The best live-stream settings are the highest resolution and frame rate your platform, upload connection, and computer can sustain together—not necessarily the highest settings your game can run. Choose the platform’s current bitrate guidance for your codec, leave headroom for the encoder, and test a representative stretch of gameplay before you go live.
Choose settings for the stream, not just the game
Game FPS and stream FPS are separate. Your game can render at a high frame rate while your stream sends 30 or 60 frames per second. A 60-fps stream can make fast gameplay look smoother, but higher output FPS and resolution demand more bandwidth and encoding capacity.

There is no universal best preset: fast camera movement, foliage, and other detailed motion are harder to encode than a static menu. OBS puts it plainly: “There is no such thing as ‘best settings’.” Start with your platform’s ingest guidance, then test the actual game and hardware you plan to use.

Use YouTube’s current ingest recommendations
The following are YouTube’s published recommended bitrates, reviewed October 3, 2026. They are recommendations, not hard minimums or a guarantee of quality. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingestion, frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), and recommends RTMPS. YouTube transcodes live streams into viewing formats for different devices and networks. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

| Output | AV1 / H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
These figures apply to YouTube and the listed codec and output combination; do not transfer them to Twitch or another service. YouTube recommends testing upload speed, so compare your stable upload capacity with the selected stream bitrate and leave room for normal network variation and other household or office traffic. If you cannot sustain the recommended rate reliably, choose a lower output resolution or frame rate rather than pushing an unstable stream.
Set a practical resolution and FPS
Start with the platform and available upload
- Confirm the platform, encoder, and codec you will use. Copy that platform’s current ingest guidance rather than relying on a bitrate chart intended for another service.
- Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to your stream. Select a resolution/FPS recommendation that your connection can sustain with margin.
- Choose the stream output FPS independently of the game’s render rate. Use 60 fps when the platform, bitrate, and system can support it; otherwise, 30 fps is a reasonable lower-demand starting point.
- Set the stream output resolution to the level you can encode cleanly and deliver consistently. A lower, stable output is preferable to intermittent dropped or distorted frames.
Keep bitrate, codec, and keyframes aligned
For YouTube, use its recommended CBR mode and 2-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed a 4-second interval. Match the bitrate to the resolution, FPS, and codec in YouTube’s table. The H.264 recommendation is higher than the AV1/H.265 recommendation at the same listed output; do not assume the same bitrate applies across codecs.
OBS’s older x264 guidance gives 5,000–8,000 kbps as an example for 1920×1080 at 30 fps under low-to-medium motion, and notes that high-motion 1080p60 can require more than 8,000 kbps in its example conditions. Treat that as an OBS example, not a current universal platform limit; for YouTube, use the current platform table above.

Choose game graphics that leave encoding headroom
Graphics quality is a resource tradeoff, not a stream setting. The goal is the best-looking playable game that leaves enough GPU and CPU capacity for capture and encoding. If an uncapped game consumes nearly all available GPU time, a high game FPS number can come at the cost of a lagging or uneven stream.
- Cap in-game FPS near a sustainable rate if the game is monopolizing the GPU. Test whether that restores smooth capture before changing other settings.
- Lower demanding game graphics options or game resolution if the GPU remains saturated.
- Try borderless windowed mode if capture or GPU contention is a problem.
- Change one setting at a time, then retest, so you can identify what improved or worsened performance.
NVIDIA’s guide says that, on Windows, GPU utilization above 95% can cause the system to prioritize the game and the stream to lag; it lists capping game FPS, lowering graphics or resolution, or enabling V-Sync as possible remedies. This is NVIDIA guidance, not a universal threshold for every system. NVIDIA’s broadcasting guide.
Select an encoder suited to your hardware
A supported hardware encoder can reduce reliance on CPU encoding resources. NVIDIA describes NVENC as a dedicated physical section of the GPU; OBS’s general explainer also names NVENC, Quick Sync, and AMD VCE as dedicated hardware encoders. Encoder availability and best choice depend on your hardware, software version, platform, and codec.

NVIDIA’s guide recommends H.264 NVENC for Twitch, AV1 NVENC for YouTube on RTX 40-series GPUs, and HEVC NVENC for YouTube on other NVIDIA setups covered by that guide. These are NVIDIA-specific recommendations; do not generalize them to AMD or Intel hardware, other GPU generations, or different software versions. OBS’s older x264 article explains general principles but is not a present-day head-to-head encoder benchmark.
Test the stream and watch for overload
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using the same platform, encoder, output settings, audio, and game you intend to use.
- Include gameplay with camera movement, effects, and other fast or detailed motion—not only a static menu. Check audio as well as picture.
- Watch the platform’s stream-health indicators during the test and look for skipped frames, distortion, or unstable delivery.
- If OBS reports “Encoding overloaded!” or the picture skips, lower stream output resolution or FPS. If you use CPU-based x264 encoding, consider a faster x264 preset if lowering output does not resolve the issue.
- If the game is saturating the GPU, cap its FPS or reduce game graphics/resolution. Retest after each change.
YouTube Help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Monitor stream health during the actual broadcast too. YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

Do not use YouTube’s bitrate recommendations as Twitch limits. Twitch’s guidance emphasizes balancing encoding, bitrate, resolution, and framerate with the game, upload speed, and computer hardware, and says CBR is preferable when possible. Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting has been described as client-side multiple encodes with automatic configuration, but its current availability and exact limits should be checked in Twitch’s live guidance before relying on them.
