed to the affected organization: activate its incident-response plan, contain the incident, determine its scope, eradicate malware, recover systems, and analyze what happened.
A security incident is not automatically a HIPAA breach
In the United States, HHS says ransomware or other malware on a HIPAA-regulated covered entity’s or business associate’s system constitutes a Security Rule security incident. That classification does not by itself establish that protected health information (PHI) was accessed or disclosed, or that a reportable breach occurred.

For a breach assessment, HHS identifies four factors the entity must consider when evaluating whether there is a low probability that PHI was compromised:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The nature and extent of the PHI involved, including identifiers and the likelihood of re-identification.
- Who used or received the information without authorization.
- Whether the PHI was actually acquired or viewed.
- The extent to which the entity mitigated the risk.
Under HHS’s Breach Notification Rule overview, covered entities and business associates must notify following a breach of unsecured PHI. An impermissible use or disclosure is generally presumed to be a breach unless the applicable entity demonstrates a low probability of compromise through the required assessment. The provider’s investigation and the applicable rules determine what occurred and whether notification is required; a service outage or ransomware message alone does not answer that question.

What to look for in an official notice
If the provider issues a statement or sends a notice, use it to understand the practical impact and the steps requested of you. Look for whether the provider confirms a cyber incident, which services are affected and how to obtain care, whether PHI was involved, what information categories and dates are specified, and which contact route and protective steps the notice provides. The notice may not resolve every technical detail, and patients should not try to adjudicate the provider’s security findings or legal assessment independently.
