Connect the modem’s Ethernet port to the TP-Link router’s WAN or Internet port, then complete the router’s setup wizard in the Tether app or a browser. Before starting, confirm with your ISP whether your connection uses Dynamic IP, PPPoE, Static IP, or a required VLAN ID; the right choice depends on your service, not the router’s Wi-Fi 6 label.
Before you connect the router
Have an Ethernet cable ready and check the setup label on your TP-Link router for its default Wi-Fi name and password. Ask your ISP for the Internet connection type and whether it requires a VLAN ID. TP-Link’s setup guides explain the common distinctions in their new-interface setup guide and classic setup guide; ISP-specific values must come from your provider.

- Dynamic IP: Common for cable service and generally does not require an ISP login.
- PPPoE: Requires the username and password supplied by your ISP.
- Static IP: Uses fixed connection details supplied by your ISP.
- VLAN ID: Enter one only if your ISP requires it, using the value it provides.
Do not guess at connection settings or change unrelated options. TP-Link’s screens differ between its newer and classic interfaces, and port layouts vary by model; follow the labels and prompts for your particular router. The Archer AX55 is one example used in TP-Link’s classic guide, not a requirement for this process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConnect the modem to the router
- Turn off and unplug the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove it as directed in TP-Link’s classic setup procedure.
- Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the modem’s Ethernet port and the other to the TP-Link router’s WAN or Internet port. Use the port labeled for Internet on your model; some newer hardware may offer more than one Internet port.
- Power the modem back on and wait about two minutes for it to restart, as TP-Link recommends in its classic setup guide.
- Turn on the TP-Link router and wait for it to start.
Choose Tether or browser setup
You can configure the router locally before it has Internet access. Choose either the Tether app or a web browser; TP-Link provides separate instructions for its new interface, classic browser interface, and classic Tether setup. The exact screens vary by model and firmware.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Set up in the Tether app
- Connect your phone to the router’s default Wi-Fi network. Find the network name and password on the product label.
- Open TP-Link Tether and select the router when it appears.
- Create or enter the router’s local login password, then follow the app’s prompts.
Set up in a browser
- Connect a phone or computer to the TP-Link router’s Wi-Fi or a LAN port.
- Open a browser and enter
tplinkwifi.netor192.168.0.1in the address bar. - Create or enter the router’s local login password and proceed through the setup wizard.
Configure the Internet connection and Wi-Fi
Set the Internet connection type
Let the wizard detect your connection type, then compare its selection with the information from your ISP. Correct it if needed. Enter the ISP-provided username and password if the service uses PPPoE. If your ISP requires a VLAN ID, enter that value in the wizard’s IPTV/VLAN or Special ISP Settings area; the label differs by interface. TP-Link’s new-interface guide says, “If your ISP doesn’t require a VLAN ID, click Next.”
Name and secure your Wi-Fi network
Choose a network name (SSID) and password in the wizard. On supported models, Smart Connect can use one name for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Other routers may show more bands or let you configure them separately, so use the options available on your model rather than expecting identical screens.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Review and finish
Check the setup summary, then finish or apply the settings. Reconnect your devices to the Wi-Fi name and password you chose. If the router reports that setup is complete but there is no Internet, use the checks below.

Start with the cable and modem
- Confirm the Ethernet cable runs from the modem’s Ethernet port to the router’s WAN/Internet port.
- Check the router’s status page for its Internet IP address. If it shows
0.0.0.0, TP-Link says the router has not received a valid address from the modem. - Connect a computer directly to the modem and test whether the modem has Internet service. Restart the modem if needed; if it still has no service, contact your ISP.
Recheck ISP settings
If the modem works directly, verify the connection type with your ISP and check any required PPPoE credentials or VLAN ID in the router’s settings. Do not substitute guessed values.

Consider less common causes only after the basics
TP-Link documents additional troubleshooting for cases where basic connection and ISP settings are correct. Some ISPs bind service to a device’s MAC address, in which case MAC cloning may be relevant. A conflict between the modem’s and router’s LAN IP ranges may call for changing the router’s LAN address. TP-Link also documents a restart procedure in its Internet troubleshooting guide. These are troubleshooting options, not routine setup steps; use the instructions for your model and contact your ISP if the service itself is unavailable.

If the existing device is a modem/router combo, or another router sits between the modem and TP-Link, the TP-Link router may create Double NAT. TP-Link notes this can affect gaming, VPNs, or remote access. Decide which device should route the home network: depending on that arrangement, you can remove the upstream router or set the TP-Link router to Access Point mode. The right choice depends on your network setup.
