You can run a WooCommerce promotion without editing a product’s regular or sale price, but it is a separate promotion rule—not WooCommerce’s native scheduled sale-price feature. The rule must be applied consistently wherever shoppers see prices and complete purchases. A custom cart adjustment alone may leave product pages, sale filters, checkout totals, or connected feeds showing a different price.
What “without changing product prices” means in WooCommerce
WooCommerce’s built-in sale workflow stores a sale price on the product, with optional start and end dates. For variable products, prices are set on individual variations. The documented editor path is Products → All Products, open a product, then use Product data → General to enter a sale price and, if needed, schedule it. See WooCommerce’s product-management documentation.

The product REST API makes the distinction visible: regular_price and sale_price are editable fields, while price and on_sale are read-only current-state fields in the response. If those stored sale fields must remain untouched, the discount needs to be represented as a separately evaluated promotion rather than as a native product sale. See the WooCommerce REST API product properties.

| Consideration | Native scheduled sale | Custom or extension promotion |
|---|---|---|
| Where discount is represented | Sale-price field on the product or variation. | A separate rule evaluated for the shopper, cart, or another defined purchase context; product sale fields can remain unchanged. |
| Scheduling | Sale start and end dates can be entered in the product editor. | Depends on the custom implementation or extension; the schedule behavior must be verified. |
| Catalog visibility | Product sale state is available to customer-facing product views, and the Store API supports filtering product collections by on_sale. |
Visibility must be designed. A cart-only rule may not appear on product pages or in sale-filtered collections. |
| Purchase consistency | Uses WooCommerce’s product sale-price model, but connected integrations still need checking. | Must be tested across product display, cart, checkout, order records, taxes, emails, refunds, and connected feeds. |
| Operational work | Configure the product or each variation in the editor. | Maintain custom code or an extension and verify its compatibility with the store’s setup. |
WooCommerce documents customer-facing product data and Store API product collection filters, including on_sale, in its Store API documentation. That means a separate discount may not automatically behave like a native sale in catalog queries or API consumers. Decide whether the promotion should be visible only in the cart or also on product and category pages, and implement each view deliberately.
#1 Best Overall
Design the promotion around the full purchase flow
A cart discount is only one part of the system. WooCommerce documents a Store API extension point for adding supplemental cart-item data; that mechanism can carry additional item information, but its documentation does not define a complete flash-sale pricing strategy or guarantee matching behavior across catalog, checkout, and external feeds. See the Store API guide to additional cart-item data.
Before choosing an implementation, specify the promotion’s scope: eligible products and variations, discount calculation, quantity limits, schedule, and where the offer should be displayed. Then verify that the same eligibility decision and final amount carry through the purchase flow. A design that adjusts only the displayed cart total can create a mismatch with taxes, the recorded order, customer emails, or downstream integrations.

Checks to complete before launch
- Product and category pages: Confirm whether the discount is shown there, and that the displayed amount agrees with the cart.
- Cart and checkout: Check line amounts, totals, taxes, and how the promotion interacts with any coupons or other discounts used by the store.
- Order lifecycle: Confirm the order records the intended amounts and that refunds and customer emails reflect them.
- Products and quantities: Test eligible variations and the behavior when shoppers add multiple units or reorder.
- Timing: Define start and end times in the store’s timezone and verify behavior at both boundaries.
- Catalog and connected systems: Check Store API responses, sale-filtered collections, feeds, and other integrations that consume product prices or sale status.
- Caching: Check whether page, object, or API caches can serve a stale price after the promotion starts, ends, or changes.
Keep stock and purchase limits separate from discount logic
Inventory controls answer whether an item can be purchased, not what price the promotion should charge. WooCommerce’s product settings cover stock tracking and backorders, while Sold individually limits a cart to one of that product. WooCommerce notes that sold-individually behavior does not prevent a customer from placing repeated orders; it is not a substitute for an account-level or campaign-wide purchase limit. See WooCommerce’s product-management documentation.

For merchants who need scheduled recurring sale cycles, WooCommerce documents a Recurring Sale extension. Its documented approach applies a configured sale price, so it is an option for recurring native sale pricing, not evidence of a discount system that leaves product sale-price fields unchanged. See the Recurring Sale extension documentation.

Document versions and verify your store
WooCommerce documentation describes the relevant product fields and Store API extension points, but it does not establish the exact code, hooks, tax handling, coupon behavior, cache policy, or compatibility of a particular custom flash-sale implementation. Record the WooCommerce and WordPress versions tested, along with the product types, theme, extensions, and integrations involved. Re-run the purchase-flow checks when those components change.
