You can use Windows PowerShell to launch and supervise an encoder that sends a playlist to YouTube, but PowerShell does not itself rotate or encode video. You need an encoder configured for your media and a YouTube stream key. The steps below cover the setup and the checks to make before leaving it unattended; the playlist command and crash-recovery behavior depend on your encoder and have not been verified here.
What you need for a continuous YouTube stream
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder guide.
- A Windows PC that can stay on and connected to the internet for the stream’s full duration.
- An encoder that supports your chosen playlist or repeat workflow. PowerShell can start the encoder, but it does not supply playlist-rotation or video-encoding functionality.
- The media files and a tested encoder configuration, including YouTube’s server URL and stream key.
YouTube distinguishes an ongoing channel feed from a separate scheduled live event in its Live Streaming API documentation. Choose the approach that fits whether you need one persistent feed or individually managed broadcasts.

Prepare YouTube Studio and the encoder
- Enable live streaming. If the channel has not streamed before, enable the feature and allow time for activation; YouTube says this may take up to 24 hours.
- Open Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule a broadcast, set its visibility and event details, and locate the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder setup.
- Configure your encoder. Enter the server URL and key, select the playlist/repeat behavior supported by that encoder, and set the media and output options appropriate to your files and connection. There is no universally optimal bitrate or resolution established here, so use the encoder’s current guidance and YouTube’s settings shown for your stream.
- Start a short test. Confirm that the encoder connects and that video and audio appear in the Live Control Room preview. For a scheduled broadcast, check whether YouTube requires you to press Go live to begin the public event.
Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in shared logs. If it is exposed, use the current Live Control Room controls to replace it.

Use PowerShell to launch and supervise the encoder
PowerShell’s Start-Process can launch a local program with arguments, a working directory, wait behavior and output redirection. Microsoft documents those options in Start-Process. The exact arguments for your encoder and playlist are encoder-specific; the available documentation here does not establish a verified FFmpeg rotation command, so do not copy an unvalidated command into an unattended stream.

- Write down the configuration. Record the encoder executable path, playlist/media location, required arguments, working directory, and where diagnostic output should go. Keep credentials out of logs and scripts that other users can read.
- Launch interactively first. Run the chosen encoder configuration from PowerShell and observe both its output and the YouTube preview. Confirm that the intended files play in the intended order and that audio, picture and connection remain stable.
- Test failure behavior deliberately. Stop the encoder during a test and observe what happens in PowerShell and Live Control Room. A successful initial launch does not establish that the encoder will restart, resume the correct playlist position, or reconnect after a network interruption.
- Add startup or recovery only after testing. Windows ScheduledTasks cmdlets can register and start background tasks. See Microsoft’s Register-ScheduledTask documentation. A scheduled task can help launch a process at startup or support a recovery design, but it does not by itself guarantee stream reliability; configure and test its trigger, account permissions, working directory and failure policy.
- Run a supervised trial before leaving it unattended. Check logs, playlist progression, preview status and what happens after a planned encoder exit. Also test a reboot if startup launch is part of your plan.
Choose continuous feed or separate broadcasts

Archive needs can affect how long you keep a session running. YouTube Help states, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” If retaining an archive matters, plan session lengths accordingly and verify the current behavior in YouTube’s encoder guidance; that rule does not mean a longer stream will be archived.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
- No preview in Live Control Room: verify that the encoder is running, that the server URL and stream key match the stream you created, and that the stream is enabled on the channel.
- Preview appears but the scheduled event is not live: check whether the event requires you to select Go live.
- Playlist does not advance or repeat: check the encoder’s playlist configuration and file paths. PowerShell only launches the configured process; it cannot correct unsupported playlist syntax or incompatible media.
- Stream stops when you sign out or reboot: review how the encoder is launched and whether a properly configured scheduled task is needed. A task must run under an account with access to the executable, media and working directory.
- Encoder exits and does not return: inspect its output and task history, then test a restart policy with an intentional exit. Neither starting a process nor registering a scheduled task alone proves automatic recovery.
- Connection drops: determine whether the encoder reconnects and whether the YouTube event remains usable. Internet-loss recovery is not guaranteed by PowerShell; test it with the specific encoder and network setup.
- Expected archive is missing: check whether the session was under 12 hours and review YouTube’s current archive guidance.
