How to Set Up a Website Screenshot MCP Server on an Indian VPS

A practical guide to running Playwright MCP on an Indian VPS, from Node.js and headless setup to HTTP transport, firewall controls, validation, and troubleshooting.

For a self-hosted website screenshot MCP server on an Indian VPS, use the official Playwright MCP package: install Node.js 20 or newer, run it headlessly, and either launch it from your MCP client or expose its standalone HTTP transport at /mcp. Choose the VPS region and firewall deliberately. Playwright MCP can capture screenshots, but it is not a security boundary; do not expose an unrestricted browser endpoint to the public internet.

Choose how your MCP client will connect

There are two documented arrangements. In the simplest, your MCP client starts Playwright MCP as a local child process using the package configuration. This works when the client itself runs on the VPS or can otherwise launch the process in the required environment. For a separately hosted server, start Playwright MCP with HTTP transport and configure the client to connect to its /mcp endpoint.

Approach Best fit Connection detail
Client-launched package The MCP client runs on the VPS and can start the Node.js process. Client starts @playwright/mcp@latest through its mcpServers configuration.
Standalone HTTP server The client runs elsewhere and needs to connect to a process on the VPS. Server listens on a chosen port; client connects to the MCP endpoint, such as http://localhost:8931/mcp when client and server share a host.

Playwright MCP’s primary browser interaction model also uses structured accessibility snapshots. Screenshots are supported for the current page or an element; an agent does not have to rely on images for every interaction. See the Playwright MCP getting-started guide and project documentation.

Select an Indian VPS

Pick the region based on where the MCP client and target websites are, as well as any data-residency needs. India is a hosting location choice, not a special Playwright mode. Compare the actual region, vCPU, RAM, storage, transfer allowance, public IP availability, firewall controls, and current price before you provision.

  • Do not assume a particular low-cost bundle is sufficient: the reviewed setup and hosting documentation does not specify a minimum CPU or memory for screenshot workloads.
  • Account for browser startup, page complexity, screenshot frequency, and simultaneous jobs. Benchmark the target sites and concurrency you intend to run before treating a bundle as adequate.
  • If considering Amazon Lightsail, its documentation lists Mumbai among its regions and states that Mumbai bundles include half the data-transfer allowance shown for bundles. Confirm live plan terms and prices on the Lightsail pricing page and bundle details before choosing; provider prices and allowances can change.

Prepare the Linux server

  1. Provision the VPS. Choose an India-region Linux image and record its public address, SSH access method, and firewall controls.
  2. Connect by SSH and install Node.js 20 or newer. Verify the installed version with node --version. The Playwright package workflow requires Node.js 20+; use the current installation instructions for your Linux distribution rather than an unverified, distribution-specific install command. See Playwright MCP installation.
  3. Plan browser installation and runtime access. The browser downloads automatically on first use in the documented package workflow. Ensure the process can make the necessary outbound connections and write to the locations it needs; a restrictive network policy or filesystem can prevent first launch.
  4. Keep administration restricted. Permit SSH only from the IP addresses or network that need it where your provider allows. Do not open extra inbound ports merely because an example uses them.

Option A: launch Playwright MCP from the client

Use this if the MCP client runs on the VPS and supports a mcpServers configuration. Add the server entry in the client’s own configuration file; the exact file location and restart procedure vary by client. This JSON entry follows the official package-launch pattern:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "playwright": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest", "--headless"]
    }
  }
}

The docs show the package launched through the client configuration and describe headed mode as the default. The --headless flag is appropriate for an unattended VPS without a visible browser window. When the client starts successfully, it should discover the Playwright MCP tools, including screenshot capture. Consult the client configuration examples for your specific MCP client.

Option B: run a standalone HTTP server

For a client on another machine, the official example starts a standalone process on port 8931 and uses the /mcp route. Start with a loopback-only binding when the client is on the same VPS:

Configure a local MCP client with the documented endpoint:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "playwright": {
      "url": "http://localhost:8931/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The separate-process example and endpoint are documented in the Playwright MCP guide. For a remote client, do not simply publish the service on every interface and open its port to the world. Configure the server’s --host and --allowed-hosts options intentionally, and use network controls such as a firewall or a private network path to restrict who can reach it. The configuration options are described at Playwright MCP configuration.

Restrict network access and secrets

A browser controlled by an MCP client can navigate to sites and interact with pages. Treat the endpoint and the browser process as sensitive. Playwright’s project warns that the MCP server is not a security boundary. Its configuration documentation also says of the secrets feature, “This is a convenience, not a security boundary.” Secret redaction is not a substitute for endpoint access controls.

  • Bind only to the interface required by your topology; a loopback binding is preferable when the MCP client shares the VPS.
  • Use the provider firewall to allow only the required inbound traffic. A Lightsail firewall controls which protocols and ports can reach an instance; AWS’s examples for base OS images include SSH on TCP 22 and HTTP on TCP 80, but those are provider examples, not universal defaults. See AWS Lightsail firewall guidance.
  • Before using --allowed-hosts, decide which hostnames should be accepted and configure them narrowly. Avoid broad exposure or permissive host settings unless you have a deliberate, protected deployment design.
  • Do not put credentials in an endpoint configuration that is publicly readable, or assume the MCP server itself isolates an untrusted client.

For deployment with containers, the Playwright MCP repository includes a Docker example; use its current instructions and apply the same network and access-control caution: Playwright MCP repository.

Validate the setup from the intended client

  1. Start the MCP process using the selected launch method and check its logs for startup or browser-download errors.
  2. Connect from the actual MCP client and confirm it lists Playwright tools. A successful process launch alone does not prove the client is connected to the right transport or endpoint.
  3. Ask the client to navigate to a non-sensitive page and take a screenshot of the page, or a page element. Confirm the returned image is usable and that the requested page loaded.
  4. For HTTP transport, verify the client URL uses the correct address, port, and /mcp path. Test from the client machine, not only from the VPS shell.
  5. Review firewall rules and host restrictions after validation; remove temporary access rules that are no longer needed.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Package will not start or reports an unsupported runtime Node.js is older than the documented prerequisite, or the client cannot find the intended Node/npm executable. Run node --version in the relevant environment and confirm it is 20 or newer; verify the MCP client launches with the same environment.
First screenshot hangs or browser executable is missing The browser has not downloaded, outbound access is blocked, or the process cannot write required files. Inspect startup logs, allow required outbound access, and check the service user’s filesystem permissions. The documented package workflow downloads the browser automatically on first use.
Client cannot connect to standalone server Wrong host, port, route, process state, or firewall rule. Confirm the process is running with the selected port, use the exact /mcp endpoint, and test reachability from the client’s network. If bound to loopback, a remote client cannot reach it directly.
Connection works locally but not remotely The server is bound only to localhost or network policy blocks the port. Review --host, --allowed-hosts, provider firewall, and any host firewall. Expose only the access path required; do not solve connectivity by indiscriminately opening the service.
Screenshot is blank, incomplete, or inconsistent The target page may not have finished rendering, may require interaction, or may behave differently in a headless browser. Use the MCP interaction tools to inspect the page state and wait for the relevant content before capturing; verify the target page itself loads from the VPS.
VPS slows down or jobs fail under load Browser work, page complexity, and concurrency may exceed the resources available. Reduce simultaneous captures and measure the workload on the selected VPS before increasing concurrency or changing bundle size. No documented minimum size establishes capacity for a given site or load.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is simply to get a website screenshot through an MCP-capable workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a hosted screenshot API and MCP server. Its API accepts one GET request with a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For a basic API call, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
