Use Node-RED to trigger a rotation on a schedule, then use OAuth-authorized YouTube Data API calls to add or remove playlist items. Node-RED handles timing and orchestration; YouTube’s API performs the playlist changes. You must define the rotation rule yourself—for example, which video to add and which item to remove at a chosen local time.
Choose how the playlist should rotate
First decide what each scheduled run should do. There is no universal rotation policy: you might add the next video in a sequence and remove the oldest item, or replace a particular item according to your own rules. Specify the target playlist, how the next video is selected, whether anything is removed, and what the flow should do if a requested video is already present.

Keep the playlist ID, video resource IDs, and playlist-item IDs distinct in your design. The playlist ID identifies the destination playlist; a video ID identifies the video; a playlist-item ID identifies that video’s entry in that playlist.
Choose the Node-RED scheduling approach
Use an explicit scheduler for local-time rotations
The node-red-contrib-cron-plus Flow Library listing describes cron and date schedules, dynamic schedule control, time-zone support, and persistent schedule state. The listing inspected for this article identifies version 3.2.0; package versions and behavior can change, so check its current documentation before relying on a feature in production.

For a fixed local wall-clock time, set the intended region/area time zone rather than assuming the Node-RED host’s default time zone is the one you want. The package documentation describes daylight-saving behavior: a repeated local time fires once, while a scheduled time skipped during a forward clock change runs as soon as possible after the transition.
Use a simple timer only when its limits fit
A basic timer pattern can trigger a flow at a repeating interval, but do not assume it handles a named time zone, daylight-saving transitions, dynamic schedule changes, or persistence across restarts. If the rotation must occur at a particular local time, verify those behaviors explicitly or use a scheduler that documents them.

Decide how Node-RED will call YouTube
Do not assume the community YouTube node can write
The community package node-red-node-youtube is listed as version 0.0.5 and documents nodes for listing channel, playlist, and playlist-item information. Its public listing does not establish support for adding or deleting playlist items. Treat it as a possible listing tool, not a verified end-to-end rotation solution, unless you confirm that its current implementation supports the write operations you need.

The alternative is to send authenticated HTTP requests from the flow to YouTube’s Data API. This gives you direct control over the documented write operations, but you must handle OAuth authorization, request bodies, response parsing, token renewal, and errors. Google documents playlistItems.insert for adding an item and playlistItems.delete for deleting one.

Both write operations require an allowed OAuth scope. Review the scope options in the endpoint references and authorize only the access your application needs. A read-only API credential is not enough to perform playlist mutations.
Build the scheduled rotation flow
- Set the schedule. Configure the scheduler node with the intended recurrence and time zone. If the schedule must survive a Node-RED restart, verify and configure persistent schedule state as documented by the scheduler.
- Load the current playlist items. At each trigger, retrieve the target playlist’s entries using a suitable YouTube API request or a verified listing node. Retain the playlist ID and each returned playlist-item ID; do not substitute a video ID where a playlist-item ID is required.
- Apply your selection rule. Use the current entries and your defined rotation policy to choose the video to add and, if applicable, the entry to remove. Check for duplicates before attempting an insertion.
- Insert the new video when needed. Send an authenticated
playlistItems.insertrequest with the destination playlist ID and the video resource ID in the request body. Follow Google’s endpoint reference for the exact request format and required fields. - Delete the intended entry when needed. Send an authenticated
playlistItems.deleterequest using the playlist-item ID for the entry to remove—not the video ID. - Record the outcome. Log the scheduled time, operation, target IDs, response status, and any API error. If a request times out or returns an ambiguous result, inspect the playlist state before retrying; a blind retry can create duplicate work or obscure what succeeded.
Handle time zones and daylight saving deliberately
A schedule expressed in UTC stays tied to UTC; a schedule expressed in a region/area time zone follows that region’s wall-clock rules. Choose based on the audience or operational requirement, and document the choice so a future maintainer knows whether a clock change should shift the rotation in UTC.

Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
With cron-plus, the documented behavior is that a repeated local time during a backward clock transition fires once. If a forward transition skips the scheduled local time, the schedule runs as soon as possible after the transition. If that behavior is unsuitable—for example, a run must never occur late—design a separate missed-run policy and verify it against the current package documentation.

Budget API quota
Google’s YouTube Data API documentation accessed October 3, 2026 lists a cost of 50 quota units for each playlistItems.insert call and 50 units for each playlistItems.delete call. The API guide reports 10,000 default daily quota units combined for other endpoints and says the default quota may change. Check your project’s quota console and the live API documentation before deploying; listing calls and other API usage also affect the available budget.

Make failures visible and safe to recover
The endpoint references describe authorization failures, missing IDs or resources, duplicate playlist videos, unsupported playlist operations, and maximum-item conditions. Surface these errors in Node-RED logs or notifications, and retain enough context to identify which scheduled run and target IDs were involved. For ambiguous failures, read the playlist again before deciding whether to retry.
Recheck dependencies
The YouTube community-node listing is legacy evidence, not a guarantee of present-day maintenance or write support. The scheduler package is independently maintained. Before a production deployment, check the current package release notes, API endpoint references, OAuth configuration, and project quota status.
Or let it run in the cloud
Node-RED playlist rotation changes playlist contents; it does not by itself keep a live broadcast running. If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on.
