Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can send a radio-style YouTube Live broadcast from Ubuntu Server by combining your audio with a still image or looping visual, encoding both in FFmpeg, and publishing to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The exact command depends on your files, FFmpeg build, and Ubuntu release, so first verify the server and media rather than assuming a universal copy-and-paste recipe.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and permission to create or manage the stream.
- An Ubuntu Server host with FFmpeg that supports the input formats, codecs, encoders, and RTMPS/RTMP protocol you intend to use.
- Audio you are entitled to broadcast, plus a still image, loop, or other suitable video source. A conventional YouTube Live encoder workflow needs video as well as audio; audio alone is not a general substitute.
- Reliable upload capacity with headroom above the selected stream bitrate.
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live activation can take at least 24 hours, so enable it before diagnosing FFmpeg or network problems. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Enable live streaming and create a stream
- Sign in to YouTube Studio with an account that has the channel permissions needed to create and manage streams.
- Open Go Live to enter Live Control Room, then create or select a stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Use the RTMPS endpoint when it is offered and your FFmpeg build supports it; RTMPS encrypts transport, unlike RTMP. The endpoint depends on the selected protocol.
- Keep the key secret as you would a password. Do not publish it in a script repository or paste it into a public support post. If exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update your configuration. YouTube’s stream-key guidance describes the key and its handling.
Check FFmpeg and prepare the media on Ubuntu
Install FFmpeg from a trusted source appropriate to your Ubuntu release, or check an existing installation. Package versions and compiled features vary; the Ubuntu manual page available for Bionic does not establish what a current release provides. On the actual server, inspect the build before choosing a command:
ffmpeg -versionshows the version and build configuration.ffmpeg -encoderslists available encoders; check for the video and audio encoders you plan to use.- Test that FFmpeg can read the actual audio and visual files and can use the RTMPS protocol. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation is at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-protocols.html.
Decide how the radio content will play: a single audio file, a sequence or playlist, or a live capture input. Also decide whether the visual is a still image or a moving loop. File inputs need real-time pacing so FFmpeg does not send them faster than playback; playlist looping, synchronization, and image duration depend on the media and FFmpeg version. Validate those behaviors locally with representative files before sending a live stream.

Choose output settings that match YouTube
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, with constant bitrate (CBR) and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
For a straightforward SDR starting point, H.264 video and AAC stereo audio are broadly practical choices when the local build supports them. Set stereo audio to 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as YouTube’s advanced recommendations specify. Select video bitrate from YouTube’s table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single suitable bitrate for every stream. Keep network capacity comfortably above the encoded bitrate and test it: YouTube explicitly recommends running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.

Higher resolution and frame rate increase encoding and upload demands. Choose a setting the server can encode continuously and the connection can sustain, not simply the highest option available. Lower-latency modes can increase playback buffering; a radio stream without real-time interaction can favor stable delivery over minimum latency.

- Inputs: add the chosen audio input and still/loop video input. Input options such as real-time pacing (
-re) apply to file playback; check their placement and behavior for your specific inputs. - Video and audio mapping: ensure the output contains both tracks, with compatible dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, and audio layout for the intended YouTube settings.
- Encoding: select supported video and audio encoders, CBR behavior, the YouTube bitrate for the selected format, and a two-second keyframe interval. Set the recommended audio sample rate and bitrate where appropriate.
- Destination: provide the exact ingest URL and stream key supplied by YouTube, then use an RTMP-compatible output format. FFmpeg documents RTMP publishing with FLV output and real-time input pacing in its protocol documentation.
Avoid embedding a live key directly in a command you may leave in shell history or expose through process listings. Use a protected configuration method appropriate to your server and account, restrict file permissions, and do not commit secrets. Verify the assembled command against the installed FFmpeg help and documentation; flags and filter behavior can differ by build.
Go live and verify the result
- Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate, using audio and visual motion representative of the planned broadcast.
- Watch Live Control Room for the incoming signal and stream-health messages. Confirm that sound is present, the picture dimensions and motion are right, and there are no material warnings.
- Listen to the YouTube playback and check synchronization, clipping, unwanted silence, image transitions, and whether the audio continues as expected at file or playlist boundaries.
- Keep monitoring after starting the intended broadcast. If YouTube reports poor health, compare the actual output settings with its current recommendations and check upload stability.
Make a long-running stream maintainable
For continuous operation, run FFmpeg under a service manager or another process supervisor rather than relying on an interactive SSH session. The correct service configuration depends on the Linux account, media paths, secret storage, playlist method, and restart behavior; a generic unit file can expose a key or fail to find files after reboot.

- Test what happens after a process failure and after a server reboot; verify that the service starts with the intended account and has access to every input.
- Send logs to a location with sensible retention and review them for input errors, disconnects, and repeated restarts.
- Confirm that the playlist or file sequence does not end unexpectedly, and monitor the Live Control Room stream health during operation.
- Plan for network outages, host maintenance, and YouTube interruptions. A restart policy can relaunch a process, but it does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
Copyright and YouTube live rules
Only broadcast audio and visuals for which you have the necessary rights for the intended livestream. YouTube’s livestream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the YouTube Terms of Service.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. It may warn you, replace the live image, interrupt, or terminate a stream when matched content remains. A music license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says licensed content may still require the rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Owning a recording or having a personal-use subscription does not by itself establish livestream broadcast rights. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and obtain permissions that cover the planned use.
Troubleshooting common failures
- Live Control Room does not receive a signal: check that live streaming is activated, the selected stream URL and key match, the key has not been reset, and the local FFmpeg build can connect using the chosen RTMPS or RTMP protocol.
- First stream cannot go live: confirm channel verification and eligibility, then allow for first-time activation, which YouTube says can take at least 24 hours.
- Audio is missing or out of sync: verify that the intended audio input is mapped, that the file decodes, and that pacing and timestamps are appropriate for the selected inputs. Test a representative excerpt before restarting the full broadcast.
- Picture is absent, frozen, or the stream is rejected: confirm that a valid video source is included, dimensions and frame rate are supported, and the output codec/container settings match YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- Stream health warnings or buffering: compare the configured bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for the exact format, run an upload speed test, leave network headroom, and consider reducing resolution or frame rate. Prefer stable latency settings over low latency when interaction is not needed.
- Broadcast stops at a track boundary: check whether the input or playlist actually loops and inspect FFmpeg logs. Looping behavior depends on how the inputs and playlist are constructed; verify it on the installed version.
- Stream is interrupted after a copyright match: stop or replace the matched material and resolve the rights issue. If you hold a license, contact the rights holder about the required Content ID allowlist rather than assuming the license alone prevents automated interruption.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded recordings without maintaining an Ubuntu host and FFmpeg process, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video at the quality supplied, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo is for uploaded video rather than a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
