YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Activate live streaming ahead of launch rather than waiting until the day you want to go live. Check the channel’s Live Control Room for access and any prompts.

Clear every recording and visual for the intended use
YouTube’s livestream terms require you to have the necessary rights to use live content worldwide, including applicable music rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Confirm that your permissions cover livestreaming, rebroadcast, and any archive or later on-demand use you plan to make. Keep permission records for the recordings and visuals in the stream.

Prepare the OBS-to-YouTube setup
Choose your media source
Decide whether to use one authorized music video file or a playlist. A single file has fewer playback elements to troubleshoot; a playlist can provide more variety but adds transitions and loop behavior to test. Add the source to an OBS scene and check that both picture and audio restart or move to the next item as intended. OBS options vary by source type and installed version, so test the actual source rather than relying on an assumed loop setting. Refer to the OBS media-source documentation.
Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a livestream. Choose the intended visibility and schedule or start settings.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key if prompted. If your OBS version offers a direct account connection, you can use it instead; verify the selected broadcast in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish or share it. Reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains channel eligibility and starting a stream. OBS labels can change between versions, so confirm the settings in your installed build.

Choose a resolution and frame rate that your connection can sustain, then use YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for the selected codec. These figures are platform guidance, not a guarantee of a stable stream.

Use the row matching your codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult the same guidance for other output combinations. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its listed advanced audio settings include stereo, 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps. Use RTMPS when configuring the encoder connection. Pick a bitrate your upload can sustain continuously, not just during a brief speed test. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom in its streaming tips. If your connection fluctuates, lower the output bitrate or resolution rather than running at its limit.
Test the complete stream before going public
- Start an unlisted test. Send OBS output to YouTube and wait for the Live Control Room preview to appear.
- Check picture and sound. Confirm the intended visuals, audio levels, and synchronization. Listen through a device separate from the OBS preview if possible.
- Test playback continuity. Let the media reach its end or playlist transition; verify that the picture and audio resume or advance as intended.
- Open the watch page. Check the viewer-facing stream, not only the encoder preview.
- Check stream health and recording. Watch YouTube’s stream-health information and, if recording locally, verify that the file is being created and growing.

Keep the stream running and plan for recovery
For a DIY OBS stream, the operating computer, OBS, media files, power, and internet connection must remain available. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and the playback source, and be ready to restart OBS or repair the source after a failure. A backup power source or internet connection may reduce some risks, but neither makes an uninterrupted stream certain.
- OBS stops sending: check that OBS is open, the correct scene is active, and the stream remains connected in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- Video or audio stops advancing: inspect the media source and playlist transition in OBS; test the same point again before returning to public streaming.
- Connection health deteriorates: reduce bitrate or output quality to leave more upload capacity in reserve, then reconnect and confirm the preview.
- YouTube interrupts the stream for a content match: review the notice, resolve the rights issue, and contact the rights holder about channel allowlisting where applicable.
These checks can help you identify and recover from common faults; they do not establish a guaranteed 24/7 service level.

Plan the replay separately from the live broadcast
YouTube’s full-production guidance says streams up to 12 hours are automatically made into video-on-demand (VOD). For a longer stream, YouTube advises the team to record locally and upload manually; do not assume that one 24-hour event will produce a complete YouTube archive.
