You can use a Hetzner Cloud server as a remote Windows machine for a YouTube encoder, but first confirm with Hetzner and Microsoft that your intended Windows installation and licence are supported for that Cloud server. Hetzner’s custom-ISO documentation does not by itself establish a supported or licensed Windows Cloud setup. Once the server is ready, secure remote access, install and configure an encoder, connect it to a YouTube Live event with its stream URL and key, and test the broadcast. An always-on setup is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming or a permanent archive.
What this setup does—and what it does not guarantee
A Windows Hetzner server can host an encoder that sends a video or other encoder input to YouTube Live. The broad sequence is to provision the Cloud server and its network, establish secure administration, install Windows through a route Hetzner confirms is supported and licensed, configure an encoder, connect it to a YouTube Live event, and monitor the result.

This is a self-managed arrangement: you are responsible for the Windows environment, encoder, network configuration, updates, and recovery. The available documentation does not establish a particular Hetzner Cloud Windows image, licensing route, Windows installation procedure, or uptime figure for running OBS on a Windows Cloud VM. It also does not establish that a single live event will remain connected indefinitely. Server maintenance, Windows updates, encoder failures, network interruptions, and YouTube interruptions can all affect continuity.
Choose the right kind of stream
An encoder running on a server is not the same as a camera. If your goal is to broadcast prerecorded video continuously, confirm that the workflow and content comply with YouTube’s applicable rules. YouTube also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams; that is a different use case from capturing arbitrary live input on a Windows desktop.

Before planning around one continuous event, check YouTube’s current event and archive behavior. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish how a longer 24/7 broadcast will be archived.
Before creating the Hetzner server
Confirm Windows support and licensing first
Ask Hetzner whether the Windows image or installation route you intend to use is supported on the specific Cloud server, what licence applies, and whether any additional Windows costs apply. Confirm licensing with Microsoft as needed. Hetzner documents attaching custom ISOs, but that general capability does not prove that a Windows Cloud installation is supported or licensed. A Windows Server add-on described for Hetzner dedicated root servers should not be assumed to apply to Cloud instances.
Do not start by replacing an existing server image unless you are prepared to lose its disk data: Hetzner warns that changing the image after creation erases existing disk data. Back up anything you need before making that change.

Choose the server and network in Hetzner Console
- In Hetzner Console, start the server-creation workflow and choose the server type and location appropriate to your needs.
- Review the operating-system image, networking, firewall, and backup choices. If the Windows path you need is not clearly offered, resolve that with Hetzner before provisioning or attaching an ISO.
- Choose a public-network arrangement deliberately. Hetzner documents options including public IPv4/IPv6, one public address, or no public address. A server without a public address needs to connect through a private Network.
- Decide how you will administer the server and how you will recover important files or configuration before relying on it for a broadcast.
Hetzner’s server creation documentation describes the available creation choices and the image-change warning.
Plan remote access and firewall rules
Do not expose a Windows remote-administration endpoint casually. Hetzner Cloud Firewalls allow traffic that matches rules you define; if no rules are set, inbound traffic is blocked and outbound traffic is permitted by default. That is a useful restrictive starting point, not a complete Windows remote-access security recipe.
- Decide on a secure administration route before you need to reach the server. Confirm the method and its security settings using current Windows and Hetzner guidance.
- Review both the Hetzner Cloud Firewall and Windows Firewall rules. Verify the access you need without opening unrelated inbound traffic.
- Test that your administration route works from the intended location before depending on the machine remotely.
Hetzner’s Cloud Firewall overview explains its rule-based traffic behavior and defaults. It does not provide a complete Windows RDP-hardening procedure.

Install Windows and verify networking
Use only the Windows installation method and licence that Hetzner confirms for your Cloud instance. The available Hetzner material establishes that custom ISOs can be attached, but it does not establish a Windows-specific Cloud installation walkthrough. Follow current Windows-specific and Hetzner instructions for the exact image and server type rather than adapting a Linux guide.
Network configuration deserves a separate check after a manual ISO installation. Hetzner warns that DHCP may not configure networking correctly and that a default gateway may need manual configuration. Its gateway example is Linux-specific; do not copy its Linux commands into Windows. Verify Windows address, gateway, DNS, and internet connectivity using instructions appropriate to the Windows version you installed. Hetzner also notes that temporary route commands disappear after restart unless made persistent, another reason to use Windows-specific configuration guidance.

Prepare YouTube Live and connect an encoder
Check channel eligibility and create the event
- Confirm the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions during the prior 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the time you intend to broadcast.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the stream/event you intend to use.
- In the event’s encoder settings, copy the server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video to a digital format for streaming.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password. If it is compromised, YouTube says you can reset it in Live Control Room; update the encoder with the replacement key afterward.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover eligibility, activation, Live Control Room, encoder connection, key handling, and its archive statement.
Install and configure the encoder without guessing at settings
YouTube lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge. The documentation cited here does not verify a current OBS Windows version, exact Windows installation steps, recommended OBS settings for your specific source, unattended startup configuration, or crash-recovery behavior. Install the encoder from its official current source and use its current documentation for the version you install; do not treat an unverified preset as a reliable 24/7 configuration.

Size bandwidth, test the event, and monitor it
YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. For a primary and backup encoder, YouTube’s guidance is to allow for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate plus 20%. Treat this as bandwidth-planning guidance—not as a guarantee that a given Hetzner server plan, region, or network path will remain stable.
- Calculate the upload capacity needed from the total bitrate you plan to send, leaving the headroom YouTube recommends. If using primary and backup encoders, include both bitrates before adding that margin.
- Start a test broadcast and inspect the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the stream is accessible on its watch page and on a mobile device, and check both audio and video quality.
- Keep a way to observe the event after launch. Check that the encoder is sending, the Live Control Room preview remains healthy, and the watch experience is as expected.
- If you configure primary and backup encoders, test failover before relying on it. YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet and confirming that the player moves to the backup.
- Schedule Windows and encoder updates deliberately. Test after changes rather than assuming the encoder will restart or reconnect unattended.
These checks follow YouTube’s streaming tips. They help expose problems before or during a broadcast but do not certify uninterrupted service.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
- You cannot select or start a YouTube Live event: check channel verification and whether the channel has had live-streaming restrictions during the prior 90 days. For first-time activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- The server has no internet connection after a manual ISO install: check Windows network configuration, including its address, gateway, and DNS, using Windows-specific instructions. Hetzner warns that DHCP can fail to configure networking as expected after a manual ISO install.
- You cannot connect remotely: check the chosen administration route and both Cloud Firewall and Windows Firewall rules. Hetzner Cloud Firewall blocks unspecified inbound traffic by default when no rules are defined; do not solve an access problem by opening unnecessary inbound traffic.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder stream: check that the encoder has the correct Live Control Room server URL and current stream key, and that the selected event is the one you intend to stream. If you reset a compromised key, replace the old key in the encoder.
- The stream is unstable despite a running server: compare the total encoder bitrate with available upload capacity and include YouTube’s recommended headroom. A running VM alone does not establish that the network path or encoder is healthy.
- The stream stops after an update or restart: inspect Windows, the encoder, and the event state directly. The available guidance does not establish unattended OBS startup or crash recovery on Windows, so verify the behavior of your installed versions rather than assuming automatic recovery.
Choose between a Windows server and a cloud playback service
These options solve different problems. A Windows server gives you a machine on which to operate your own encoder; a cloud playback service can be a better fit when the goal is to loop uploaded prerecorded videos without keeping a home computer running.
