You can send a podcast to YouTube Live by having FFmpeg read your chosen media input and transmit it to YouTube, with Docker running the FFmpeg process and optionally restarting its container if it exits. For the ordinary encoder workflow, YouTube recommends RTMPS. This guide uses a prerecorded audio-and-video file as its example input; live microphones, cameras, static artwork, and mixed sources need different FFmpeg input and encoding choices.
How the setup fits together
- YouTube Live provides the broadcast destination and the stream configuration used by your encoder. Keep the stream key private.
- FFmpeg reads the input file, encodes or passes through compatible audio and video, and sends the output to YouTube.
- Docker runs FFmpeg in a container. A restart policy can restart a process after the container exits, but it does not verify that the broadcast is healthy.
YouTube describes a broadcast as the event and a stream resource as the encoder transmission configuration. See Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.

Before you start
- A podcast video file available to the Docker container, with audio and video streams that your FFmpeg build can read. The example below assumes a prerecorded file; it is not a universal command for live capture or every podcast format.
- Docker installed and able to run containers on a host with sufficient resources and a reliable internet connection.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live and a broadcast/stream configuration created in YouTube Live Control Room.
- The RTMPS ingestion URL and stream key shown for the selected YouTube stream. Do not put a real key in a published command, source repository, or publicly visible log.
- A target resolution and bitrate suitable for your source and upload connection. YouTube recommends testing your upload speed and using audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
Create the YouTube Live destination
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create or select the broadcast and its stream configuration. Set the intended title, visibility, schedule, and audience settings in YouTube.
- Choose the encoder/RTMPS workflow and copy the displayed server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingestion; RTMPS is the secure extension of RTMP. Do not publish the key or reuse an exposed key. See YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Leave Live Control Room available for testing. Before the scheduled start, confirm that the stream preview and health indicators show the incoming video and audio as expected.
Choose the FFmpeg input and output settings
Use a prerecorded file for this example
The example assumes one local file containing both podcast picture and sound. You must make the file accessible inside the container, for example by mounting its directory as a volume. The input path inside Docker must match the mounted path. If the podcast is audio-only, you need a video source such as artwork or a visualizer; a command written for an audiovisual file will not automatically create that visual.
First inspect your source and current FFmpeg build, and decide whether to encode or pass through. Encoding can make a source compatible with the selected YouTube protocol, but uses host CPU or other available encoding resources. Stream copy avoids re-encoding only when the source streams, container, timestamps, and output protocol are compatible. Input options, codec, bitrate, resolution, GOP, and muxer cannot be chosen correctly without knowing the source and current FFmpeg build.

Use YouTube guidance as constraints, not a universal preset
YouTube Help’s live encoder page, current guidance accessed on 2026-10-03, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported video codecs, AAC or MP3 audio in its general guidance, and up to 60 fps. It recommends constant-bitrate encoding, a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1; its advanced recommendations are 128 Kbps stereo or 384 Kbps 5.1. Choose settings that match the selected protocol and your actual input rather than adding all listed codecs or options to one command. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. Details: YouTube Help’s encoder settings.
Use a speed test to establish a sustainable upload bitrate, leaving room for normal network variation. Test with audio and motion similar to the planned show, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the event. These recommendations do not determine a single bitrate or complete FFmpeg command for every source.

This illustrates the container boundary and file mount only. Verify the image’s entrypoint and FFmpeg path, option order, input accessibility, output URL format, and secret-handling approach against that image’s documentation, FFmpeg’s current documentation, and the RTMPS details YouTube provides for your stream. Avoid placing a real stream key directly in a shell command where it may be saved in shell history or exposed in process listings.
FFmpeg documents RTMP-family protocols and an RTMP FIFO muxer example that attempts recovery after temporary network failures. That is a general RTMP example, not a complete YouTube-specific Docker configuration or a tested recipe. Choose a Docker restart policy deliberately
A restart policy concerns container lifecycle, not the quality or health of the YouTube broadcast. Docker documents the following policies and their operational differences:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Policy | What it does | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
no |
Does not automatically restart the container. | Suitable when you want to inspect failures and restart manually. |
on-failure[:max-retries] |
Restarts after a non-zero exit; an optional retry limit can be set. | It is exit-code-driven and does not restart the container merely because the Docker daemon restarts. |
always |
Restarts the container when it exits and when the daemon starts. | A manually stopped container can be restarted when the daemon restarts. |
unless-stopped |
Restarts after exit and daemon restart unless the container was manually stopped. | A manual stop remains in effect until the container or daemon is manually restarted. |
Docker says restart policies take effect only after a container has started successfully for at least 10 seconds. Select a policy based on whether an operator’s manual stop should persist and whether repeated exits should trigger retries. For example, a service intended to resume after host/daemon restarts may use unless-stopped; add a retry limit only if the resulting behavior is appropriate for your operations. See Docker’s restart policy documentation.

Test, monitor, and troubleshoot
Before the broadcast
- Start the container with a short, representative test and confirm the mounted file is readable and FFmpeg can open each intended stream.
- Watch FFmpeg output for input, encoder, timestamp, network, or authentication errors. Check container logs and exit status if the process stops.
- Confirm YouTube Live Control Room receives audio and video and reports stream health. Verify the preview, audio levels, and motion before beginning the actual show.
- Test the complete route under conditions similar to the planned stream and monitor it during the event. A container that is running does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a usable broadcast.
Common failure paths
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open the input | Mount source path, permissions, filename, or file format. | Check the container’s mounted path and logs; confirm the file exists and is readable inside the container. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | RTMPS URL, stream key, protocol-specific output options, or outbound network access. | Compare the destination with the values for the selected YouTube stream, protect and refresh an exposed key, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection errors. |
| Video or audio is missing or incompatible | Source streams, encoding choices, muxer, or selected ingestion protocol. | Inspect the input and match codecs and output/container settings to current YouTube requirements for that protocol. |
| Stream health is poor or playback stalls | Upload capacity, bitrate, source complexity, or network instability. | Run an upload speed test, reduce output demands if appropriate, and test with representative movement and audio while watching YouTube health messages. |
| Container repeatedly exits or does not return | FFmpeg error, restart-policy choice, retry behavior, or a manual stop. | Inspect container logs and exit status; confirm the intended policy and whether it was manually stopped. A restart policy cannot fix a persistent media, credential, or network error. |
| Video continues but YouTube has stopped receiving it | Process liveness differs from end-to-end stream health. | Check YouTube Live Control Room as well as FFmpeg and container logs; do not treat a running container as a health check. |
When HLS is the better fit
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended ordinary encoder path. HLS is an alternative with separate stream-key setup, an HTTPS ingestion URL, and segment-specific constraints; YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. Do not mix RTMP and HLS settings.
YouTube Help’s HLS instructions specify 1–4 second segments, TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments, no byte ranges, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. The HLS guidance lists H.264 and HEVC video with AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. Google’s HLS developer guide describes M2TS, H.264 or HEVC, AAC, closed GOPs, and up to 60 fps. Check the current requirements for the exact protocol selected before building an FFmpeg output. Sources: YouTube Help’s HLS setup and Google’s HLS ingestion guide.
